    Middle Eastern Festivals Islamic: Moulid el-Nabi, Milad, Milad an-Nabi, or Mawlid un-Nabi (The Prophet’s Birthday) Prophet Muhammad (also Mohammed, Muhammed, Mahomet, and other variants) is the founder of Islam and is regarded by Muslims as the last messenger and prophet of God. Muhammad was born in the year 570 AD and his birthday is celebrated each year on 12 Rabi el-Awal, following the Islamic calendar. Processions are held, homes or mosques are decorated, charity and food is distributed, stories about the life of Muhammad are narrated, and poems are recited by children. The main purpose of Moulid el-Nabi gatherings is to remember, observe, discuss and celebrate the advent of the birth and teachings of the holy Prophet Muhammad. Ramadan Ramadan is a celebration that takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, when the Quran (the central religious text of Islam) was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The name of the feast is the name of the month. Muslims celebrate Ramadan for an entire month. It is a time for prayers (some people pray 5 times a day), friendship, and thinking about how to help others. Many people fast during the hours of daylight for the entire month. Before the sun rises, families gather to eat a big breakfast. This breakfast before dawn is called Suhoor (also called Sehri, Sahari and Sahur in other languages). Each family member then fasts until the sun sets in the evening. After the sun sets, they have a big supper. This evening meal for breaking the daily fast is called Iftar and is often done as a community, with Muslims gathering to break their fast together.

While parts of the world are starting to re-open, the COVID-19 pandemic is still very much impacting all of our lives and forcing everyone to make adjustments to how they celebrate even the holiest of days. Much like we did last year, Premise engaged our contributor network around the world to gauge the impact of the ongoing pandemic on Ramadan. Through our survey, which reached over 25,000 contributors in 31 countries, we asked a number of questions around the holiday and the enduring impact of COVID-19, surfacing insights regarding: ■ How are Muslims celebrating Ramadan this year? ■ Is the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to impact how Muslims observe the holiday? ■ Are we seeing a change in contributor behavior surrounding Ramadan compared to last year when Ramadan was celebrated during the early stages of the pandemic, especially with vaccinations becoming more widespread? Key Judgements Here’s what we learned: ■ COVID-19 continues to have a major impact on holiday observance: 70% of respondents indicating the virus is impacting their plans. ■ Life is returning to some semblance of normalcy: Despite high levels of concern surrounding the continued pandemic, Premise contributors are significantly more inclined to participate in community events and other public celebrations compared to last year. This is despite high levels of concern around the ongoing pandemic and may represent increased risk due to low global vaccination rates.

    USING ARTEFACTS TO TEACH ABOUT ISLAM General Introduction Artefacts can be used either as demonstration tools, or as an interactive resource to encourage investigation, questioning and independent thinking. One artefact can focus people’s attention and bring in a whole range of information and concepts which remain ‘pegged’ in the memory to the artefact. These notes aim to give teachers some ideas and guidelines on how to use artefacts in teaching about Ramadan. Sources for each artefact and addresses of the sources will be added and updated in due course. USING ARTEFACTS TO TEACH ABOUT RAMADAN Islamic Year and Moon Display A Moon Display can be constructed to help explain the phases of the moon and their relation to the beginning and end of the Islamic month of Ramadan (and all the others too). A board depicting a dark horizon and sky with holes cut in it showing the shapes of the moon at different stages. Behind it a circular, dark sky-coloured board with a white circle under the holes turns on a handle so the white part shows through the holes one at a time. Something like this could be made as a class activity using stiff card and colour markers/crayons and scissors, with a wooden peg as a handle, or making the circle protrude beyond the edge of the face-board so that the edge of the circle can be used to turn it.
