  • CLOS DU MONT-OLIVET Lirac Rouge
Wine Facts CLOS DU MONT-OLIVET Lirac Rouge The family estate of Clos du Mont-Olivet is the collector’s choice for traditional, aromatic and age-worthy southern Rhône blends. This multi- generational estate was one of the first wineries North Berkeley Imports partnered with in the south of France more than 25 years ago; since then, the estate has come to symbolize both what we seek out in winemaker- partners and importantly, what we hold true and dear in great wine. Always elegant, aromatic and long-lived, these wines reflect not only the rich character of southern Rhône terroir but also the subtle, spicy personalities of the region’s native grapes. Clos du Mont-Olivet is “one of the great estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape,” says the Wine Advocate. WINERY: Clos du Mont-Olivet WINEMAKER: Thierry Sabon ESTABLISHED: 1932 REGION: FRANCE • Rhône Valley • Châteauneuf-du-Pape APPELLATION: Lirac AOC BLEND: 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 20% Cinsault VINEYARDS: Estate vineyards are located on the “rive droite” of Rhône river, due west of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, near the villages of Saint-Laurent des Arbres and Saint-Genies-de-Comolas. A selection from some 12 parcels with soils that are sandy, with flint and ‘galets roulés,’ or large quartz stones. AGE OF VINES: 20-30 years WINEMAKING: Hand-harvested. Destemmed; fermented on indigenous yeasts in cement tanks. Aged 95% in large foudre and 5% in older French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. TASTING IMPRESSIONS: Aromas of black cherry, red plum, raspberry, baking spice, wild herbs. Medium-bodied, suave tannins, fresh. The landscape mingles with the vines and cereal crops – an ever-changing canvas of colour: intensely green towards the end of winter, the colour of straw at the end of spring, and deep ochre during the final months of summer. 1 All over the Alentejo there are archaeological markers suggesting that wine has Historybeen an important part of life up to the present day. Whilst it is not known exactly when wine and viticulture was introduced to the Alentejo, there is plenty of evidence that they were already part of the day-to-day life in the Alentejo by the time the Romans arrived in the south of Portugal. It is thought that the Tartessians, an ancient civilisation based in the south of the Iberian Peninsula and heirs of the Andalusian Megalithic culture, were the first to domesticate vineyards and introduce winemaking principles in the Alentejo.

West Side Wine Club May 2011 President’s Musings ! ! April showers bring…. May showers. Our cool spring continues, although the grapevines have budded, the next stumbling block is blossoming. Once blossoming has occurred, the rate of ripening is has little room for variation. A grape, after all, can only ripen so fast. But there are factors at work that do effect ripening. In a perfect year, we would have 80 degree days all day, never over- but Scheduled Meetings rarely under. January 19, 2011 During this time period, we watch carefully hoping to purchase good grapes. This year has been a Crush Talk struggle so far. Viticulturists in eastern Washington have been hesitant to commit so far. This means that when the growers tells us what’s available, we will need to Gala jump on our orders to insure we can get a variety of grapes. Some grapes will not be a problem. Others will be difficult to purchase. Sammy has been in discussions with growers and will let us know February 16, 2011 when he knows more. Red Bordeaux Tasting But this is also a time to think about purchasing barrels. May15th is the deadline for purchasing February 27, 2011 barrels at Bouchard cooperages at a discount and with no shipping cost. They make Damy, Vicard, Argyle Winery Tour Billon and Cadus barrels. • Varietiesportuguese GRAPE VARIETIES
VarietiesPORTUGUESE GRAPE VARIETIES For the most part Portuguese grape growers have wisely resisted the impulse to plant “foreign” grape varieties and instead have gone forward with making wines that are uniquely regional. So at a time when critics complain that wines from throughout the world are beginning to taste similar, Portugal’s commitment to native varieties means that it continues to make indigenous styles of wine. This means that although winemakers may be fermenting and aging wines in the same manner that their colleagues elsewhere have been doing for some time. Unique conditions and historic grape varieties insure that Portuguese wines will remain distinctively different. The future is very bright, but even today, after only a brief time of orientation to the world market, Portugal is producing some of the world’s most exciting wines, especially when the concept of “value” factors into the equation, as it always must do in assessing any commercial product. Throughout the country better varietals are being planted in more suitable soils and growing conditions. There is a new generation of winemaker eager to discover the quality potential of their properties. The awareness has dawned that the best wine originates in the vineyard. Along with this spirit, a trend has developed to produce varietal wines from native grapes that constitutes one of the most interesting aspects of the current Portuguese wine scene. Quantities are miniscule but the wines have developed a devoted following on the domestic market. Unfortunately few are yet available for export. whiteWHITE VARIETALS ALVARINHO: An aromatic varietal (acacia flowers, apple, honey) this grape produces outstanding white wines in a small sub-region of the Vinho Verde DO around Melgaço and Monção.

Spring 2012 CHEZ FRANÇOIS Restaurant Volume 25 Issue 1 555 Main Street, Vermilion, Ohio 44089 • www.Chezfrancois.com • A publication for friends and guests of Chez François. Dear Friend of Chez François, Thank you for your patronage this past year. We feel blessed to have you as our guest and we look forward to continued success this coming year. Fair, fair...what is all this talk about fairness? Few things are ever truly fair. It seems those who complain about fairness are the ones that don’t really do anything. They never learn that you have to work hard in life, yet feel entitled to many rights they never earned. When in fact, the only right they have in America is the right of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. From early childhood we were taught that if you believe in an idea and work hard to execute and have faith in that idea, then you will be successful. It is easy to have an idea, but quite another to commit the time and effort on a daily basis. Inevitably, there will be negative influences along the way and those who will try to criticize, but diligence and persistence guide one through these times. Criticism is fine, as long as it’s constructive and one learns and improves from it, which is what we’ve done for the past 25 years...always striving for improvement in the pursuit of excellence. So if others are more successful than we are, bear in mind it is likely the result of a great deal of time and devotion towards a solid concept and often of great sacrifice too.
