Volume 121, Number 1, January and February 2010 75 NEW STATE RECORDS OF AQUATIC INSECTS FOR OHIO, U.S.A. (EPHEMEROPTERA, PLECOPTERA, TRICHOPTERA, COLEOPTERA)1 Michael J. Bolton2 ABSTRACT: Biomonitoring of Ohio streams by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has found new state records for the Ephemeroptera (mayflies): Baetis brunneicolor McDunnough, Iswaeon anoka (Daggy), Paracloeodes fleeki McCafferty and Lenat, Plauditus cestus (Provonsha and McCafferty), and Rhithrogena manifesta Eaton; the Plecoptera (stoneflies): Pteronarcys cf. biloba Newman; the Trichop- tera (caddisflies): Brachycentrus numerosus (Say) and Psilotreta rufa (Hagen); and the Coleoptera (bee- tles): Gyretes sinuatus LeConte, Dicranopselaphus variegatus Horn, and Microcylloepus pusillus (Le Conte). Additional records are given for the mayfly Paracloeodes minutus (Daggy). KEY WORDS: Ohio, state record, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Coleoptera The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency conducts biological and water qual- ity studies of Ohio streams to ascertain the condition of the aquatic resource. One component of these studies is an evaluation of the macroinvertebrate communities. As a result of this sampling, species of aquatic insects in the Ephemeroptera (may- flies), Plecoptera (stoneflies), Trichoptera (caddisflies), and Coleoptera (beetles) orders have been collected that have never been reported from Ohio. Randolph and McCafferty (1998) compiled the first state list of mayflies for Ohio. Gaufin (1956) produced a state list of stoneflies for Ohio with additions by Tkac and Foote (1978), Robertson (1979), and Fishbeck (1987). Listing of species distributions by state in Stewart and Stark (2002) and Stark and Armitage (2000, 2004) incorporated Ohio records found in the various revisionary publications. Huryn and Foote (1983) pro- duced the first comprehensive state list of caddisflies which was amended by Mac Lean and MacLean (1984), Usis and MacLean (1986), Garono and MacLean (1988), Usis and Foote (1989), and Keiper and Bartolotta (2003). -

In total, approximately 169 acres (68 hectares) are being proposed for revised critical habitat. The proposed revision of critical habitat is located in Comal and Hays Counties, Texas. The Permit Area for the Proposed RHCP and the area of potential effect for this Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is Comal County in central Texas. Riqueza genérica y distribución de Elmidae (Insecta: Coleoptera, Byrrhoidea) en el departamento del Valle del Cauca, Colombia Generic richness and distribution of Elmidae (Insecta: Coleoptera, Byrrhoidea) in the Valle del Cauca Department of Colombia Marcela González-Córdoba, María del Carmen Zúñiga y Verónica Manzo Resumen Elmidae es una familia de coleópteros acuáticos frecuentes en corrientes de aguas limpias y de amplia utilización en estudios de bioindicación ambiental. Este trabajo se planteó con el fin de reconocer la riqueza de los ég neros de Elmidae en el departamento del Valle del Cauca y recopilar la información de distribución a partir de datos de colecciones biológicas. Se revisaron 3305 individuos (larvas y adultos), depositados principalmente en el Museo de Entomología de la Universidad del Valle que corresponden a colectas entre 1991 y 2014 y representan 116 localidades, 19 municipios y 63 corrientes hídricas, pertenecientes a las cuencas de los ríos Anchicayá, Cauca, Dagua y San Juan y las regiones naturales Andina y Pacífica. Se documentaron 16 ég neros: 11 de Elminae (Austrolimnius, Cylloepus, Heterelmis, Huleechius, Macrelmis, Microcylloepus, Neoelmis, Notelmis, Onychelmis, Xenelmis y Stenhelmoides, este último sin datos de colecciones locales) y cinco de Larainae (Disersus, Hexanchorus, Phanocerus, Pharceonus y Pseudodisersus), que se distribuyeron entre 110 y 2440 m s.n.m., pero con mayor riqueza genérica entre 1000 y 2000 m s.n.m. Heterelmis y Macrelmis fueron los géneros de mayor distribución y el río Guabas tuvo la mayor representatividad genérica. Se amplía el área de distribución para el Valle del Cauca de Austrolimnius, Huleechius, Notelmis y Xenelmis. Palabras clave. Insectos acuáticos. -

ABSTRACT. A taxonomic key for the genera of Elmidae (Coleoptera, Byrrhoidea) occurring in Goiás State, Brazil, including new records and distributional notes. Despite their great diversity and high abundance in Neotropical aquatic environments, the fauna of Elmidae remains practically unknown in some areas and even entire biomes in this region. In this work we bring, for the first time, faunistic data for the Elmidae of central Brazil. The aim of this work was to inventory the Elmidae fauna in central, southwestern and southeastern Goiás State, Brazil and to produce a taxonomic key, at genus level, for adults from the studied region. The taxonomic key presented herein offers means for the identification of all the 13 genera known to occur in Goiás, 11 of them being new records for the State. Moreover, the number of named species registered for Goiás increased from one to nine. KEYWORDS. Cerrado biome; Insecta; Neotropics; Riffle beetles. -

ZooKeys 77 : 1 – 16 . doi: 10.3897/ zookeys.77.935 Abstract Marstonia comalensis, a poorly known nymphophiline gastropod (originally described from Comal Creek, Texas) that has often been confused with Cincinnatia integra, is re-described and the generic placement of this species, which was recently allocated to Marstonia based on unpublished evidence, is confi rmed by anatomical study. Marstonia comalensis is a large congener having an ovate-conic, openly umbilicate shell and penis having a short fi lament and oblique, squarish lobe bearing a narrow gland along its distal edge. It is well diff erentiated morphologically from congeners having similar shells and penes and is also geneti- cally divergent relative to those congeners that have been sequenced (mtCOI divergence 3.0–8.5%). -

Hauwert Balcones Canyonland Preserve, City of Austin, Austin Water, Wildland Conservation Division, Austin, Texas 78738, USA ABSTRACT The Barton Springs segment of the Edwards (Balcones Fault Zone) Aquifer is a prolifi c karst aquifer system containing the fourth largest spring in Texas, Barton Springs. The Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer supplies drinking water for ~60,000 people, provides habitat for federally listed endangered salamanders, and sustains the iconic recreational Barton Springs pool. The aquifer is composed of Lower Cretaceous carbonate strata with porosity and permeability controlled by dep- ositional facies, diagenesis, structure, and karstifi cation creating a triple permeability system (matrix, fractures, and conduits). Groundwater fl ow is rapid within an inte- grated network of conduits discharging at the springs. Upgradient watersheds pro- vide runoff to the recharge zone, and the majority of recharge occurs in the streams crossing the recharge zone. The remainder is direct recharge from precipitation and other minor sources (infl ows from Trinity Group aquifers, the San Antonio segment, the bad-water zone, and anthropogenic sources). The long-term estimated mean water budget is 68 ft3/s (1.93 m3/s). The Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conserva- tion District developed rules to preserve groundwater supplies and maximize spring fl ow rates by preserving at least 6.5 ft3/s (0.18 m3/s) of spring fl ow during extreme drought.
