DIRECTOR: EDUARDO BLÁZQUEZ MATEOS 3 La doctoranda Inés Hellín Rubio ha cumplido y ha realizado con rigor científico la tesis doctoral, cuenta con el visto bueno del director de la tesis, al cumplir con los requisitos necesarios para poder defender la innovadora tesis doctoral sobre dos ballets narrativos, definiendo el cuerpo de una metodología de estudio de los ballets dramáticos. Las obras analizadas se enmarcan en la Historia del Espectáculo, desde un enfoque integrador, uniendo las artes se amplía la visión de la danza. El sentido didáctico y moralizante de las Artes, tiene en el marco devocional un Santuario convertido en Laboratorio de interpretación creativa. La tesis doctoral es un reflejo de la relación existente entre el texto y la escena, los ballets narrativos reflejan la idea de arte total, centrada y enriquecida en el método de transducción literaria del texto al lenguaje plástico-artístico de Danza Española. Desde Tespis, uno de los padres del Teatro, a la tríada del teatro clásico, Sófocles, Esquilo y Eurípides, la elección de un tema como Medea, que remite a la historia del Vellocino de Oro, se explica desde la fusión y la relación entre las artes, desde la integración de teatro y danza; los apoyos se conforman desde la unión de la pintura y la poesía, para ir plasmando un itinerario estudiado y analizado con minuciosidad por parte de la doctoranda. -

While Wolf’s attitude towards religion was ambiguous, his settings of the “Geistliche Lieder” from both collections are remarkable examples of originality, artistry, and personal expression. The study traces Wolf’s motivation for working with religious-themed verses from two divergent poetic sources in the context of biographical circumstances and examines Wolf’s distinctive musical articulation in selected sacred songs from two representative works: the Mörike volume which initiated the mature period of the composer’s career and artistry, and the Spanisches Liederbuch, which represents his originality in full bloom. -

In Germany and occupied Austria, people with disabilities were the first to fall victim to National Socialist mass murder, propa- IHRA gated under the euphemistic term of “euthanasia”. For racist and economic reasons they were deemed unfit to live. The means and methods used in these crimes were applied later during the Holocaust— perpetrators of these first murders became experts in the death camps of the so-called “Aktion Reinhardt”. International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (Ed.) Over the course of World War II the National Socialists aimed to exterminate people with disabilities in the occupied territories of Mass Murder of People with Western Europe, and also in Eastern Europe. This publication presents the results of the latest research on Disabilities and the Holocaust these murders in the German occupied territories, as discussed at an IHRA conference held in Bern in November 2017. Highben • Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities Muskingum University [email protected] 8 CHORAL JOURNAL Volume 56 Number 1 Jean Berger (1909-2002) was a leading fi gure in American choral music in the latter half of the twentieth century. Both as a musician and person, Berger seemed to personify cosmopolitanism. His name was French, his music was infl uenced by the South American sounds he encountered during a year in Brazil, and within his adopted homeland he was both a successful composer and a highly regarded teacher and lecturer on the choral art. Few people are aware, however, of the details of Berger’s origins: • he was born into an orthodox Jewish family in Germany, under a diff erent name, and was later persecuted by the Nazis. Yet that narrative had a dramatic impact on the course of Berger’s life and the eclectic character of his music. This article examines Berger’s evolution as a choral composer, particularly the eff ect of the Nazis’ rise to power and World War II on his life and work. Two war-era compositions, In a Time of Pestilence and Vision of Peace, will be analyzed in detail as exemplar of the connection between Berger’s biography and compositional syntax.
