Pride Adviser Department of Geological Sciences Professor M. R. Saltzman ABSTRACT The Borden Delta (Osagean; Tournaisian-Visean) represents a classic siliciclastic basin filling succession. Historically, the Borden Delta was thought to be deposited in response to tectonic activity centered around a peripheral bulge associated with the newly formed Acadian Highlands in the east. As the highlands eroded, the sediments were transported and deposited in the basin. This report proposes that the sea level fluctuations recorded in the Borden Delta rocks were formed in response to Gondwanan glaciations. Lithologic data from South America and chemostratigraphic data from numerous localities globally support this idea. The rocks in the study area were subdivided into three Primary Depositional Centers (PDC-I, II, III) based on lithologic and stratigraphic characteristics. The rocks in PDC-I (northeastern Kentucky) were deposited during the lowstand systems tract and the transgressive systems tract of the Vanceburg Sequence. Palynologically, the rocks in PDC-I belong to the PC Biozone of Higgs et al. (1988). The rocks in PDC-II (south-central Kentucky) represent parts of two different third order sequences (Vanceburg and Cumberland Sequences). In the eastern part of PDC-II, the Borden succession is represented only by the Nancy Member. -

Relatively few sections have been studied. However, those published so far demonstrate considerable similarities in the palynofloras between Arctic regions. Based on the published record, we present a compilation of 31 last occurrences (LOs), first occurrences (FOs), and some abundance events that have correlation potential around the Arctic. The chronostratigraphic resolution is relatively low, and the lack of independent age control hampers exact age assignments. But for most of these successions, palynology is the only dating tool available. RÉSUMÉ Le Carbonifère de la région arctique d’aujourd’hui fait état d’une association abondante et diversifiée de palynomorphes terrestres, en particulier de successions du Mississippien. Relativement peu de sections ont été étudiées. Celles publiées jusqu’ici montrent toutefois des similarités considérables des palynoflores entre les régions arctiques. En nous basant sur les documents publiés, nous présentons une compilation des 31 dernières occurrences (DO), des premières occurrences (PO) et de certains phénomènes d’abondance qui pourraient être corrélés dans la région de l’Arctique. -

Box 413, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53201, USA ABSTRACT Three glacial episodes are identifi ed in Upper Devonian and Mississippian strata in South America using sedimentologic, stratigraphic, paleontological, bore hole, and outcrop data. The fi rst glacial episode is of late Famennian (“Strunian”) age and is interpreted from strata in basins of Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru, where ice sheets and alpine glaciers reached coastal and marine settings. Biostratigraphi- cally, these strata correspond to the Biostratigraphically, these strata correspond to the Retispora lepidophyta–Indotriradites explanata or LE Zone and the Retispora lepidophyta–Verrucosisporites nitidus or LN Zone. Spore zones of Western Europe. The second glacial episode occurred during the late middle to early late Tour naisian and is recorded in the subsurface of the Solimões Basin (Juruá and Jandiatuba sub- basins) of northwestern Brazil and possibly in Bolivia and Argentina.
