El Barco Fantasma Del 14 De Abril 1912 El barco fantasma del 14 de Abril 1912. Una novela de ficción basada en hechos reales con los detectives Flynn y O’Malley en una de sus últimas aventuras. Javier Torres Landa V. 2015. 1 Advertencia. Flynn y O'Malley son personajes ficticios, y Yo, es el autor de este escrito quien ha decidido utilizar el recurso que ofrecen los relatos de ficción utilizando indistintamente estas denominaciones en el transcurso del relato. Quizá esto cree algunas confusiones y/o problemas de redacción, de ortografía y/o de gramática o hasta de comprensión pero recuerden que nadie es perfecto, ningún escrito es perfecto. Por lo mismo siempre habrá algún aspecto, algún párrafo, alguna referencia que de una forma u otra no se llega a aclarar pero que constituye parte de las intenciones del autor. Las que expresadas en pocas palabras significa el tratar de involucrar al lector de manera que asimile el relato, reflexione sobre sus inconsistencias o defectos pero que en general disfrute de uno de los placeres que nuestra 'era cibernética' amenaza con terminar y que simplemente es que todavía tenemos la oportunidad de leer y hacer uso de nuestra imaginación. 2 1 Uno de los grandes misterios que aún permanecen como incógnita de aquella fatídica noche del 14 al 15 de Abril de 1912 es el reporte de un barco misterioso que los tripulantes del TITÁNIC vieron en las cercanías del trasatlántico una vez que hubieron colisionado con un iceberg, una aparición fantasmagórica (que pudo ser real y a la que no se dio la importancia que debería). La relevancia de ese reporte o de ese misterioso navío es que de hecho, si ese barco era real (como parece haber sido) podría haber representado el tan necesario auxilio requerido por el lujoso TITÁNIC que en su viaje inaugural irremediablemente se hundía. Como todos sabemos, para muchas cosas él hubiera no existe, pero aun así él hubiera no deja de ser una explicación para tratar de explicar lo inexplicable o de entender lo ocurrido y constantemente lo utilizamos, por lo que 'él hubiera' existe aunque la supuesta lógica indique lo contrario. Si ese barco misterioso o barco fantasma hubiera oído las señales del telégrafo originadas en el TITÁNIC, si el personal a bordo de ese barco hubiera sabido interpretar las bengalas solicitando socorro quizá la tragedia hubiera tenido otras proporciones y quizá la pérdida de vidas humanas hubiera sido mucho menor. Empero, lo que es más real que cualquier otra cosa es la consideración de que si en el mismo TITÁNIC se hubieran hecho caso de las múltiples advertencias sobre la presencia de icebergs flotando y moviéndose directamente en la ruta que seguía el barco, otra cosa hubiera ocurrido. Y esas advertencias fueron totalmente reales y totalmente comprobables y sin embargo por uno de aquellos misterios del destino no fueron tomadas en cuenta. 3 Si el Capitán Smith hubiera ignorado los absurdos deseos del Director Bruce Ismay y de J.P.Morgan (el financiero de la construcción) el TITÁNIC hubiera reducido su velocidad, quizá otra cosa hubiera pasado pues la alta velocidad y el innato temor de un ‘choque de frente’ hizo que se virara el timón con objeto de evitar la colisión pero la velocidad a la que surcaba las aguas el trasatlántico era demasiado alta para que el viraje evitara el roce con el iceberg. Hoy, a más de 100 años de distancia se dice que la velocidad del TITÁNIC no tuvo nada que ver con la desgracia, pero ya todos sabemos los efectos de la velocidad de cualquier objeto que impacta sobre otro, y por lo mismo, desestimar la velocidad exagerada del TITÁNIC solo tiene como objeto minimizar la responsabilidad del Director Ismay pues como es fácil comprender, la empresa White Star deseaba empequeñecer su responsabilidad total acerca del desastre pretendiendo atribuir el choque a otras causas y no a un mal manejo de la situación y por lo mismo 'proteger' la reputación del financiero J.P.Morgan de quien Bruce Ismay era portavoz. No puede dejar de pensarse que sea como se le vea, en este caso el iceberg era una enorme masa de hielo 'flotando' en el Atlántico, uno de los muchos trozos de hielo de diferentes tamaño que fueron reportados al TITÁNIC, reportes a los que no se les otorgó la importancia que tenían y si no se hubiera movido el timón tratando de evitar la colisión 'de frente', quizá en ese momento se hubiera evitado la tragedia, pues la lógica elemental, la lógica de 'primer grado' indica que una masa tan enorme como era la del TITÁNIC (más de 53,000 toneladas) al chocar con el iceberg, quizá lo hubiera movido, pues, repito, el iceberg flotaba sobre el agua, no era un objeto inmóvil, era arrastrado por la corriente, se movía, y puede ser que con una colisión de frente hubiera sido 'movido' por el trasatlántico con lo 4 que tal vez el inevitable daño hubiera sido menor a lo que fue. Quizá si hubiera habido más tiempo y se hubiera reaccionado más rápido y adecuadamente, no estaríamos hablando de la tragedia como lo hacemos aún hoy día, a más de 100 años de haber ocurrido. Si los botes salvavidas no hubieran sido reducidos en número, quizá más personas hubieran podido haber sido salvadas. Y como estas hay una y mil especulaciones que tienen el tinte imposible del hubiera. En fin, en la tragedia del TITÁNIC y su hundimiento hay demasiados hubiera, pero quizá ninguno es tan grande y grave como la salvación de vidas que representaba el barco fantasmagórico que a tan solo unas millas de distancia hubiera representado la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte de muchas personas. Quizá no se hubieran perdido tantas vidas, quizá no se hubiera evitado el hundimiento del TITÁNIC, el quizá, él hubiera entra en el terreno de lo posible pero aún y cuando se hubieran salvado más vidas, la tragedia no se hubiera podido evitar. El caprichoso destino estaba escrito y posiblemente nada hubiera podido 5 modificarlo. El TITÁNIC surcó el Atlántico por un lapso de poco más de 96 horas; tardó aproximadamente dos horas y media en hundirse totalmente, ocasionando la muerte a 1,517 personas. Y eso precisamente es lo que duele y lo que no se acepta en su totalidad a pesar de ser un hecho. Y por lo mismo, por esas y muchas otras consideraciones relativas es que estábamos ante la presencia del Jefe Mc Dermont quien recordaba que en una ocasión previa, no muchos tiempo atrás, O’Malley y Yo estuvimos involucrados en un asesinato que tuvo su origen en hechos ocurridos durante este fatídico viaje inaugural del TITÁNIC. A muchas personas nos parece increíble el que tantos factores negativos se hubieran conjugado en ese momento determinado y en ese específico lugar en el tiempo y en la historia. Sin ser o pretender ser expertos en lo relativo al TITÁNIC ha sido nuestra impresión que contribuyó en mucho a la magnitud de la tragedia la tardanza en entender y descifrar los daños ocasionados por la colisión con el iceberg y el tiempo perdido en enviar las señales de auxilio que el Capitán Edward John Smith ordenó aproximadamente a las 12:30, 50 minutos después del choque. 6 Por supuesto la falta de claridad en los procedimientos de emergencia (muy rudimentarios (se puede afirmar) que estaban vigentes en esos días) tuvieron negativos efectos en los resultados de la tragedia principalmente en lo que se refiere a los buques que se encontraban en las cercanías del desastre y que se piensa pudieron haber acudido más pronto al auxilio de los pasajeros y tripulantes del TITÁNIC. Y en su descargo se argumentó que ‘no sabían’ lo que estaba pasando. Hoy, con las comunicaciones instantáneas, esta situación se nos hace imposible de aceptar, pero no podemos dejar de considerar que en ese 1912, no había las comunicaciones que tenemos hoy y que todos damos por un hecho que estemos donde estemos, comunicarnos con otros no solo es probable sino totalmente posible. Tal vez, si hubiera habido mayores precauciones, la tragedia hubiera sido menor, pues en el hundimiento del orgulloso TITÁNIC se presentaron factores internos y externos que se conjugaron para hacer de ese viaje inaugural la tragedia marítima que aún hoy, se recuerda con tristeza y amargura. Aún y cuando no ha sido la mayor tragedia marítima en cuanto a número de víctimas, eso no es paliativo ninguno: el que posteriormente haya habido otros hundimientos con mayor número de sacrificados no es ni puede ser un consuelo, ni un atenuante ni disminuye o cambia en nada lo ocurrido con el TITÁNIC. Las señales enviadas por el telegrafista John G. Phillips por medio del Código Internacional Morse (recientemente introducido) fueron: CQD CQD CQD DE MGY MGY. CQD era la señal de emergencia que se utilizaba en ese tiempo y que se repetía dos veces en secuencia inmediata para alertar al receptor que se trataba de una verdadera emergencia y no un error de transmisión. 7 En el caso del TITÁNIC se añadió la nueva señal de emergencia que recién se comenzaba a utilizar: el hoy muy conocido e identificable SOS que sin embargo en esos días aún no era entendida en su cabal significación ni por los marineros ni por los telegrafistas y tampoco era utilizada en todos los mensajes de emergencia. Podríamos afirmar sin temor a equivocarnos que en ese tiempo, las comunicaciones no eran ni remotamente como son en la actualidad y además, podríamos resaltar muchos errores y fallas, pero tal hacer sería injusto pues lo haríamos con el criterio de nuestros días y con las facilidades de comunicación de que hoy disponemos olvidándonos que en esa noche de 1912, todas esas facilidades -que nos parecen obvias y están a disposición de casi cualquiera- no existían en esos días.
