Fighting for positions, high pace and tough riders Ford epic Israel – stage 2 summary Following a rough first stage, the second day took the riders to the queen stage of Ford Epic Israel 2018. 98 km with 2300m of climbing in a beautiful loop around the Jerusalem hills. The day started with a neutral start from the Kibutz Maaleh Hachamisha, near Jerusalem. The huge peloton that included the one-day racers today started to roll down to Abu Gosh village. After controlled 4 km, the race started and the fights for position in the front, in an effort to try to close gaps from yesterday’s stage. After crossing under route 1 towards Ein Rafa village, they entered a short single track towards Keasalon creek. While the leading group is dictating a high pace, but still riding closely together. First to attack were the Canadian couple, Esperance and Gange. They opened a gap of close to a minute before they were caught by the chech couple, Kulhavi and Ulman in the next uphill section towards towards Tzur Hadasa. At this stage the 2 leading duos had a lead of about 2 mins, chased by 5 couples, including the GC leaders, Eger and Brandle from Germany and Ragl and Markt from Austria (only 8 seconds separates them in the overall GC). Following the next uphill to Bar Giora, a feeding zone sponsored by the Israel Cycling Academy continental pro road team which attracted cheering crowd of local riders. The leaders continued at a high pace towards the Stalactite cave and thru the Sorek quarry into the third feeding zone near Eshtaol, 76 km from the start. In the penultimate climb in Neve Ilan creek, Kulhavi and Ulman attacked Esperance and Gange and managed to brake away from them. Behind them, the Hungarian couple, Atila and Dina broke away from the chasing group of the GC leaders from Germany and Austria. Kulhavi and Ulmann started the last climb of the day in the lead which was maintained until the finish. They crossed the line in the race village in an amazing time of 03:51:57. Second, came in the Hungarians, Attila and Dina at 03:53:43 and in third, the race leaders from yesterday, Eger and Brandl at 03:54:04, bridging a gap of over a minutes on the Hungarians in the last climb of the day in Yitleh creek. Overall GC after stage 2: 1. George Egger/ Maximillian bradl 07:26:24.27 2. Karl Markt / Gregor Raggl 07:29:11.49 3. Attila Valter/ Dina Marton 07:30:35.23 In summary, on paper it was a tougher stage than yesterday, but the composition of downhills and uphills sections made it easier than the first stage. In the Women category, the dutch/Hungarian couple of Anne Terpstra and Barbara Benko were leading early on together with Cronogorac from Serbia and Michels from Belgium. They reached the first feed zone together next to riders from the men category. A flat tire after the feed zone to Crnogorac left them behind Terpstra and Benko who crossed the finish line first at 04:40:50 min, 8 min before Crnogorac/Michels at 04:48:35. In third place came in Noyman from Israel with Daubermann from Germany at 04:58:13. Esther Suss finished the stage by herself following a crash of her partner Tazreiter who injured her Shoulder and was taken to hospital. Women GC after stage 2: .1 Benko Brbara/ Terpstra Anne 08:51:29.44 .2 Momtambault Cindy/ Moureo Jaqeline 09:43:33.14 .3 Noyman Naama/ Daubermann Antonia 09:46:09.43 The close battle in the masters category continued today. 5 couples were riding close together from the start and almost to the finish line. Schiler and Haklay from Israel were leading early on, but a mechanical problem stopped them and caused them to lose a few mins. The Belgians Planckaet and Tollenaere took the lead followed by Diverolli and Dahan from Israel and Cohen and Obrein, both from Israel. A bit behind them were Bicshof and Kaufmann from Switzerland, who later on passed Cohen/Obrein. A mechanical problem in Planckaet’s pedal slowed the leaders, but they managed to stay first till the finish with a time of 04:51:23, followed by Diverolli and Dahan at 04:52:30 only a min behind them. 8 min later Bicshof and Kaufmann came in at 5:00:14. 4th and 5th place were determined by a finish sprint with Schiller/Haklay beating Cohen/Obrein on the line. Masters GC after stage 2: 1. Haim Dahan/ Angelo Diverolli 09:18:35.97 2. Tollenaere Wim/ Planckaert Hans09:20:15.78 3. Bischof Christof/ Kaufmann Thoms09:30:59.53 In the Mixed category, Omer Shapira, Israel Women road champion and Guy Sagiv, the leading rider of Israel Cycling Academy proved to be made of champions material. The road riders demonstrated a strong and consistent ride throughout the stage with a great finishing time of 04:35:15 min. Second were Rotem Gafinovitz and Tom Itzhaki at 05:22:33 and third Yelena Yistarov and Lior Boyum at 05:45:01. Mixed GC after stage 2: 1. Omer Shapira/ Guy Sagiv 08:49:06.53 2. Rotem Gafinovitz/ Tom Itzhaki 07:04.94 3. Trepte Evelyne/ Trepte Michael11:02:19.17 In the Grand Masters category, Gil Kashi and Israel Chen maintained their first place with a time of 05:07:50, followed by Issy Zimmerman from England and David De Lima from South Africa at 05:09:52. Nir Israeli/Nitzan Hendler 10:39:00.70 Ford Epic Israel powered by Trek is an annual MTB stage race in it’s 6th edition was initiated as a memorial for Giora Tzachor. It’s the most significant bike race in Israel and serves as a flagship cycling event in Israel. Over the last few years it became an international cycling event with a vision to become a leading world cycling race. This year, over 130 riders from 25 countries will participate. A record number of cyclists and bike tourists who will become ambassadors for Israel in practice. The 3 racing days in the unique sceneries of the Jerusalem hills, exposes the riders to a high level of cycling professionalism and promotes the participants and their friends and families to this great sports culture.
