Sammy Figueroa has long been regarded as one of the world’s great musicians. As a much-admired percussionist he provided the rhythmical framework for hundreds of hits and countless recordings. Well-known for his versatility and professionalism, he is equally comfortable in a multitude of styles, from R & B to rock to pop to electronic to bebop to Latin to Brazilian to New Age. But Sammy is much more than a mere accompanist: when Sammy plays percussion he tells a story, taking the listener on a journey, and amazing audiences with both his flamboyant technique and his subtle nuance and phrasing. Sammy Figueroa is now considered to be the most likely candidate to inherit the mantles of Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barretto as one of the world’s great congueros. Sammy Figueroa was born in the Bronx, New York, the son of the well-known romantic singer Charlie Figueroa. His first professional experience came at the age of 18, while attending the University of Puerto Rico, with the band of bassist Bobby Valentin. During this time he co-founded the innovative Brazilian/Latin group Raices, which broke ground for many of today’s fusion bands. Raices was signed to a contract with Atlantic Records and Sammy returned to New York, where he was discovered by the great flautist Herbie Mann. Sammy immediately became one of the music world’s hottest players and within a year he had appeared with John McLaughlin, the Brecker Brothers and many of the world’s most famous pop artists. By Cary Ginell. Milwaukee: Hal Leonard Books, 2013. 190 pp. $18.99. Very few jazz musicians can say that their band had a Top 20 single and a Top 20 album. Within that elite group of artists, only two men can state in the same breath that they also performed on jazz’s best-selling album of all time, Kind of Blue. One is Miles Davis and the other is Julian “Cannonball” Adderley. Cannonball’s success in album sales is just one measure of his achievements, albeit a tangible one. However, a casual stroll through the practice rooms of any jazz school in the country or jazz club in a city will aurally reveal the sheer volume of musicians that practice, perform, and revere the vocabulary that poured from Cannonball’s saxophone. Yet, despite the respect that Cannonball has been accorded over the years, both measureable and immeasurable, there is relatively little in the way of published biographical information. With the exception of the occasional feature in a periodical, an entry in The Encyclopedia of Jazz, a handful of scholarly works, and a few publications geared toward theory or discography,1 Mr. Adderley’s biography has gone largely unwritten. Furthermore, it can be said definitively that there is nothing in the marketplace that even closely resembles a comprehensive biography. Cary Ginell’s Walk Tall is one of the first publications that sets theory, analysis, and discography on the back burner in favor of history/biography. -

Abstract Sampling can be described as the reuse of a fragment of another artist's recording in a new musical work. This project aims at developing an algorithm that, given a database of candidate recordings, can detect samples of these in a given query. The problem of sample identification as a music information retrieval task has not been addressed before, it is therefore first defined and situated in the broader context of sampling as a musical phenomenon. The most relevant research to date is brought together and critically reviewed in terms of the requirements that a sample recognition system must meet. The assembly of a ground truth database for evaluation was also part of the work and restricted to hip hop songs, the first and most famous genre to be built on samples. Techniques from audio fingerprinting, remix recognition and cover detection, amongst other research, were used to build a number of systems investigating different strategies for sample recognition.
