Faut-il?’ by Jean-Philippe Rameau 245 Acknowledgements 248 Samenvatting 249 Curriculum vitae 251 5 Introduction 6 The research topic and the questions investigated The title of this dissertation (‘The Relationship between Gesture, Affect, and Rhythmic Freedom in the Performance of French Tragic Opera from Lully to Rameau’), is indicative of the genre to which my research has been applied, the tragédie en musique. My intent, in looking at this repertoire, has been to examine how expressive modifications of the basic rhythmic pulse could have been related to the use of gesture on stage and to the theory of the affects that was prevalent in the medical philosophy of the time. My topic has not sprung, Athena-like, from a researcher’s maggoty brain: in fact, there are a number of sources from the 18th century that indicate that the affective acting style en vogue at the Opéra exerted no small degree of influence on the flow of the musical beat. Jean-Jacques Rousseau, for instance, in a rare kindly mood towards French music, wrote in his Dictionnaire de musique (1768): C’est peu de lire la Musique exactement sur la Note; il faut entrer dans toutes les idées du Composteur, sentir & rendre le feu de l’expression, avoir surtout l’oreille juste & toujours attentive pour écouter & suivre l’Ensemble. Il faut, en particulier dans la Musique Françoise, que la Partie principale sache presser ou ralentir le mouvement, selon que l’exigent le goût du Chant, le volume de Voix & le développement des bras du Chanteur; il faut, par conséquent, que toutes les autres Parties soient sans relâche, attentives à bien suivre celle-là.

Most current gesture-based approaches to video game interaction neglect the use of the fingers for interaction, but inclusion of the fingers will allow for more natural and unique interaction and merits further research. To implement arm, hand and finger-based interaction for the video game domain, several problems must be solved including gesture recognition, segmentation, hand visualization, and video game interaction that responds to arm, hand, and finger input. Solutions to each of these problems have been implemented. The potential of this interaction style is illustrated through the introduction of an arm, hand, and finger controlled video game system that responds to players' hand gestures.

Este fue el inicio de una nueva era socio-cultural: en música, esto provocó una evolución en la ambición y el formato. Aunque las formas a gran escala, sobre todo la Tragedia – lírica, continuaron siendo los modelos más avanzados para el entretenimiento de la corte, un arte más confidencial se desarrollaba, favoreciendo formas más modestas, como la sonata. En el ámbito de la música vocal, el air de cour se había vuelto muy popular desde el siglo XVI, y se le unió, a principios del XVIII, un nuevo género: La cantate. Esta forma se extendió a través de los círculos musicales franceses, coexistiendo con la más Antigua y muy en boga: cantata Italiana. La cantate francesa se distinguía de su prima italiana por su estilo, heredado de la tragédie lyrique, y en particular por la atención puesta en el texto. Estas obras eran la quintaesencia de “el buen gusto francés”, combinando los delicados ritmos de elocuencia poética con graciosas melodías. Estas arias à la française eran cantadas por uno o dos cantantes, acompañados de un clave, al que se le podían unir varios instrumentos: flauta, violín, viola, por ejemplo.
