UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CONGREGATION NEWSLETTER 1301 Gladewood Drive Blacksburg, VA 24060 Website: www.uucnrv.org July 2017 E-mail: [email protected] Year 52, Issue 7 Phone: (540) 552-9716 Message from Our Incoming President Our Year of Possibilities Tim Pickering As I step into the role of Board President, I am looking forward to the coming year with a sense of anticipation and some trepidation. The past year has seen a number of changes, both nationally and in our congregational community. It has been unsettling in many ways. We unexpectedly lost a well-liked minister, Rev. Dara Olandt, which led to the appointment of Rev. Don Rollins as our Interim Minister. He brought us a wealth of new ideas and introduced a number of new ways to approach ministry. Music played a larger role in our services. He also led us to a new way to explore and focus the enthusiasm many of us feel for social justice efforts using the Gardiner Model. As is often the case, delving into new ways of doing things can produce anxiety as we wonder, “How will this all turn out?” I am pleased that the congregation decided we should give the Gardiner approach a “test drive” and selected a multi-generational topic – climate change/the environment – to be our test case in the coming year. The Social Justice Planning Task Force is already hard at work, and more information can be found on page 6. While all this was going on, the Search Committee was busy looking for a new settled minister. I believe we have found a wonderful candidate in Rev. Pam Philips who will join us August 1. I am looking forward to working with her in her first year of ministry. Last year we developed an inspirational Mission Statement, and this year we just adopted a new Vision Statement to lead us into the future. I look forward to working with Pam and the Board in the coming year to do all we can to turn this vision into actions that express our values. Since Pam and I will both be “newbies” in our jobs, there may be some missteps along the way, but I am confident that with your help and understanding, they will be overcome. What a wonderful opportunity we all have to build a new version of beloved community together. It is a year of possibilities for us. Your ideas and suggestions are always welcome. As of July 1, feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Our Mission: Inspire. Create. Transform. Inspire spiritual and ethical growth. Create compassionate community. Transform our community and the world through courageous love. Unitarian Universalist Congregation, Blacksburg, VA July 2017 Contact Information Upcoming Events Interim Minister: Rev.
