FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Jackie Estrada [email protected] Nominees Announced for 2017 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards Sonny Liew’s The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye Tops List with Six Nominations SAN DIEGO – Comic-Con International (Comic-Con) is proud to announce the nominations for the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards 2017. The nominees were chosen by a blue-ribbon panel of judges. Once again, this year’s nominees reflect the wide range of material being published in comics and graphic novel form today, with over 120 titles from some 50 publishers and by creators from all over the world. Topping the nominations is Sonny Liew’s The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye (Pantheon), originally published in Singapore. It is a history of Singapore from the 1950s to the present as told by a fictional cartoonist in a wide variety of styles reflecting the various time periods. It is nominated in 6 categories: Best Graphic Album–New, Best U.S. Edition of International Material–Asia, Best Writer/Artist, Best Coloring, Best Lettering, and Best Publication Design. Boasting 4 nominations are Image’s Saga and Kill or Be Killed. Saga is up for Best Continuing Series, Best Writer (Brian K. Vaughan), and Best Cover Artist and Best Coloring (Fiona Staples). Kill or Be Killed by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips is nominated for Best Continuing Series, Best Writer, Best Cover Artist, and Best Coloring (Elizabeth Breitweiser). Two titles have 3 nominations: Image’s Monstress by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda (Best Publication for Teens, Best Painter, Best Cover Artist) and Tom Gauld’s Mooncop (Best Graphic Album–New, Best Writer/Artist, Best Lettering), published by Drawn & Quarterly. -

From 1983 to 1996, Gilbert produced the now legendary Palomar saga, collected in the graphic novels Heartbreak Soup and Human Diastrophism, and considered to be one of the dening bodies of literature of its era. His latest collection is Luba and Her Family and the stand alone, Julio’s Day. VOLUME 1 SPRING 2012 ISSUE 1 2 THE CARTOON CRIER Bil Keane, 1922–2011 In the late 1990s I was in my thirties trying to make a name for myself as a cartoonist. I fervently wanted to make a comic that could be deemed literature. I believed the future of the medium was the graphic novel and had no time for the contemporary newspaper comic strip. Its format seemed tired and its content formulaic. Then I saw the above Family Circus panel. The elements still give me a chill. A leafless tree is silhouetted in what looks to be the stark lighting of sundown. An old woman, her back to the reader, peers over her shoulder. The setting at first seems intimate, as she is sitting on a bed, yet the wall behind her is impersonal and empty. Her expression is one of weariness and resignation. She is contemplating her death. Whom is she speaking to? Her son? Her husband? An apparition? Little Dolly? This one unpretentious panel had all the mystery and pathos I so wanted to see in my own work. I had a lot to learn from Bil Keane. Bil Keane passed away last year at age 89. He was a great cartoonist. Through his involvement with the National Cartoonists Society, Bil enriched the lives of so many other cartoonists. Essential Graphic Medicine: An Annotated Bibliography Created by Alice Jaggers and Matthew Noe Funded by an American Library Association Carnegie-Whitney Grant Welcome! This is the PDF version of our project, entitled Essential Graphic Medicine: An Annotated Bibliography. This bibliography emerged out of Alice and Matthew's combined experience with collection management work related to graphic medicine, that is, comics about health, and our shared interest in making this field/genre more accessible to library workers new to the concept. Below you will find more detailed information about the project and our approach, some important caveats, and links to each of the 30 annotations. In addition, you can find a web version of this bibliography on the Graphic Medicine website. We hope you find this helpful for your work - be you a library worker or not - and invite your questions or comments! You can reach us using the Contact Graphic Medicine form or find us on Twitter: @AJaggers324 for Alice and @NoetheMatt for Matthew. 1 The Project In late 2017, after answering countless requests for ideas on how to start a graphic medicine collection, we came together to propose an annotated bibliography project that would help library workers do just that: get started with graphic medicine in their library. While the two of us have expertise on this, being mindful of potential for bias, we decided that to do an essential list properly, we would need the input of the graphic medicine community. To that end, we launched a survey in early fall 2018 to coincide with the 2018 Graphic Medicine Conference and distributed it to conference attendees, listservs, and directly to those within the community we might otherwise miss. -

Los Angeles Times, July 22, 2017 Eisner Awards showcase comics' diversity with Wonder Woman, Wayne Brady, Sonny Liew and 'Saga' By Blake Hennon The message from Eisner Awards voters and winners was simple enough: Comics are for everybody, and can be made by anybody. But it’s a complicated world. Actor and comedian Wayne Brady, a surprise guest Friday at the Oscars of comics, recalled a Hollywood studio meeting at which a man was surprised he liked sci-fi because he was black. “Then I had to proceed to school him on every comic book that I’d read since I was 8, and every show that I’ve watched, every bad Marvel show — remember back in the day the horrible version of Spider-Man they had on with the terry cloth suit … and the Hulk, Lou Ferrigno, the green washing off of his face … the Captain America film with the guy who used to be a football player and sells cars out in the Valley? Oh, I know my stuff.” The “Let’s Make a Deal” host revealed he’s ready to tell comics stories of his own and is working on an imprint called Level Next with Michael Davis, who made great strides for minority superheroes in the 1990s with “Static Shock” and Milestone Media. Several of the biggest winners at the 29th annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, presented as part of Comic-Con International at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel, celebrated diversity. “Saga” artist Fiona Staples and writer Brian K. Vaughan’s bestselling Image sci-fi series about a couple from warring species won four awards. -

Special Guests Chester Brown was born in Montreal in 1960 and is best known for his two nonction graphic novels: the meticulously researched and Harvey Award-winning Louis Riel and the controversial, critically acclaimed Paying for It. Brown began self-publishing his comic book series Yummy Fur at twenty-three, and has been publishing with D+Q since 1991. He is the author of The Playboy, I Never Liked You, The Little Man, and Ed The Happy Clown. Brown lives Chester Brown in Toronto, where he ran for Parliament twice as a member of the Libertarian Party of Canada. Comics and Authorship: An Introduction MAAHEEN AHMED Bio: Maaheen Ahmed (Research Foundation Flanders – FWO / Ghent University) is currently working on possibilities for conceptualizing the relationship between comics and different kinds of memories, ranging from personal memories to collective and medium-specific ones. With Benoît Crucifix, she is co-editing a critical anthology on this topic titled, Comics Memory: Archives and Styles (under contract with Palgrave Macmillan). Her main books include Openness of Comics (UP of Mississippi 2016) and Le Statut culturel de la bande dessinée/The Cultural Standing of Comics (Academia/L'Harmattan 2017), co-edited with Stéphanie Delneste and Jean-Louis Tilleuil and nominated for the Prix Papiers Nickelés. She recently received an ERC Starting Grant for her project on children in European comics. The Monkey Business of Authorship in Popular Media During a 2011 photography expedition in Indonesia, British nature photographer David Slater sought the attention of a group of curious crested black macaques. Left alone with the picture-ready camera equipment, one (or more) of the monkeys did exactly what every human being does nowadays with a camera: it took a selfie and did not stop at just one (Slater 2016b). The authorship of this viral photo became, as is often the case with the authorship of successful, profitable works, a legal concern and eventually the PETA stepped in on the monkey's behalf to claim its right to copyright (a right that is so far not extended to animals). Slater and PETA reached an agreement only this September with one of the clauses including donating a percentage of the earnings from the images for the protection of the monkeys and their habitat (Cascone 2017; Associated Press 2017).
