Pons, Co-Chair Professor Charlene Villaseñor Black, Co-Chair This thesis presents the concept of textual poch@ through Bay Area-based artist, Rio Yañez’s artwork. The textual poch@ is an individual who experiences marginalization and/or has to justify themselves for deviating from their society’s dominant narratives and cultural tastes. Their deviation results in their own interpretation and reconfiguration of their culture (usually associated with aspects of their identity, such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, physical abilities) through a rasquache framework – in terms of making do with what they have to create something new. Through visual and textual analyses, I focus on two of Yañez’s digital art collections, Morrissey-inspired artwork and Japanese-influence portraiture series, as my case studies. In doing so, I demonstrate how these two collections push against essentialism and unfix Chicanx/Latinx identity as it is tied to dominant Chicanx/Latinx cultural practices and tastes. ii The thesis of María Daniela Z. A number of specific functionalities, such as the exact look-up of melodies from an existing database or classification of music into well-known genres, can now be executed on a large scale, and are even available as consumer services from several well-known social media and mobile phone companies. In spite of these advances, robust representations of music that allow efficient execution of tasks, seemingly simple to many humans, such as identifying a cover song, that is, a new recording of an old song, or breaking up a song into its constituent structural parts, are yet to be invented. Motivated by this challenge, we introduce a method for determining approximate structural sequence representations purely from the chromagram of songs without adopting any prior knowledge from musicology. -

Jose Anguiano [email protected] Mexican Blood, American Heart: Listening for Home, Gender and Affect in Chicana/o Smiths/Morrissey fandom This Night Has Opened My Eyes On December 10th 2009 Morrissey was in concert in Los Angeles in support of his new release “Swords,” a compilation of previously unreleased B-sides. I ventured out there with two friends acting as research assistants, a video camera, an audio recorder, and a clip board full of research consent forms to see if any fans would talk with me about their Morrissey fandom. We arrived at 3:30pm to find approximately thirty people waiting in line for a show that started at 8:00pm. The low number of fans waiting in line reflected the fact that most fans had reserved seats except for small general admission “pit” at the front of the stage. All the fans in line had general admission tickets and arrived as early as they could to vie for a spot near the front of the stage. The fans appeared to be of various ethnic backgrounds, ages and styles of dress. I noticed that whites and Latinos made up most of the fans in line but I would later find much more diversity in ethnic backgrounds as I went around and talked with fans. Of interest to me right away was the one African-American woman in line, who would later refuse to even speak to us, the young Latino rockabilly kids in the middle of the pack and the group of white youth that were first in line. -

Jak podają źródła, w 1948 roku francuski badacz, kompozytor, akustyk Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) nagrał za pomocą mikrofonu dźwięki naturalne m.in. (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku. W 1951 roku powstało pierwsze studio muzyki elektronicznej przy Rozgłośni Radia Zachodnioniemieckiego w Kolonii (NWDR- Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk). Tu tworzyli: H. Eimert (Glockenspiel 1953), K.
