Inside Access: Nike's Link to New York City's Hoops Heritage Nike Inside Access: Nike’s Link to New York City’s Hoops Heritage Nike Basketball prepares for All-Star in New York with a look at the past’s impact on the future. The last time All-Star landed in New York City, the year was 1998 and the city was abuzz – basketball was on center stage globally as performance and culture fused together in one of the sport’s most iconic cities. That year, more than half of the All-Star players sported Nike footwear, turning heads among athletes, fans and trendsetters. The shoe styles ranged from the Nike Total Air Foamposite Max and the Nike Air Garnett to the Nike Air Zoom Flight (The Glove) — shoes that transcended the court as basketball culture ascended, globally. At the time, Zoom Air emerged as the go-to technology shaping the game. From Jason Kidd’s backcourt speed to David Robinson’s frontcourt command, Nike was well represented on the court. The pro game faced an intersection as some of the sport’s icons prepared to pass the baton to the next generation of superstars. Meanwhile, international stars patiently awaited their shot at cracking a traditionally American sport. Monumental moments in Nike Basketball’s 43-year history have taken shape in New York City, where innovation, inspiration, credibility and stardom all collide. 1972: Nike’s Birth in NYC Basketball’s founding father James Naismith hailed from Canada but gave birth to the sport in Massachusetts in the 1890s. Yet some argue that the game’s formative years took shape on New York’s legendary outdoor courts in the 1970s. At the same time, Nike Basketball was taking flight and the Nike Blazer basketball shoe first hit New York in 1972. The competition was fierce in NYC’s outdoor hoops scene with a rugged, yet poetic, style all its own. From Manhattan’s West 4th Street courts up to Harlem’s Rucker Park to Brooklyn’s Soul in the Hole court, basketball became intertwined with the culture of New York City’s five boroughs. 1982: Air Force 1 Is Born Just a decade old, Nike took New York by storm in 1982 with its Air Force 1 shoe, affectionately called “Uptowns.” The first basketball shoe to feature Nike’s patented Air technology, the Air Force 1 combined premium craftsmanship with an iconic silhouette. Everyone from pro stars playing at Madison Square Garden to streetball legends playing the city’s blacktop coveted the shoe. The Air Force 1’s legacy took shape on NYC’s famed courts. In fact, the shoe was so popular in Harlem, both on and off the court that the nickname “Uptowns” spread quickly. A phenomenon that started locally has gone global and the shoe holds rank as the No. 1 seller in the history of athletic footwear due in part to its early adoption in New York and credibility on the courts. 1992: Air Raid Takes Off Pop culture drove outdoor basketball’s popularity global in the early 1990s thanks to movies, advertising and music. Spawned after a designer trip to New York, the Nike Air Raid shoe legitimized the brand as a top contender for the burgeoning outdoor basketball shoe market. Designed by Tinker Hatfield and Mark Smith, the Air Raid was engineered specifically for the blacktop with its rugged traction, padded upper and iconic “X” strap, which served both function and fashion. 2003: Battlegrounds: King of the Court In 2003, ‘Battlegrounds: King of the Court,’ was a Nike program that brought together America’s top outdoor basketball players in a summer completion that culminated in New York City. Teams from NYC, LA, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Toronto faced off in a one-on-one street ball championship tournament. Regardless of the competition, NYC would argue they’re home to the world’s best outdoor hoops scene. 2010: NYC and Nike Welcome the World There was a basketball first in NYC during Summer 2010. NIKE, Inc. brought the world’s best basketball teams and top musical performers to New York City for the inaugural World Basketball Festival (WBF), a four-day celebration of the performance and culture of the game. WBF was a fitting primer for top national teams heading to Turkey for the 2010 FIBA World Championships. 2015: The Future Is Now Fast-forward to now as the All-Star festivities prepare for a return to the city that never sleeps and the many innovative and inspirational surprises Nike Basketball has in store. Tomorrow Nike Basketball will unveil its 2015 Collection for All-Star with direct inspiration from New York City. .

BASKE TBALL AND PHILOSOPHY The Philosophy of Popular Culture The books published in the Philosophy of Popular Culture series will il- luminate and explore philosophical themes and ideas that occur in popu- lar culture. The goal of this series is to demonstrate how philosophical inquiry has been reinvigorated by increased scholarly interest in the inter- section of popular culture and philosophy, as well as to explore through philosophical analysis beloved modes of entertainment, such as movies, TV shows, and music. Philosophical concepts will be made accessible to the general reader through examples in popular culture. This series seeks to publish both established and emerging scholars who will engage a major area of popular culture for philosophical interpretation and exam- ine the philosophical underpinnings of its themes. Eschewing ephemeral trends of philosophical and cultural theory, authors will establish and elaborate on connections between traditional philosophical ideas from important thinkers and the ever-expanding world of popular culture. VINCE CARTER WINS 2019-20 NBA SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD NEW YORK, Oct. 1, 2020 – NBA players have selected Vince Carter as the recipient of the 2019-20 NBA Sportsmanship Award, the NBA announced today. Carter, who spent the 2019-20 season with the Atlanta Hawks, announced his retirement from the NBA in June after playing a league-record 22 seasons. He receives the Joe Dumars Trophy as the winner of the NBA Sportsmanship Award. Dumars, a two-time NBA champion and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer, played 14 NBA seasons and won the inaugural Sportsmanship Award in the 1995-96 season. Each NBA team nominated one of its players for the NBA Sportsmanship Award, which is designed to honor a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court. • TRIUMPH in the STEEL FORUM Keystones Reach 40 Wins; Earn First Eastern Conference Playoff Bid
TRIUMPH IN THE STEEL FORUM Keystones reach 40 wins; earn first Eastern Conference playoff bid PITTSBURGH - Recalling times of only a year ago, the rough-headed Pittsburgh Keystones definitely did not look like a team of playoff caliber. This was even the case after one quarter of this season had passed by. But, flash back to 2013 - GM Mark Quintaux (horse) and head coach Anton Schumacher (lynx) were dealing with a rather destructive media presence after the send off of Crystal Davis to their biggest opponents, the Williamsburg Minutemen. However, with a casual demeanor and a reassuring smile, the newly-hired manager let us know that, “... everything I’ve done for this team has been with one goal in mind. To take Pittsburgh to the playoffs and beyond. I believe the team we have now has what it takes. The Keystones are a force to be reckoned with, and our opponents ignore us at their own peril.” And now that dream is a reality. With Pittsburgh’s 42nd win on March 19th, the Keystones clinched a playoff berth. Overwhelmingly, and undeniably, they are the best team in their division. Give the props to R andy Catcher and Lance Freewell - two players who are at the top of their game, leading the FBA in assists and 5th in points scored per game, respectively. Throw in the contributions of Terrence Tolliver and rookie Shirley Takamoto, and it’s being considered “the perfect timing” for this franchise. The Keystones will have to face Albany and Plymouth in the playoff ring, but they have the tools needed - and the momentum - to carry this one through and surprise us all..
