Newfoundland and Labrador Results AIMS 6TH ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL REPORT CARD (RC6) Newfoundland and Labrador High Schools Once again, Newfoundland and Labrador provides one of the widest set of measures in the region. Additionally, data for every achievement and engagement indicator measured in the AIMS’ Report Card is available online to everyone through the Department of Education’s K-12 Profile System. While the province already had the greatest depth of information available of any of the four Atlantic Provinces, this year sees the addition of one more new measure – participation in university preparatory courses. The wide number of measures is however, balanced with gaps in available data for many of the province’s smaller schools, meaning only 52 schools have final grades this year of 142 schools with high school enrollment. As always, AIMS will release whatever valid data we have been able to secure for every school on our website at www.aims.ca. Gonzaga High School in St. John’s is the top ranked school in Newfoundland and Labrador, maintaining its ‘B+’ grade. J.M. Olds Collegiate in Twillingate improved from a ‘B’ to a ‘B+’ and was the second place school in the province. Bay d’Espoir Academy earned a ‘B+’ and third place after not receiving a final grade last year, because of insufficient post secondary achievement data. Two schools showed improvement of more than one grade level, with Appalachia High School improving from a ‘C-’ to a ‘C+’ and Holy Heart High School in St. John’s rising from a ‘C+’ to a ‘B’. Two schools also saw their overall grade fall by more than one grade level. Last year’s top school, Dorset Collegiate, saw its grade fall from an ‘A-’ to a ‘B’ and Templeton Academy in Meadows went from a ‘B+’ to a ‘B-’. General • A more detailed breakdown of the results for each ranked high school is published as an insert in the April issue of Progress magazine. A copy of this insert can be found online at http://www.aims.ca/library/rc6insert.pdf • A further expanded data set, including the available results for all reported schools, plus expanded sub-measures for ranked schools is available online to allow for an inter-active cross school comparison on any available measure or a combination of measures. The AIMS Online Report Card can be found on our website at www.aims.ca. • No data is available for the Newfoundland School for the Deaf, the St. John’s Hospital School, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Youth Centre so they are not included in reported schools.

Learning about our own part of the earth can help us get a better understanding of the world at large. Much of the information now available about our province is aimed at young readers and people with at least a high school education. The Hitch-Hiker is intended to provide information which beginning adult readers can read and understand. This work has a special feature we hope readers will appreciate and enjoy. Many of the places written about in this book are seen through the eyes of an adult learner and other fictional characters. These characters were created to help add a touch of reality to the printed page. We hope the characters and the things they learn and talk about also give the reader a better understanding of our province. Above all, we hope this book challenges your curiosity and encourages you to search for more information about our land. Don McDonald Director of Programs and Services Newfoundland and Labrador Literacy Development Council ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to thank the many people who so kindly and eagerly helped me during the production of this book.

  • (PL-557) for NPA 879 to Overlay NPA
Number: PL- 557 Date: 20 January 2021 From: Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA) Subject: NPA 879 to Overlay NPA 709 (Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada) Related Previous Planning Letters: PL-503, PL-514, PL-521 _____________________________________________________________________ This Planning Letter supersedes all previous Planning Letters related to NPA Relief Planning for NPA 709 (Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada). In Telecom Decision CRTC 2021-13, dated 18 January 2021, Indefinite deferral of relief for area code 709 in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved an NPA 709 Relief Planning Committee’s report which recommended the indefinite deferral of implementation of overlay area code 879 to provide relief to area code 709 until it re-enters the relief planning window. Accordingly, the relief date of 20 May 2022, which was identified in Planning Letter 521, has been postponed indefinitely. The relief method (Distributed Overlay) and new area code 879 will be implemented when relief is required. Background Information: In Telecom Decision CRTC 2017-35, dated 2 February 2017, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) directed that relief for Newfoundland and Labrador area code 709 be provided through a Distributed Overlay using new area code 879. The new area code 879 has been assigned by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) and will be implemented as a Distributed Overlay over the geographic area of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador currently served by the 709 area code. The area code 709 consists of 211 Exchange Areas serving the province of Newfoundland and Labrador which includes the major communities of Corner Brook, Gander, Grand Falls, Happy Valley – Goose Bay, Labrador City – Wabush, Marystown and St.

  • Regional Government Consultation Burin Peninsula Sept
Regional Government Consultation Burin Peninsula Sept. 24th, 2011 Marystown, 8:30- 12:00 P.M. The meeting started with Robert Keenan, Community Cooperation Officer (CCO) with MNL, addressing the municipal officials. Mr. Keenan opened with a presentation on Regional Government and regionalization. In the first part of the presentation, he addressed the reasons for why MNL is examining regional government, and why they are examining it now. It was pointed out that these consultations are a follow-up to the three regional government discussion papers released by MNL in 2010 -- Continuities and Discontinuities, Searching for a Purpose, and The Umbrella of Protection. The CCO officer advanced MNL’s position that the current municipal structure needed to be reformed. The purpose of this much-needed reform would be to increase the efficiency, feasibility, and sustainability of municipalities, while protecting municipal autonomy. The CCO officer emphasized the need for reform at this time because municipalities need: • to become better organized; • to find ways to maintain and improve aging infrastructure; • to address the demographic difficulties that exist for many small towns; and • to account for the reduced financial and technical support available to municipalities from the provincial government. Mr. Keenan pointed out that neither the Provincial nor Federal Government has a plan for local government in Newfoundland and Labrador. Such a plan, however, is warranted, and municipalities ought to take the lead in putting forward ideas and suggestions to make them (municipalities) better and more sustainable. Mr. Keenan noted that municipal leaders are local leaders dealing with local problems. Further, it is local leaders, not Provincial government officials, who are better positioned to address the problems with the Province’s local government system.

  • Raised Shoreline Phenomena and Postglacial Emergence in South
