Professor, Dept. of Telugu, HOD Faculty of Arts Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad, Telengana. Literature and society walk together hand in hand. In fact, they are inter-wined with each other. Telugu literature has evolved parallel to the sociological changes of every generation. Over the centuries Telugu literature has reflected the societal representation and resistance from time to time. My main focus, through this paper is to depict how Telugu literature reflected the changing times and affected social resistances during those times. BEGINNING OF RESISTANCE IN TELUGU POETRY Untill 11th Century AD, Telugu literature, particularly Telugu poetry, traversed through the ―Marga‖ system. Marga is a conventional method of literature which has certain boundaries, limitations based on ―Gana‖ and ―Yathi‖. The Royalty were the lead characters of the poems and the predominant essence was romanticism. Path breaking poetry in Telugu came in 12th Century through Palkurki Somana (1160 to 1240). According to literary experts, Somana was the first to introduce the concept of ―dwipada chandassu‖ where the poem‘s meaning could be derived in pairs of lines. While changing the subject from the royalty to common people, he even advocated a new philosophy that mythological characters need not be the core topics of poetry. Local legends became his main characters. One such gem is Basava Puranam, which explicitly depicted the socio, economic and political situation. This is the generation that introduced a revolutionary style of writings, which was also christened as ―Shiva Kavi Yuga‖. Basaveswara and Mallikarjuna Panditharadhya, who were instrumental in revival of Shivite cult have become the lead characters of Basava Puranam. Shatakas and Keertans, which became popular in 15th Century AD have followed the same tradition. One such legendary saint poet is Tallapaka Annamacharya. Annamacharya (Mar 22, 1408 to April 4, 1503) has penned over 32,000 keertanas. The common people believe that these keertanas have brought Lord Venkateswara very near to them. Some of these keertanas reverberate through the Tirumala Hills, the famous abode of Lord Venkateswara, even today. ―Brahmamokkate Parabrahmammokate‖ (God is universal and one) and ―Ye kulajudanainaneme‖ (To which ever cast I belong to) were some of the gems from Annamacharya which defied the system and traditions of the era. The then ruler Saluva Narasinga Rayulu, who heard some of the romantic poems of the saint poet asked him to write Volume: 1| January – 2019 www.baou.edu.in 6 The Journey of Indian Languages: Perspective on Culture and Society ISSN: poetry about him. But the saint poet turned him down saying ―Narahari Keertana naanina Jihwa orula Nutimpabodu (the tongue which praised the Lord will not praise others).‖ A special mention about Pothana, who also belonged to the 15th Century, should be made. He defied Kings and Kings‘ Courts. He dedicated his Bhagavatam to Lord Rama. ―Immanujeswaradhamulakichi ninu ammanu Bharati‖ (I will not sell my work to the Kings, who are minions before you, the Lord). He went on to say, though I am a farmer, I will not sell my work to the kings to feed myself. Dhoorjati, one of the ‗Prabhanda poets‖ of the 16th Century without any inhibitions expressed his resentment and dislike to the kings. In his Kaalahastheeswara sathakam, he says… ―rajul matthul, vari seva naraka prayam‖ (kings are strong-headed and service to them is hell.) Vemana, the people‘s poet, in his shatakas, exposed the societies flaws and showed resistance towards the system.

    Connections: A Journal of Language, Media and Culture Laughing About Caste An analysis of how caste considerations find representation in the genre of English stand- up comedy on the internet in India Shreyashi Ganguly1 1 Department of Sociology, University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The literature on humour in India has largely evaded the question of how humour intersects with caste stratification. Not much has been written about humour’s potential to discriminate against certain caste groups of the lower social order. Similarly, the traditional media in India has been silent about the issue of caste following which, social media has emerged as the ‘counter publics’ where caste identity can be collectively and freely expressed. Taking the now flourishing brand of English stand-up comedy on the Internet in India as an entry point, this study investigates if the symbolic articulation of caste identities is at all made possible in this genre. Using a combination of discourse analysis and social media analysis, to examine the jokes produced in stand-up shows, in this paper I try to gauge how frequently, and in what ways, caste finds mention in these performances on the Internet. I find that caste identity, and the associated discrimination, are hardly evoked in the comedians’ discourse. And when spoken about, they are often done so in a disparaging light. I conclude this paper by illuminating the ways in which this disparaging humour bolsters caste discrimination, sustains stereotypes and, in the process, conditions the normalized exclusion of lower-caste groupings from the public sphere.

College, University of Lucknow, Lucknow-226020 Abstract The Dalit Movement began as a protest movement in India. The Dalits (formerly correctly known as "Untouchables") with the "Other Backward Castes" are the majority of the Indian population. The word "Dalit" means "crushed" or "Crushed into a mass”. The Dalits, also called as Atisudra, Panchama or Outcasts, at present constitute one of the most depressed and marginalized sections of Indian society. Socio-cultural exclusion, economic deprivation and political exploitation of centuries made them to break out of such kinds of age-old prejudices. Hence, they began to protest with the help of literatures, or forming organization, which came to be recognized as the Dalit Movement. This paper is an attempt to bring forth the various aspects of Dalit’s lives that led to the movement, in the radiance of Dalit literatures and their current populations, positions and constitutional remedies in the society. As untouchability was outlawed under the Constitution of the Republic of India, when that Constitution was adopted in 1951, and as a policy was put in place of reserving a few seats for Dalits in government schools, hospitals, bureaucratic jobs, and so on, the fortunes of some Dalits improved to the point that there is now a so-caled "Creamy layer" among Dalits. The existence of this "Creamy layer" along with the existence of what one may call a "Dry layer" among other castes, makes many Indians think that the problem of untouchability and caste-discrimination has been resolved and that nothing further needs to be done in fact, many are seeking even to abolish the reservations that exist for Dalits.

    Caste or Colony?: Indianizing Race in the United States* DANIEL IMMERWAHR August 2006 ACCEPTED FOR PUBLICATION IN MODERN INTELLECTUAL HISTORY PLEASE DO NOT CITE OR QUOTE WITHOUT PERMISSION OF AUTHOR Abstract: Since the 1830s, thinkers in both the United States and India have sought to establish analogies between their respective countries. Although many have felt the U.S. black experience to have obvious parallels in India, there has been a fundamental disagreement about whether being black is comparable to being colonized or to being untouch- able. By examining these two competing visions, this essay introduces new topics to the study of black internationalism, including the caste school of race relations, B. R. Ambedkar’s anti-caste movement, and the changing significance of India for Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1999, UNESCO published a short book, intended for a general audience, comparing the ca- reers of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Mohandas K. Gandhi and noting the obvious parallels in their use of nonviolence. Four years later, the Motilal Bhimraj Charity Trust put out a similar book, also comparing black politics to Indian politics, although with one major difference. Instead of casting Gandhi as the Indian analogue to King, as UNESCO had done, it cast B. R. Ambedkar, a leader of un- touchables and one of Gandhi’s most formidable opponents.1 The difference is not trivial. Gandhi, the hero of the first book, stands as the implicit villain of the second, for Ambedkar believed that the greatest obstacle to the full flourishing of untouchables was the Mahatma himself. The irrecon- cilability of the two books, each affable enough when taken on its own, is a consequence of, and an emblem for, the irreconcilability of two competing visions of how blacks in the U.S.
