Fighting for Positions, High Pace and Tough Riders Ford Epic Israel – Stage 2 Summary Fighting for positions, high pace and tough riders Ford epic Israel – stage 2 summary Following a rough first stage, the second day took the riders to the queen stage of Ford Epic Israel 2018. 98 km with 2300m of climbing in a beautiful loop around the Jerusalem hills. The day started with a neutral start from the Kibutz Maaleh Hachamisha, near Jerusalem. The huge peloton that included the one-day racers today started to roll down to Abu Gosh village. After controlled 4 km, the race started and the fights for position in the front, in an effort to try to close gaps from yesterday’s stage. After crossing under route 1 towards Ein Rafa village, they entered a short single track towards Keasalon creek. While the leading group is dictating a high pace, but still riding closely together. First to attack were the Canadian couple, Esperance and Gange. They opened a gap of close to a minute before they were caught by the chech couple, Kulhavi and Ulman in the next uphill section towards towards Tzur Hadasa. At this stage the 2 leading duos had a lead of about 2 mins, chased by 5 couples, including the GC leaders, Eger and Brandle from Germany and Ragl and Markt from Austria (only 8 seconds separates them in the overall GC). Following the next uphill to Bar Giora, a feeding zone sponsored by the Israel Cycling Academy continental pro road team which attracted cheering crowd of local riders. The leaders continued at a high pace towards the Stalactite cave and thru the Sorek quarry into the third feeding zone near Eshtaol, 76 km from the start. In the penultimate climb in Neve Ilan creek, Kulhavi and Ulman attacked Esperance and Gange and managed to brake away from them. Behind them, the Hungarian couple, Atila and Dina broke away from the chasing group of the GC leaders from Germany and Austria. Kulhavi and Ulmann started the last climb of the day in the lead which was maintained until the finish. They crossed the line in the race village in an amazing time of 03:51:57. Second, came in the Hungarians, Attila and Dina at 03:53:43 and in third, the race leaders from yesterday, Eger and Brandl at 03:54:04, bridging a gap of over a minutes on the Hungarians in the last climb of the day in Yitleh creek. Overall GC after stage 2: 1. George Egger/ Maximillian bradl 07:26:24.27 2. Karl Markt / Gregor Raggl 07:29:11.49 3. Attila Valter/ Dina Marton 07:30:35.23 In summary, on paper it was a tougher stage than yesterday, but the composition of downhills and uphills sections made it easier than the first stage. In the Women category, the dutch/Hungarian couple of Anne Terpstra and Barbara Benko were leading early on together with Cronogorac from Serbia and Michels from Belgium. They reached the first feed zone together next to riders from the men category. A flat tire after the feed zone to Crnogorac left them behind Terpstra and Benko who crossed the finish line first at 04:40:50 min, 8 min before Crnogorac/Michels at 04:48:35. In third place came in Noyman from Israel with Daubermann from Germany at 04:58:13. Esther Suss finished the stage by herself following a crash of her partner Tazreiter who injured her Shoulder and was taken to hospital. Women GC after stage 2: .1 Benko Brbara/ Terpstra Anne 08:51:29.44 .2 Momtambault Cindy/ Moureo Jaqeline 09:43:33.14 .3 Noyman Naama/ Daubermann Antonia 09:46:09.43 The close battle in the masters category continued today. 5 couples were riding close together from the start and almost to the finish line. Schiler and Haklay from Israel were leading early on, but a mechanical problem stopped them and caused them to lose a few mins. The Belgians Planckaet and Tollenaere took the lead followed by Diverolli and Dahan from Israel and Cohen and Obrein, both from Israel. A bit behind them were Bicshof and Kaufmann from Switzerland, who later on passed Cohen/Obrein. A mechanical problem in Planckaet’s pedal slowed the leaders, but they managed to stay first till the finish with a time of 04:51:23, followed by Diverolli and Dahan at 04:52:30 only a min behind them. 8 min later Bicshof and Kaufmann came in at 5:00:14. 4th and 5th place were determined by a finish sprint with Schiller/Haklay beating Cohen/Obrein on the line. Masters GC after stage 2: 1. Haim Dahan/ Angelo Diverolli 09:18:35.97 2. Tollenaere Wim/ Planckaert Hans09:20:15.78 3. Bischof Christof/ Kaufmann Thoms09:30:59.53 In the Mixed category, Omer Shapira, Israel Women road champion and Guy Sagiv, the leading rider of Israel Cycling Academy proved to be made of champions material. The road riders demonstrated a strong and consistent ride throughout the stage with a great finishing time of 04:35:15 min. Second were Rotem Gafinovitz and Tom Itzhaki at 05:22:33 and third Yelena Yistarov and Lior Boyum at 05:45:01. Mixed GC after stage 2: 1. Omer Shapira/ Guy Sagiv 08:49:06.53 2. Rotem Gafinovitz/ Tom Itzhaki 07:04.94 3. Trepte Evelyne/ Trepte Michael11:02:19.17 In the Grand Masters category, Gil Kashi and Israel Chen maintained their first place with a time of 05:07:50, followed by Issy Zimmerman from England and David De Lima from South Africa at 05:09:52. Nir Israeli and Nitzan Handler closed the first three with a time of 05:29:51 min. Grand Masters GC after stage 2: 1. Gil Kashi/Israel Chen09:49:06.74 2. Zimmerman Issy/ De Lima David10:04:31.51 3. Nir Israeli/Nitzan Hendler 10:39:00.70 Ford Epic Israel powered by Trek is an annual MTB stage race in it’s 6th edition was initiated as a memorial for Giora Tzachor. It’s the most significant bike race in Israel and serves as a flagship cycling event in Israel. Over the last few years it became an international cycling event with a vision to become a leading world cycling race. This year, over 130 riders from 25 countries will participate. A record number of cyclists and bike tourists who will become ambassadors for Israel in practice. The 3 racing days in the unique sceneries of the Jerusalem hills, exposes the riders to a high level of cycling professionalism and promotes the participants and their friends and families to this great sports culture.     ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

    Palestinian Internally Displaced Persons inside Israel: Challenging the Solid Structures Nihad Bokae’e February 2003 Badil Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights PO Box 728 Bethlehem, Palestine [email protected] www.badil.org Socio-historical Overview Internally displaced Palestinians inside Israel are part of the larger Palestinian refugee population that was displaced/expelled from their villages and homes during the 1948 conflict and war in Palestine (i.e., al-Nakba). Most of the refugees were displaced to the Arab states and the Palestinian territories that did not fall under Israeli control (i.e., the West Bank and Gaza Strip). At the end of the war, some 150,000 Palestinians remained in the areas of Palestine that became the state of Israel. This included approximately 30- 40,000 Palestinians who were also displaced during the war. Like the approximately 800,000 Palestinian refugees who were displaced/expelled beyond the borders of the new state, Israel refused to allow internally displaced Palestinians (IDPs) to return to their homes and villages. Displacement did not end with the 1948 war. In the years following the establishment of Israel, internally displaced Palestinians, a small number of refugees who had returned spontaneously to their villages, and Palestinians who had not been displaced during the war were expelled for security and other reasons. Israeli officials also carried out forced transfer of Palestinians from one village to another within the borders of the state in order to facilitate colonization of these areas. This included, for example, Palestinians from the villages of Iqrit, Bir’am, al-Ghabsiyya, Krad al-Baqqarah and Krad al- Ghannamah.

CHESNUT Institute of Archaeology Andrews University Berrien Springs, MI 49104 [email protected] 1 INTRODUCTION This paper will examine the Israelite expansion process that took place in the Iron Age II (with background from the Iron I), with a focus on the biblical text. It will not look at the arrival of the Israelites into the land because this topic is much too complicated and nuanced to be discussed succinctly here. Instead, the focus will be placed on what the biblical account has to say about the Israelite settlement in and around the Chalk Moat and the five cities located therein (Zorah, Eshtaol, Zanoah, Adullam, and Keilah), an area of great importance for Israelite/ Philistine conflict (fig. 1). The dating of these different biblical passages will also be analyzed only in brief, since the majority opinion dates all these passages to post-Iron Age II. Such dating will not be a hindrance to the purpose of this paper because it can be assumed that the passages preserve historically accurate details about this time period. Conclusions concerning the historical geographical background of Israelite movement during this period will be based on the passages analyzed. DEFINING THE CHALK MOAT The Chalk Moat is a geological formation separating the Hill Country of Judah from the Shephelah and the Philistine Coastal Plain. George Adam Smith was the first to write about this formation calling it “the great fosse, that has been planted along the ramparts of Judea”1. The Chalk Moat is an area of Senonian chalk forming a north-south line of demarcation between the Cenomanian limestone to the east and the softer Eocene limestone to the west.

    DANGEROUS GAMES OF THE HEART! (Judges 16:4-14) Doesn’t it come so sudden! … Judges 16:4 And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. Previously, he been declaring his undying love to the woman he had married from Timnath (… that he hadn’t completely!), and now he has ‘fallen head over heels’ for another one! … Didn’t he make life awful complicated for himself! He was looking for love in all the wrong places. Before we see where he is now, let’s remind ourselves where he has been. At the very beginning, 13:25 the spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol, - he was doing the Lord’s work as the judge of Israel. He started off fine, but he became waylaid when he happened to go outside the localities of Zorah and Eshtaol and he made his way into the town of Timnath, - not too far, only about five miles down the road from his hometown of Zorah. After experiencing the trauma of a sham marriage, his frustration took him to Ashkelon, - about twenty-three miles from Timnath, - where he slew thirty of their men. He then returned the twenty-three miles or so to Timnath to consummate his marriage with his wife … only to find she had been given to someone else. He reeked his revenge by catching three hundred foxes, tying them in pairs tail-to-tail, fixing a torch to each pair and letting them loose in the grain fields of the Philistines.

  • Activity Report Year 2014-Yedidut Zahala
    Dear all, In the following pamphlet, I am pleased to present the activities conducted under the auspices of the "Yedidut Zahala" project, serving 1,300 at-risk Israeli youths in approximately 100 groups, spread from Eilat in the south to Akko in the north. For three consecutive years, our volunteers meet on a weekly basis with the youth groups they accompany and guide. Together, they take part in diverse activities, including discussions about values, such as tolerance, friendship and leadership, learn about Israeli history, deliberate about current events, and participate in community service. Furthermore, the groups enjoy team-bonding and entertainment events, as well as visit IDF bases, heritage sites, museums and attend plays. Every year, all the groups come together for a special Activity Day, marking the apex of our annual program. Additionally, every year, a delegation of Yedidut Zahala members travels to Poland to grasp the extermination camps first-hand, in a journey that strengthens both their Israeli and moral identities. In this report, you will find pictures and impressions from the activities of Yedidut Zahala groups over the past few years. The programs are quite extensive – we had no choice to display it all "in a nutshell"… Thank you to the partners and contributors who help us achieve our dreams.
