You can use it in your planning and program administration. Additional detail for each phase is provided in the remainder of this guide. PHASE 1: PLANNING PRAY your way through all planning and put your trust in the Holy Spirit. As St. Paul tells us, “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:16-17). A few months ahead, the Program Coordinator should meet with the Pastor or group director to secure approval and to plan the dates of the program. Identify and reserve the place where the program will be held. This room should include: • DVD player and a monitor with a large enough screen to be viewed by the whole class. If you are streaming the video talks, you will need reliable inter- net connection as well. If you have a large group, it is often helpful to have the screen raised for easier viewing • Chairs to accommodate all participants • Break-out rooms or secluded areas for small-group discussion— a separate space for each group • Tables around which participants may gather for discussion. This is often helpful so that the group may spread out materials. Recruit other members of the Leadership Team, including the Program Administrator and Group Discussion Leaders. You should have one Group Leader for every 8-10 people. Order the Study Program Leader’s Kit as early as possible, so the Program Coordinator can review the materials and begin to plan the Leader’s Orientation session. Determine if the cost of the program materials will be passed through to the participants. Don’t forget to include shipping, handling, applicable tax, and any other expenses your program will incur in the total cost to be allocated and assigned as a registration fee. Publicize The Mass program with free, downloadable posters and flyers found at mass.wordonfire.org/#support-materials THE MASS: Facilitator Guide 3 Place an announcement in the Sunday bulletin that includes a registration form (also available at mass.wordonfire.org/#support-materials). Ask for the registration form and fee to be submit- ted at least three weeks ahead of the start of the program so that you can order the right number of study guides for your group. You can order a few extra and return them within 90 days for a full refund if they have not been used. Plan at least one Sunday where the program can be announced from the pulpit. Set up a registration table in the vestibule staffed by the Leadership Team and complete with registration forms and a sample study guide. If possible, play The Mass trailer or video on a laptop, so parishioners can experience the visual impact of the study. Right before the Leaders’ Orientation Session, the Program Administrator should compile a roster of all those registered that includes contact information. Assign each participant on the roster to a Group Discussion Leader (to be announced at Leaders’ Orientation). Try to balance age, gender, and adult formation experience so each group has a mix. If you know many of the registrants, try to balance the “talkers” with the “listeners.” Also, separate spouses or groups of friends so each participant comes to the discussion as an individual. Hold the Group Leaders’ Orientation Session one to two weeks ahead of the start of the program. See details in the Leadership Preparation section on page 9. PHASE 2: HOSTING THE PROGRAM PRAY your way through the presentation of the program and put your trust in the Holy Spirit. As St. Paul tells us, “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:16-17). First session: Welcome and Orientation. Create an atmosphere where people can comfortably get oriented to the program and get to know their small groups. Begin Leadership Prep Meetings before the second session. Meet to pray, discuss leaders’ own responses to the lesson questions, and to cover any administrative issues. Make sure there is a way for participants to ask questions that still might remain after the group discussion. If you have a priest available, questions can be directed to him. Encourage the Group Leaders to contact EACH of their group members regularly outside of the program session. Group Leaders can call, email, or connect with people in person. This contact is important to build fellowship among the small groups, to uncover any concerns, and to promote trust and openness. Remember, evangelization starts with a loving relationship. 4 ©2018 Word on Fire Catholic Ministries FACILITATOR GUIDE FACILITATOR PHASE 3: EVALUATION AND NEXT STEPS PRAY your way through the evaluation and put your trust in the Holy Spirit. Revise and/or hand out the survey (at mass.wordonfire.org/#support-materials) before the program ends. Encourage all participants and leaders to complete the survey, so you can continu- ally improve your Adult Formation programming. Share any comments or suggestions with Word on Fire by emailing: [email protected] Discuss options for your next Adult Formation Program.Word on Fire offers other study programs based on Bishop Barron’s video presentations (www.wordonfire.org/study-programs/). THE MASS: Facilitator Guide 5 • STUDY PROGRAM MATERIALS 1. Everyone will need to have The Mass Study Guide or Leader's Guide, a Catholic Bible, and access to the Catechism of the Catholic Church to complete the questions in the workbook. 2. Catholic translations of the Bible are encouraged. These include: • Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition: A more literal translation used for serious Scripture study • New American Bible: Used in the liturgy and easier to read • New Jerusalem Bible: More contemporary language, but still true to the original meaning 3. To look up references in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, you can purchase a copy of the Catechism or go to this website and enter the paragraph number to display the text: http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc.htm 4. Each person must have his/her own Study Guide, so everyone can write answers to the questions and take notes individually. Copying lessons without permission is forbidden by copyright laws. 5. It is suggested that you order the Leader’s Guide for each Group Discussion Leader, so they can have ac- cess to the Facilitator’s Guide and Answer Key, and a more in-depth discussion of the content. 6. Every lesson follows the same format: • Video Outline: Follows the video presentation, so it can be useful for note taking. • Commentary on the Video Lesson: The first pages of the lesson that review and add detail to the video lesson. • Questions for Understanding: Answers can be found in the DVD and commentary primarily, with some reference to the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Participants should be encouraged to write down their answers, as research shows that the simple act of writing something down increases retention significantly. Each discussion session should cover all of the Questions for Understanding, so please budget your time accordingly. • Questions for Application: Each discussion should include at least two Questions for Application. Group leaders can assign specific questions the week before, so participants can prepare for those that will be discussed. If some of the questions seem too personal, please encourage your group to think about them and to pray and reflect on them privately. The study program provides many opportunities for enrichment of each person’s spiritual life, whether in a group or individually. • Glossary: Defines theological and other terms used. 6 ©2018 Word on Fire Catholic Ministries FACILITATOR GUIDE FACILITATOR • PROGR AM PLANNING 1. Set up the dates and times for the program according to procedures in your parish or group. Make sure to discuss the program plans with your Pastor or Group Leader. It is helpful to publish a complete calendar for the program that includes each session’s date and what will be covered in that session. 2. Assemble your Leadership Team (see below). 3. Announce the program in the parish or group. Free promotional materials are available at mass.wordonfire.org/#support-materials. These include: flyers, posters, bulletin and pulpit an- nouncements, and registration forms. 4. Strive to have one Sunday set aside where the program can be announced from the pulpit at all Masses and parishioners can register as they exit the church.
