Primate Report 65 (2003).Pdf Foreword Foreword The present 65th issue of Primate Report was edited to provide more detailed informa- tion on certain polyspecific associations of primates in captivity, a complex subject, al- ready presented in Primate Report 64, which focused on Zoos in Germany. Here, three international scientific articles are presented, describing special mixed species exhibits with primates involved in greater detail. Two of these articles present long-term experiences made in the Safaripark Beekse Bergen (baboons and elephants) and Belfast Zoo (several Callitrichid species), both also referring to data from the wild. The third article presents an experimental study on the consequences of mixing Howler monkeys and Tamarins to selected behavioural aspects under semi-free conditions in Panama. A short introduction to the general background of the studies on mixed species exhib- its, presented in Primate Report issue 64, and the present issue of Primate Report, is given here again. We would like to thank the authors of the following articles for their contributions, which provide valuable information on a subject that still needs further studies in the wild and is becomming increasingly important for the management of animals in captivity. During the evolution of Zoos, from the mere presentation of animal collections, sepa- rately exhibited in single species cages, to the presentation of exhibits, set up to resem- ble natural habitats, the idea of mixing different species in the same enclosure became increasingly important. Traditionally, many Zoos have considerable experience in the combination of numer- ous fish- reptile- and bird species in aquariums, reptile gardens or flight cages, but the concept of mixing two or more mammal species is relatively young. To a certain degree, the underlying reasons can be seen in the potential risks, technical demands and prob- lems, that can be caused by establishing a new association of mammals in captivity. Nevertheless, as polyspecific associations can be regularly observed in many sym- patric animals including mammals in the wild, the concept of mixed species exhibits rep- resents an important and promising measure to approximate natural conditions in captiv- ity. Among vertebrates, stable polyspecific association are quite common and can be ob- served regularly in wild fish, birds, ungulates and primates (BERTRAM, 1978; TER- BORGH, 1990; BUCHANAN-SMITH, 1990). The ultimate causes of this phenomenon can be seen in behavioural strategies to avoid predators and to optimise foraging ("Safety in numbers": TERBORGH, 1990; MORSE, 1970; GADDIS, 1980; POWELL, 1985; MUNN, 1986). Although not every species involved in a certain polyspecific asso- ciation gains advantages equal in quantity or quality, the overall benefits of living in a mixed flock have to outweigh the potential costs for each individual, as polyspecific asso- ciations are evolutionary evolved strategies. Many primate species are known to regularly form long term polyspecific associa- tions in the wild (STRUHSAKER, 1981; POOK and POOK, 1982; GAUTIER-HION, 1988; HEYMANN, 1990). These associations can be formed within the taxonomic family or subfamily (e.g. Cebidae, Cercopithecidae, Callitrichinae) or between different taxo- nomic orders (e.g. primates & ungulates). Among Callitrichids (subfam.: Callitrichinae), the forming of polyspecific associations is already known as an integral part of their biol- ogy (HEYMANN and BUCHANAN-SMITH, 2000). Against this background, polyspecific associations in captivity can be seen as a spe- cial enrichment, which leads to a more complex and thus more natural environment (HARDIE, 1996; HEYMANN et al., 1996), having positive effects for animals and visitors of these exhibits. The possibility of exhibiting mammals of different species or combining mammals with bird or reptile species within the same enclosure can have several benefits on differ- ent levels. These benefits involve pure practical aspects, like alleviating cage space problems, educational aspect for the public (as long as the association considers the zoogeographic distribution of the species involved) and last but not least, aspects of be- havioural and social enrichment for the animals, due to interspecific or intensified intraspecific interactions. Ziegler: Background of the Study The practical advantages of mixed species exhibits has become more and more im- portant during the last decades, as Zoos have become increasingly involved in Euro- pean and International breeding programs for an increasing number of species that are critically endangered in their natural habitats. While the number of these species and the demand for breeding programs in captivity increases, space for suitable exhibits in Zoos is limited. Mixed species exhibits can alleviate this problem, as already available enclo- sures can serve to keep two or more species at a time without disadvantages for any of the species involved. On the contrary, the association of different species in mixed exhib- its can often represent an environmental enrichment for the individuals involved and this holds true especially for primates. In general polyspecific associations, as an additional stimulus in captivity, can positively influence individual behavioural patterns and time budgets in terms of interspecific and intensified intraspecific interactions. The stimulation of such interactive behavioural patterns can be an important factor for the wellbeing of the animals (e.g. to avoid stereotypic behaviours), as time budgets for foraging and pred- ator avoidance are drastically reduced in captivity. This study was set up to support the exchange of expertise in establishing and main- taining mixed species exhibits in Zoos and other animal keeping facilities of Germany and abroad, as well as to promote the outstanding value of this concept for future animal keeping and - exhibition facilities. 4 Primate Report 65, January 2003 R. Key words: hamadryas baboon, African elephant, mixed-species exhibit, interspe- cific interactions, environmental enrichment, behavioural enrichment, cross-conta- mination Abstract Since 1994, hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) and African ele- phants (Loxodonta africana) are housed together in a 1.3 ha outdoor enclosure dur- ing daytime in Safari Beekse Bergen, the Netherlands. A detailed description and evaluation of the success of this mixed-species exhibit is presented. The only prob- lem associated with the mixing of species was a one-off cross-contamination with sal- monella. However if health of both species is closely monitored, the potential threat of cross-contamination cannot be considered as a major problem. Especially if this problem is weighed against the numerous advantages of the mixed exhibit: large en- closure for both species, environmental enrichment through frequent direct and in- direct interspecific interactions, behavioural enrichment through promotion of spe- cies-specific behaviour and the development of special behaviour, the almost com- plete absence of stereotypic behaviour in both species and finally more educational and scientifically interesting exhibits. Introduction Mixed-species exhibits with mammals are more and more common in zoos. Most of the time primates, ungulates and/or birds are involved in these associations (THOMAS and MARUSKA, 1996). Baboons have been used frequently in successful mixed-species exhibits with ungulates, hyraxes and mongooses (CROTTY, 1981; THOMAS and MARUSKA, 1996). Recent examples include: gelada baboons (Thero- pithecus gelada), barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia) and rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) in Wilhelma Zoologisch-Botanischer Garten in Stuttgart, Germany; hama- dryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) and barbary sheep in Amersfoort, the Netherlands; hamadryas baboons and Nubian ibex (Capra ibex nubiana) at Tier- park Hellabrunn in München, Germany; hybrid baboons (Papio hamadryas hama- dryas x Papio hamadryas anubis), nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) and zebra (Equus burchelli) in Knowsley Safari Park, U.K. Elephants are generally kept in separate enclosures, but can successfully be combined with other species if the latter have safe areas to get away from the elephants (STEVENSON, in press). However most experiments are recent and have been restricted to mixing elephants and ungulates: African elephants (Loxodonta africana), common elands (Taurotragus oryx) and oryx (Oryx gazella) in Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno, Spain; Afri- can elephants, African buffalo (Syncerus caffer), ostrich (Struthio camelus), blesbok Primate Report 65, January 2003 5 R. Species can differ in the body targets that are bitten and the tactics used to attack and defend those targets. However, even closely related species that attack and defend the same body target using the same tactics can differ markedly in how much the competitiveness of such interactions is mitigated by cooperation. A degree of cooperation is necessary to ensure that some turn-taking between the roles of attacker and defender occurs, as this is critical in preventing play fighting from escalating into serious fighting. In the present study, the dyadic play fighting of captive troops of 4 closely related species of Old World monkeys, 2 each from 2 genera of Papio and Mandrillus, was analyzed. All 4 species have a comparable social organization, are large bodied with considerable sexual dimorphism, and are mostly terrestrial. In all species, the target of biting is the same – the area encompassing the upper arm, shoulder, and side of the neck – and they have the same tactics of attack and defense. However, the Papio species exhibit more cooperation in their play than do the Mandrillus species, with the former using tactics that make biting easier to attain and that facilitate close bodily contact.

Habitat loss and destruction are often considered to be the most serious threat to many tropical primate populations because of agricultural expansion, livestock grazing, logging, and human settlement (Cowlishaw and Dunbar, 2000). Deforestation and forest fragmentation have marched together with the expansion of agricultural frontiers, resulting in both habitat loss and subdivision of the remaining habitat (Michalski and Peres, 2005). This forest degradation results in reduction in size or fragmentation of the original forest habitat (Fahrig, 2003). Females were found to be more promiscuous than in wild populations, however, presumably because of the confounding effect that the high number of simultaneously cycling females had on RM herding (Chapter 1). Abstract: Baboons are the type of monkey that are found in African forests and the Arabians. There are five species of baboons worldwide which are distributed in different habitats such as tropical rainforests, savannas, open woodlands and semi-arid areas. A close observation made on baboons at the Yankari Game Reserve(YGR), showed that they feed on various foods which are the reason they are known as pests as well as they are scavengers on elephant's dung. Apart from poaching activity by humans, baboons at YGR are also threatened by loss of habitat due to regular predatory activity by a lion (Pathera leo) in the reserve on the baboons. Out of the five species, only one species (Papio anubis) are found in the large population at the Yankari Game Reserve. This increase in the population of the olive baboons at the YGR has become a source of concern to tourists and researchers who visit the reserve. Due to frequent visits by people to the reserve, the baboons has developed a high level of intellectualism as well as tricks to overcome the dominance by humans encroaching their habitat. Some of these behaviours are groupings, pretence, and acrobatics.

Pillsworth, Department of Anthropology Fall, 2015 ABSTRACT Long-term studies of animal ranging ecology are critical to understanding how animals utilize their habitat across space and time. Although gelada monkeys (Theropithecus gelada) inhabit an unusual, high altitude habitat that presents unique ecological challenges, no long-term studies of their ranging behavior have been conducted. To close this gap, I investigated the daily path length (DPL), annual home ranges (95%), and annual core areas (50%) of a band of ~220 wild gelada monkeys at Guassa, Ethiopia, from January 2007 to December 2011 (for total of n = 785 full-day follows). I estimated annual home ranges and core area using the fixed kernel reference (FK REF) and smoothed cross-validation (FK SCV) bandwidths, and the minimum convex polygon (MCP) method. Both annual home range (MCP - 2007: 5.9 km2; 2008: 8.6 km2; 2009: 9.2 km2; 2010: 11.5 km2; 2011: 11.6 km2) and core area increased over the 5-year study period. The MCP and FK REF generated broadly consistent, though slightly larger estimates that contained areas in which the geladas were never observed. All three methods omitted one to 19 sleeping sites from the home range depending on the year.
