It was founded by ZachariahSales, a lumberman from Wisconsin, who arrived via wagon train in 1865. The small community of Slabtown soon grew up around the sawmill. In 1883, the town was named

The Gallatin River Island is located at an average elevation of 4,912 feet above sea level. The entire property is generally level.

The Gallatin Valley enjoys a mild climate with over 300 days a year with sunshine. July and August are the warmest months, with high temperatures averaging in the low 80s, and night time lows in the 50s. January is typically the coldest month, with daily highs in the mid 30s. The Bozeman area sees on average over 18 inches of precipitation per year, with the majority of that coming in April, May and June.

Average annual snowfall is around 85 inches, mostly up against the mountains on the southwest side of town. The property will see less than half that amount of snowfall. Snow removal is periodically needed but is rarely a significant issue.
