I hope you enjoy your time here today, taking away a great memory and a good story to share with others. We love to hear from audience members, teachers, children, artists, and others who are impacted by their experience with TPAC.

What’s your story? How has TPAC impacted you over the years? Have you been swept away by what you’ve seen on stage? I invite you to share your experiences with us as we begin to collect and document stories in a new way. We are planning to launch a series — which will include short videos — to put faces on the diverse voices of TPAC.

Some of my favorite stories are told by educators and teaching artists, who see how our educational programs transform children. Just recently, one shared a success story about a boy with autism whose classroom response and interaction dramatically increased through arts activities. Especially with the changes in Tennessee

education standards, we’re thrilled to hear how TPAC Education is Mimosa Arts Photos by making a difference to teachers who are integrating subjects across curriculum with our methods of hands-on, project-based learning.

We also love stories about the impact of seeds sown in childhood. In 1983, Lattie Brown, a high school student, attended The Glass Menagerie, the very first TPAC Education performance. After working professionally as an actress, she now manages TPAC’s The Country Music Association program for pre-school children, where her many accomplishments (CMA) Foundation has awarded have included producing the album Give Yourself A High Five, an $18,000 grant to Disney recipient of an esteemed Gold Award from Parents’ Choice. “Theatre is very important for children at a young age — to be exposed to it and to participate. Look at it from the point of how it helps their reading and broadens their educational background. A Tuesday night shortly before Christmas 1956. Four legends — Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley — gathered at the Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee, where they’d launched their careers. Word soon leaked out of an impromptu jam session. A newspaper man who was there wrote, “This quartet could sell a million.” Soon, they were dubbed the . This was their only performance, a cultural flash- point that caught rock ‘n’ roll at the moment of creation. Sun Records owner Sam Phillips discovered and produced the Million Dollar Quartet. That’s why he, together with Presley and Lewis, were among the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame’s charter inductees. Perkins and Cash soon joined them. Unlike other producers at that time, Phillips took an active role in recording, encouraging and coaxing his young, untested artists to reach deep within themselves. He began by recording blues singers like B.B. King and Ike Turner. Later on, he was the first to sign and Charlie Rich. In his rudimentary, one-room studio, Phillips looked for innovation, not imitation. The music he recorded transformed the cultural landscape of the twentieth century, and its reverberations are still felt today.

“ If Ted Welch had lived to be 110 years of age, his passing would still be considered premature. He was a unique human being, distinguishing himself in his every endeavor. I continue to cherish his friendship and the example of responsibility and caring he was in every phase of his life.” – Governor Winfield Dunn

Ted Welch and Tim McGraw received the Applause Award in 2011 at TPAC Gala from Kathleen O’Brien, president and chief executive officer of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. On left, Ted and his wife Colleen Conway-Welch celebrated his award. Colleen served on TPAC’s board of directors and co-chaired the 25th anniversary Gala in 2005.

Without Ted Welch there may not have been a Tennessee Performing Arts Center. As Martha Rivers Ingram recalls the story of her meeting with him in the early days of the movement to establish TPAC, “Ted Welch, as Commissioner of Finance and Administration, was in the office with Governor Winfield Dunn when Anne Wilson, Annette Eskind and I came calling back in 1972. Anne had arranged the meeting because her husband, Pat Wilson, had been Dunn’s chief fundraiser for his recently successful campaign for Tennessee’s highest office. Both Governor Dunn and Ted Welch were very polite to us – but I know from subsequent conversations they thought we would never follow through because of their requirement that we raise $3.5 million for endowment from the private sector. We raised $5.5 million and they were amazed. To his credit, Ted told the story to us after the TPAC opening.” After that first meeting, Ted continued to diplomatically guide the state funding process. His idea for the private endowment has made an annual contribution to TPAC’s budget for over 33 years. Those who knew Ted, and appreciated his easy-going manner of speech and dry sense of humor, will enjoy this quote from him, a comment he made when presented with the Applause Award, TPAC’s highest honor. “I have not had anyone ever tell me that TPAC was a gross waste. It’s been a wonderful facility, from my perspective… The people of Tennessee are proud of it. We faced some challenges as we went along, but not anything that we could not overcome,” he said. Throughout his life, Ted Welch was a patron and supporter of multiple arts organizations in Nashville and Tennessee. He was well known for his leadership within the Republican Party, including roles as the Finance Chairman for the Presidential Election Campaigns of Ronald Reagan, George Bush, John Connally, Bob Dole, and Howard Baker. An investor in real estate and developer of office buildings, he was Chairman and CEO of Eagle Communications, Inc. from 1993 until he sold the company in 2001. His corporate board seats included First Bank and National Health Investors Corporation. He served as treasurer of the board for the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and the Arts and Business Council of Greater Nashville, among his other contributions to the community. The TPAC board of directors and staff are grateful to Ted and Colleen for the starring roles they played here and throughout the city and state. They have been enthusiastic supporters, inspirational leaders, and dear friends. With love and admiration, we express sincere sympathy to the Welch family. He will be deeply missed.

War Horse T he National Theater 2007. “ Oh, what a night!” My wife and I were in London with the company of Jersey Boys and I asked our cast to recommend some good new shows. Virtually all of them said War Horse, of course! Not an intentional rhyme, but literally what they said in unison and in tune. The recommendation from serious theater people left me intrigued. Now, with my expectations high, the cynic in me expected to be somewhat let down. So, I prepared myself to be gracious in answer to the inevitable question, “Did you like it, mate?” Well, being gracious was not necessary nor was a polite, “Nice bit of theater.” I was absolutely intrigued, infatuated, engrossed, and in love with this show. Intelligent, artistic, and based on a true story, it is one of those shows that transforms you into its world. Life-size puppetry (likened to Disney’s The Lion King), combined with the gracefulness of ballet and a powerful story is what this piece of theater is all about. The artists operating the horses are just that… artists. After ten minutes, they virtually disappear before your eyes but are, in reality, still ever present… amazing stuff. No matter how much I tried to understand how they accomplished this feat, I found myself seeing them as living, breathing horses on that stage. I was told that the operators lived with horses for months to capture their mannerisms and feelings, if you will. The story is a bit heavy and by my count, a “3 tissue” production, but overall, joyous and chilling. I told my wife, Judy, they should have named the horse “Rocky.” I shouldn’t give this away, but for those of you who love horses, it does have a happy ending. As for the macho guys seeing this theater piece, you WILL want to have at least one tissue nearby. Your lady will love you for that… At least mine did. I’m thrilled TPAC decided to bring this work to Nashville… thank you, Kathleen. Enjoy the ride… You’re in for a memorable evening of brilliance.
