(336) 200-4949 or FaceBook Cone Exhibits at BRAHM Through November 30, Blowing Rock Art and History Museum Two special exhibitions will tell stories about the Cone family. For the first time ever, the renowned art collection of sisters Claribel and Etta Cone will be presented with historical context with their lives in North Carolina. Modern Visions, Modern Art: The Cone Sisters in North Carolina presents a selection from the Cone Collection with artwork by Henri Matisse, Rembrandt, Sarah Stein, Jacques Villon, and others. Modern Visions, Mountain Views: The Cones of Flat Top Manor tells the story of NC's "Denim King," Moses H. Cone, and his wife, Bertha. Find details at goplayhouse.org TAC TALK: MOONSHINE TALES & TASTING Thursday, November 14th from 6-7:00 pm, Blowing Rock Art and History Museum Moonshine is as Appalachian as cornbread and soup beans. It was an economic driver in the area for generations, but since making your own liquor wasn’t exactly “legal” the moonshiners were constantly on the run and trying to be one step ahead of the law. The illicit nature of the drink did not dismay fans of the white lightning and now in the 21st-century legal “craft” moonshine is hitting the market. Join speaker Willard Watson for this program, which will be a mix of lecture and legal moonshine sampling for those over 21. We will ask the questions: What is the appeal of the clear spirit? And if it is legal and mass-produced is it still moonshine? TAC talks are free for members and $5 for non-members. “THE GOOD DOCTOR” AT LEES-MCRAE Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 14–16, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. in Hayes Auditorium and Broyhill Theatre on the campus of Lees-McRae. Tickets may be purchased online or at the door one hour prior to showtime. All seating is general admission. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for students. The Good Doctor, authored by Neil Simon, was a hit when it debuted on Broadway in 1973 and has continued to delight and captivate audiences through the years. The play consists of 10 short scenes adapted from and inspired by the short stories of 19th-century Russian author and playwright Anton Chekhov. For the eighth consecutive year, the Appalachian Musical Theatre Ensemble at Appalachian State University is producing an all-student run musical with the international smash hit Mama Mia! This jukebox musical is based on the award-winning catalog of songs by the Swedish pop music group ABBA, one of the most popular international groups of all time. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults and may be purchased online at appmusicaltheatre.com, in person in the Plemmons Student Union the week of the show and, if available, at the door one-half hour prior to each performance. Dr. The Cleverlys are a one-of-a-kind comedy/music blend coming from the remote part of the Ozark Mountains, near Cane Spur, Arkansas. Digger Cleverly, along with his nephews Ricky Lloyd, Sock, DVD and Cub, make up The Cleverlys. They have traveled the globe, if the globe only consisted of the United States, performing at music venues and some of the nation’s largest festivals like Stagecoach, Telluride, CMA Music Fest and even the Grand Ole Opry. The Cleverlys’ set list includes genius arrangements of tunes like Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” a medley of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity,” and Flo Rida’s “Low” that recently went viral on Facebook, with over 11 million views from a local TV appearance https://hearnowentertainment.ticketspice.com/the-cleverlys-at-harvest-house-performing-arts-venue OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW Sunday, November 17, 7pm, Schaefer Center, ASU, $25/$20/$15, www.schaefercenter.org, 828-262-4046 Old Crow Medicine Show started busking on street corners in 1998 in New York state and up through Canada, winning audiences along the way with their boundless energy and spirit. They eventually found themselves in Boone, NC, where they caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson while playing in front of a pharmacy. He invited the band to play at his festival, MerleFest, helping to launch their career. Shortly thereafter the band was hired to entertain crowds between shows at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. It’s been over 20 years since these humble beginnings. The band has gone on to receive the honor of being inducted as members of the Grand Ole Opry, and have won two Grammy Awards: Best Folk Album for Remedy (2014) and Best Long Form Music Video for Big Easy Express (2013). Additionally, their classic single, “Wagon Wheel”, received the RIAA’s Platinum certification in 2013 for selling over 1,000,000 copies. FALL APPALACHIAN DANCE ENSEMBLE (FADE) Wednesday, November 20 through Saturday, November 23, at 7pm, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, November 24, Valborg Theatre, ASU. This dance showcases features eight pieces that are having their world premiere performances this month. All shows are general admission and ticket prices are $17 for adults, $15 for faculty and staff, and $10 for students.

With songs like Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable,” LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” Justin Bieber’s “Baby” and The Zombies’ “She’s Not (Ain’t) There,” this music would be at the edge of being full camp if it weren't for the obvious vocal talent and stellar picking that holds up to any of today’s progressive acoustic bands. “If Earl Scruggs, Dolly Parton, and Spinal Tap spawned a litter of puppies, it would be The Cleverlys.” — The New York Times. The group brings the comedy it's been hailed for in national touring to this new recording, the first on the award-winning Bluegrass label, Mountain Home Music Company. The 5-piece includes vocalist and guitarist Dr. Digger Cleverly, the band patriarch who often refers to the outfit as the Cleverly Trio; Ricky Lloyd Cleverly on bass and vocals; DVD Cleverly on banjo and vocals; Cub Cleverly on mandolin and vocals; and Sock Cleverly on fiddle and vocals. Digger says, “I believe young folks, older folks, thicket thugs, librarians, college students, truck drivers, spam eaters, crop dusters, county fairs to livermush festivals, eyelash studios to tattoo parlors, mail carriers to body wax unions, Champaign to Pabst Blue Ribbon, will get something out of this project.” The lead-off track “Baby” is a cover of the Justin Bieber hit, but with The Cleverlys’ Bluegrass treatment, it sounds like Flatt and Scruggs could’ve written and recorded it.
