It just keeps getting better and better. This year’s Seniors’ and Elders’ IDay Celebration took place on October 5th this year. It normally serves as a kick-off event for Seniors’ and Elders’ Month - October and to celebrate the energy and vitality of seniors in our community! The ANAVETS 303 Pipers & Drums band lead the participants to the stage. Thelma Meade provided the Traditional Aboriginal Blessing. Jan Sanderson, the Deputy Minister of Healthy Living, Youth and Seniors brought greetings on behalf of the department. City Councillor Grant Nordman brought greetings on behalf of the City of Winnipeg. Then the entertainment started! The lineup was fabulous. Claudia Chernitsky lead a Zumba Gold demonstration followed by some local talent Lynda Dobbin-Turner, a singer from Portage la Prairie. Age & Opportunity’s Belly Dancing group showed that people of any age can belly dance, have fun and exercise at the same time. Active Living Coalition for Older Adults (ALCOA) lead an exercise break to wind up the crowd for the fast-steppin’ United Steppers, a jigging and square dancing group. Members ranged in age from 9 to 13. Then things picked up even more with an outstanding performance by local, legendary, country music entertainer, Ray St. Germain. A free lunch was then served and the day was topped off with the lively performance of J.J. Lavallee, on the fiddle, with uncle Darren Lavallee on guitar. These two always get the crowd up dancing! Once again the event was a total success thanks to all of the performers, volunteers, planning committee members, and of course, the sponsors - Seniors and Healthy Aging Secretariat, Great West Life, MGI Wealth and Manitoba Association of Senior Centres (MASC). 8. Quiet Hero - The Ken Ploen Story "Quiet Hero" is the story of the greatest decade in the history of the Winnipeg Football Club, but also the story of one of the most remarkable football players on either side on the Canada-U.S. border. The young man who brought Iowa its first Rose Bowl was also a young man who finished with an engineering degree, married another Iowa graduate, raised three terrific kids in Winnipeg and has remained a leader in his community for nearly 60 years. Oh, yes, he also led the Bombers to four Grey Cup championships in six appearances in 10 years, from 1957-66.

This is the story of Kenny Ploen, “The Quiet Hero,” and how he turned the period from 1957-1966 into the greatest 10 years in the history of Winnipeg football.
