he magazine of St Michael’s Institution, T“The Michaelian” is 65 years old this year. The first magazine was published in 1948 during the directorship of Brother Patrick O’ Donovan. He was the Brother Director in St Michael’s from June 1938 to March 1948. He stood out in Michaelian history as an educationist par excellence who succeeded in putting St Michael’s in the top rank of schools. He introduced science teaching and was responsible for increased interest and efficiency in the classroom and extra-curricular activities. Among the many significant seeds sown during the Patrician era were the setting up of Chinese language classes, the Literary and Debating Society, the Thrift Society, the School Broadcasting Society and the Michaelian magazine. He was also responsible for the establishment of the De La Salle School in Kampar. This year we pay tribute to “The Michaelian”, being showcased on the front cover, all the past issues of the magazines we treasure and value. After a period of more than six decades, “The Michaelian” is still going strong and continues its quest to document the historic, significant and memorable events dear to all.

Sekian, terima kasih.

Transformasi Pendidikan Memenuhi Aspirasi Negara

TAN SRI ABD GHAFAR B. MAHMUD Ketua Pengarah Pendidikan Malaysia

Sekian, terima kasih.

HAJI MARAZLEN @ MAR AZLAN B. AMRAN, AMP, PPT Pegawai Pendidikan Daerah Kinta Utara

12 Dear Michaelians and the whole community of SMI, Greetings of Peace! I greet you warmly especially on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of your annual magazine, “THE MICHAELIAN”! St. Michael’s Institution is now more than a century old! You join many Lasallian institutions in the world that have recently celebrated their centenary. During such occasions, we often look back to the rich history of our school and identify the various milestones that have contributed to what our beloved alma mater is today. One such milestone for St. Michael’s Institution is the actual laying of the foundation stone of the first school building 91 years ago. Constructed in stages for a period of about thirty years, it boasts a lengthy façade that has earned recognition as a heritage building of Malaysia. The building itself witnessed the progress of the school from its humble beginnings to its current tradition of providing quality and holistic education to the youth. We owe this impressive building to two icons whose examples of being “valiant and true” are ideal for all Michaelians to emulate. The first icon is well known Brother Vernier - Auguste, the first Brother Director of St. Michael’s Institution and the man behind the construction and design of the building. With his foresight and careful planning, he dared to build a structure bigger that anything in Ipoh at that time. Despite all difficulties in finances, government permits and criticisms, they were able to open the first part of the building a year after laying the foundations. The second icon is Brother Patrick O' Donovan who ensured the survival of St. Michael’s Institution during the Second World War. He foresaw the increase in enrollment and persisted in procuring government approval for the expansion of the building paving the way for its final completion in 1951 by his successor. Brother Patrick was imprisoned during the war and brought the school back to shape as soon as the war was over. He introduced Science and Chinese language classes, as well as establishing several school societies including “THE MICHAELIAN” magazine in 1948. The stories of Brother Vernier - Auguste and Brother Patrick O' Donovan and the Brothers that came after them are worth sharing. Their legacies stand tall and proud, valiant and true. Your glorious history, like the horizontal lines of the school building, point a straight and clear direction to follow: “Onward Michaelians, Valiant and True!” I encourage you to share your inspiring icons to all the Lasallians in Asia and the world. Be assured of my prayers for all of you! Live Jesus in Our Hearts!

BR. EDMUNDO L. FERNANDEZ FSC Brother Visitor of La Sallian Schools Lasallian East Asia District (LEAD)

13 It is plainly evident that a unique project of all our Lasallian Schools in Malaysia is our School Magazine. It not only serves to recall the events for the year but is a permanent gift that we will cherish all the years of our life as individuals and as a community of Lasallians.

It is with these sentiments that I on behalf of the La Salle Brothers and the Lasallian Family in Malaysia share these few thoughts for your Michaelian 2013. It is indeed appropriate that you have chosen as the theme for this year “Onward Michaelians! Valiant and True”. We can begin with the assumption that all Michaelians - the Students, Administrators, the Teachers, the Parents, the Alumni and Associates see the need to Move Forward.

But we can also begin with a basic Question: Is our Way Forward A Quest or A Follow-the Rest? It is obvious that today Life cannot be just about following the Crowd (As some people will say... Ikut saaaaja) but as Lasallians to be ready for the onerous and arduous task of blazing a new trail in the wilderness with the post-modern Y and Z Generation! It is this prophetic trail-blazing adventure in 17th century France by John Baptist de La Salle that we are called to revisit in 21st century globalised Malaysia. It is in this new context that the word Valiant takes a deeper meaning as a new bravery and ardent steadfastness to the Lasallian Educational Mission in Malaysia.

The core challenge of Transforming Lasallian Schools as Michaelians and Lasallians in Malaysia calls for a bravery and courage to creatively offer a new model of education with its quality and integrity, unique pedagogy and participatory approach. We need to focus on holistic education: transforming persons through character-building and nurturing an ecology inspired by the Lasallian ethos and in association with all the members of the Lasallian Family. We need to take greater responsibility for the Young, who are facing difficulties in and outside the school and offer them alternative vocational and career paths. Today this is bravery!!

We need to remind ourselves that we have never been the pliant Crowd; we have always strayed into the Difficult Path ahead of others because we have been VALIANT in our Ways and TRUE to our DREAMS : one that is founded on a Faith that fires the Within, the Hope and Joy that binds us in Association and a Love that can only be measured by the Giver (Educator) and the Receiver (Learner).

BR. ANTHONY ROGERS FSC Director Christian Brothers’ Schools Malaysia

14 Greetings of peace and goodwill!

It is my privilege to be still part of the Michaelian scene, on the sidelines perhaps but still as a committed observer.

There is so much evidence of the Michaelian spirit in the many activities, both daily and seasonal, and in the fine level of participation, in the ever emerging youth leaders who proudly align themselves with all that is best in our traditions.

While we focus on the achievements let us keep in mind that our Lasallian mission gives priority to the poor, the unloved, the excluded and the disoriented. These especially need to feel accepted, appreciated, and listened to.

They may not be so visible, we may even have to seek them out to give them appropriate care. Within each class community, and the larger school community, fellow students who are caring and responsible can play a crucial role. We encourage them to do this.

It is also a key concern of both the teacher and the parent, and in some cases professional help may have to be sought.

We like to rally to our watchword ONWARD MICHAELIANS! VALIANT & TRUE! Let us make sure no one is left behind.

QUIS UT DEUS

DATO’ BROTHER VINCENT CORKERY

15 “.....Heaven will e’er protect, sons of St. Michael’s valiant and true!” - I guess that most of us Michaelians would be humming these words to the tune of our School Rally when we read them. And surely we shall be duly blessed with heavenly wellbeing if we remain valiant and true in all that we do. Indeed the seare relevant words of wisdom and inspiration for ending our school song, for these values are generally found in wise and respected leaders and successful people. There are a few ways to look at what it means to be valiant and true. An example is the principle of keeping true to our word or promise, even when it sometimes is inconvenient to do so. By doing so we maintain our integrity and build the trust and respect that are necessary for healthy relationships. A simple example, being punctual for an appointment is something highly valued by the other party, as few would like to waste their time waiting for latecomers. Therefore even if it is really impossible to keep an appointment due to unforeseen and unavoidable events, we could maintain some integrity by informing the other party in advance, or as soon as we can. Authenticity is another example of being valiant and true. It is important to make a stand for what is right rather than who is right. It takes courage to say something that is contradictory to the view of one who is popular, significant or powerful. Therefore some people do tend to go with the flow and say what he thinks is popular, without deep conviction. Worst still, he goes on to act differently in another environment. Consistency in a person’s words and deeds defines his personality and character. Imagine the difficulty of dealing with a person who lacks conviction and changes his stand from time to time. I would like to share with you that I highly value and seek characteristics of integrity and authenticity in my organization’s executives and staff. So too would most employers. A common trait for survival is for one to adapt to the environment and sometimes even to compromise the truth and principles of right and wrong just to win approval and acceptance amongst peers. Haven’t we seen cases of people falling into gangsterism and the habit of smoking and drinking just because of peer pressure? This is but a gentle reminder on the virtues of being valiant and true under social pressure, to stay on the right path and away from trouble. Abraham Lincoln stoodfirmly for principles of human equality and even declared civil war to fight for liberty and civil rights. Among other noble stands, and under extreme pressure from rich and powerful businessmen and politicians, he steadfastly remained valiant and true, to abolish slavery in the southern states of America and confer full citizenship upon ex-slaves. Being valiant and true are the foundation stones to build healthy, mature, interdependent and mutually fulfilling relationships between friends, husbands and wives, and business associates. Such values will carry us through life successfully. As we enter the second Michaelian century, I wish that these values will continue to be internalized in all Michaelians. Onward Michaelians! Valiant and True!

TAN SRI DATO’ SERI LEE OI HIAN Chairman, Board of Governors 16 2013 has been a momentous year for your PTA. Because of the contribution from your parents we were able to assist the school administrators in uplifting your schooling experience. Your parents contribution is appreciated and the cooperation of the school administrators is valued. I and my committee members thank you all.

In 2013 your PTA carried out our normal duties with ease as contributions from parents were encouraging. We budgeted for RM30,000 to help needy students. This amount appears large but when broken down we were only able to help ten students from each Form. I hope that your PTA, through your support will be able to continue this worthwhile project. I am proud to have been able to represent you all to channel your contributions towards this cause and thank you for your support. We also undertook the improvement to our staff dining room and toilets. This work may not directly benefit our children but I believe that the payback can be measured empirically. When our teachers are comfortable they are happy and a happy teacher will bring out the best in our children.

In 2012 your PTA and the Board of Governors decided to plan for a concert hall and car park. Through the help of our Second Finance Minister, Dato Seri Husni, who is a Michaelian, we were allocated two hundred thousand ringgit by the Government towards this project. We still have a long way to go before we can raise enough funds to complete this project but meanwhile, in December 2013, we have started the initial work of clearing the ground first. Your PTA will support the BoG to materialise this project.

We must all believe in a common vision before we can be truly united. I suggest that Michaelians unite by sharing a common good. As a start, let us look at our founder, St. John De La Salle and his desire to care for the Last, Lost and the Least and begin from here. Let us embrace this gentleness and kindness towards our fellow Michaelians. Let us be identified by our honesty and politeness. When you step out from school as a group, let others identfy you as Michaelians; not because of your school badge but because of your sportsmanship and fairplay.

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to be of service to this great Institution. I wish you all success in your strive for Unity and Truth.

Yours sincerely, JOSEPH MICHAEL LEE ONN HEAN PTA Chairman, SMK St. Michael, Ipoh

17 Greetings to SMI Principal Madam Loh Wei Seng, her administrative team, staff, students and parents and congratulations on another year of excellent achievement.

The recent centenary celebrations show-cased SMI as a vibrant community, a key element of our Michaelian heritage. The close bonding of the Board with the PTA and with the Old Michaelians’ Association reflects this sense of community in a very tangible way.

Highly significant also is the bonding which takes place in the classroom, on the playing field and as members of the many uniform groups. This is something we take into life with us and it warms the hearts of Michaelians wherever they go, right into later years.

More than ever it is “Onward Michaelians! Valiant & True”, a worthy tradition that we are happy to honour and maintain.

Special regards to one and all.

MR. ADRIAN TSEN KENG YAM President Old Michaelians’ Association

18 As we reflect on the year which is coming to a close, we are truly grateful for a number of achievements which have brought glory to the school. To start with, we added a few feathers in the cap by achieving excellent results in the PMR, SPM and STPM examinations. We have 51 students scoring all A’s in the PMR. The school was indeed honored to be awarded with appreciation certificates for great improvement in SPM and STPM by the District Education Office. In the field of sports, our national shot putt champion, R. Meveeqhen, marked his international debut by winning the bronze medal in both the South-East Asian Youth Athletics Championships 2013 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and the ASEAN Schools Game Athletics 2013 in Hanoi, Vietnam. At the state level co- curricular achievements, St. Michael’s produced state champions in the National Science Challenges, RHB-NST Spell-It Right and the Pidato 1Malaysia. We also achieved 2nd placing at the state level in Debate, Public Speaking, Tennis and Badminton. Congratulations and thank you teachers, parents and students for your great achievement and commitment. I must mention the successful production of our annual drama, this year being “The Lion King” and “The Michaelian Talentime”. This project is traditionally a joint effort between the school and the Old Michaelians Association, with the strong support of the La Salle Brothers, the Board of Governors, The Parent-Teacher Association, teachers, parents and students. Our sincere appreciation to all of them especially the drama director, Miss Corrinne Mah and the “Talentime” coordinator Miss Foong Yin Pui. Special thanks to Mr. Adrian Tsen, the main fund-raiser cum President of the OMA for his continued and valuable assistance in making the drama a success. The Michaelian Military Band made another milestone this year by having successfully organised a concert to raise funds to acquire new instruments. My deepest appreciation to all donors and sponsors, not forgetting the concerted efforts put in by the teacher advisers, band members, parents, teachers and students to make the concert a success. Our academic success and great co-curricular achievements this year have brought us much satisfaction and joy. The school theme this year, “Onward Michaelians! Valiant & True” is to inspire students to stride forward to be valiant and true Michaelians. It is our ardent hope that we could produce Michaelians who are courageous, determined, faithful and with high integrity. We expect all Michaelians to be well-mannered, respect others and care for one another especially the under-priviledged in line with the slogan of St. Michael’s Institution, “Faith, Service and Community”. It is a Michaelian tradition to have a school theme as guiding principle to achieve our expectations as stated in the theme. I take this opportunity to thank Dato’ Brother Vincent Corkery, the La Salle Brothers, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Lee Oi Hian, members of the Board of Governors, Mr. Adrian Tsen and the OMA, Mr. Joseph Michael Lee, members of the PTA, Mr. Michael Lip and the Klang Valley SMI Alumni Association for their moral, spiritual and financial support. Lastly, I thank the Editorial Board members for their excellent team work in putting on record all happenings and achievements in school. Their creativity and enterprise skills have undoubtedly succeeded in producing a quality magazine. I must also mention the advertisers who continue to support us and individuals who contributed articles and assisted in editing. My best wishes. “Onward Michaelians ! Valiant And True” QUIS UT DEUS

t’s an honour for me to be here to deliver this speech. Never in my wildest dream I have dreamt of giving this speech in front of old I Michaelians, teachers and parents. I have been in this school for eight years including this year and I am really proud to proclaim myself as a ‘Michaelian’. This is because we Michaelians have our own unique way of doing things that we are assigned to do. The Michaelian spirit which is inherited from our seniors gets stronger every year. I would like to thank GOD for what he has given me so far. I owe my deepest gratitude to my alma mater and to my parents especially my mother. The school has taught me a lot and it has brought me here. My mother is very considerate and tolerate a lot with me as I have duties to carry on in the school. I am also thankful to all the teachers who have taught me so far because they have moulded me into what I am today. Last but not least I would like to thank all my Michaelian brothers and sisters who were right there when I needed them. My mom used to tell me that if only she had a chance she would build a house for me in this school because I spend most of my time in school rather than at home. When I was a boy scout, the Scout Den became my second home whereas now the school has become my second home. The La Sallian culture really has taught me of who I am and what can I do to help others. De La Salle has taught me that giving is more fulfilling than taking. One thing we Michaelians have in common is that when we put our heart and soul into what we do, we really do it to our best and that makes others to think twice before they make up their mind to face us and that is something I really cherish. It’s not an easy journey to be where I am today and it’s not going to be an easy journey either to excel in life but we have to learn to take life for what it is. The one thing that I always remind myself of is only a coward stays back and

VALIANT AND TRUE VALIANT AND does not do anything while a leader takes the first step and strives forward and learns from mistakes to do well in future. Before I end my speech I would like to say this “We were born for a reason and as humans we have to find the reason because at the end of the day that very reason is going to define who we are”. Thank you. MICHAELIAN QUIS UT DEUS ONWARDS

SERAN NICHOLAS PILLAI YOGARAJAH Michaelian Head Prefect 20 0LFKDHOLDQ ...... LADY HEAD PREFECT FOO KAI YEN FOO KAI YEN

t is an honour and a privilege to be able to stand here today to say a few words. First of all, I would like to thank God for his guidance and express I my deepest appreciation for my parents and teachers who constantly inspired me to excel and the Lasallian Brothers whom I’ve crossed path with that gave me sound advice. My gratitude goes to fellow Michaelians who have journey faithfully with me throughout my smooth sailing and turbulent times in St. Michael’s Institution.

It has been a very eventful and fulfilling twelve months serving this school and meeting many interesting and inspiring people. I still remember the very first time I stepped into this school, in awe at the grandeur of the school building, in fear not knowing what to expect from the students here and in love with the warmth and welcome I received. To be given the opportunity to learn and adopt the Michaelian traditions and culture and the Lasallian values as well as the experience of working with different kinds of people are lessons I will forever treasure in my life. St. Michael Institution has taught me the realities of life that the journey in achieving something is more important than the destination itself. The thought of being a Lady Michaelian never crossed my mind but the experience of being one will forever be treasured.

Fellow Michaelians,

Life is but of many pit stops in a Formula One race. It is necessary to make these stops, to improve, to change as well as to learn but I daresay, these stops that you have made or are going to make will be of great help to spur you on to your final destination. Behind every trial and turbulation lies a great lesson. Let us not forget our principles and ethics that have brought us this far and let us stand firm together as Michaelians in bringing the school to greater heights.

VALIANT AND TRUE VALIANT AND Allow me to end with a quote. “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough” -Mae West

Thank You. MICHAELIAN

21 LFKDHOLDQ 0OF THE YEAR ...... MEVEEQHEN A/L RAVI CHANDRAN ...... FOO KAI YEN Receiving the Nicet Joseph Medal and being honored with the Michaelian of the Year 2013 Award was something I never dreamt of. Jogging my memory to the moment I stepped foot on the compound of St. R Michael’s and looking at the majestic building ahead gave me an evergreen impact in my mind where I can still recall how I thanked my lucky stars to be in such a great school. I remembered my parents telling me that it’s imperative to be conspicuous amongst the crowd and create a good first impression as it will always be lasting. Having this in mind, I walked into this wonderful school with pride and burning desire to emerge as an exemplary student. I wish to wholeheartedly express my utmost respect and deepest gratitude towards the headmistress, Madam Loh Wei Seng, teachers, friends and of course my parents for their continuous support and motivation which spurred me up to maintain my stance of consistently attaining good academic records throughout the years in this school. Their endless support bolstered my sports trail as well, starting from scratch from merely representing the school to representing the district, and then the state and eventually the country. In May 2013, I made a significant achievement by winning the gold medal in the Nationals, MSSM 2013 for the Under 18 boys shot putt event. I made a breakthrough by enjoying a meteoric rise to the international arena, representing the country and bagging the bronze medals in both the SEA Youth Athletics Championships in Ho Chi Minh and ASEAN Schools Games in Hanoi both held in June 2013. With my outstanding performance in the ASEAN Schools meet where I had set a personal best, I qualified to the World Youth Championships 2013 held in Donetsk, Ukraine in July which was the meet I was most cognizant and fully focused on from the beginning of the year but I was denied the opportunity to compete due to technical hitches. I then had the most propitious experience throughout my sports trail, competing with fellow athletes all around Asia in the Asian Schools Meet held in Pahang where I emerged 4th placing. Throughout the busy year, my committed teachers were the biggest pillars of support in my academics as they guided and helped me out altruistically, ensuring that I possess the best of both worlds. Some were even willing to sacrifice their time after school to assist me in developing a clearer understanding regarding a particular subject. I couldn’t thank these educators more. I was also offered to join the Bukit Jalil Sports School but I staunchly declined it due to my indescribable affection towards the alma mater, living by the saying “Once a Michaelian, always a Michaelian”. Being entitled as a Michaelian isn’t just a pride but truly is a lifetime’s treasure. The Michaelian Spirit flames in me wherever I go. Being a Michaelian has truly imparted essential moral values in me. I’m greatly inspired by the countless number of former Michaelians who have developed and entrenched the legacy St. Michael’s Institution has today. Patience, perseverance and courage are the most important values we Michaelians should adorn in living a virtuous life. I am thankful to the Lord for introducing these true people of the Michaelian community who enriched my life as they have unfailingly stood by me through thick and thin throughout my years in this school. Lastly, I would like to seize this opportunity to wish all Michaelians a great success in their future endeavors. Onward Michaelians, Valiant and True. Thank you.

t. Michael’s success, long-standing presence and strong reputation in the community are mainly attributed to a team of very committed and determined members who S sit on its Board of Governors. Besides ensuring that the rich La Sallian tradition and character of St Michael’s Institution are closely preserved, the governors have always hold firmly to their instrumental role as custodian to preserve the values, heritage and ethos of Lasallian education among the students.

The Board has never forsaken the needs of “the last, the lost and the least” at St. Michael’s. It provides financial assistance for the marginalised in the school population. One such program is to hire teaching personnel to conduct extra classes in core subjects to assist the students academically. This is in line with our commitment to support our young people in every way as they begin to make their way in the world.

We look forward to a future which not only consolidates the roles of the De La Salle’s and our teachers, but which sees the standards of the school continue to rise, focussing on the Lasallian ideals of “Faith, Service and Community”.

25 Report on the OLD MICHAELIANS ASSOCIATION ......

irstly, we would like to take a minute to remember our past honorary secretary Mr. Harneak Singh who passed on in April 2013. We remember his tireless F contributions and selfless sacrifices towards the Michaelian cause as an old boy and through his tenure as the secretary of the Old Michaelians Association. The late Harneak was instrumental in realizing the setting up of the Michaelian Heritage Gallery and compiling the many historical facts of the school. For many of us, Harneak Singh remains strong in our memory.

Staying true and faithful to the alma mater, OMA continued to bring the old boys together through its popular annual dinners. For three consecutive years, 2011, 2012 (being St. Michael’s Centennial Celebration) and this year, the excitement among the old boys was particularly felt as the dinners and gatherings were held at St. Michael’s grounds. The gatherings of thousands of old boys, members of the Lasallian alumni nationwide and well- wishers from many corners of the world had indeed brought the Michaelian community much closer.

We also reached out to the needy, particularly students who were in need of financial assistance to acquire workbooks, shoes or uniforms. It’s our way to give back to the alma mater. Our annual visit to the residents at Asrama Bintang, a home for aged women with intellectual, physical and emotional difficulties, forms the main part of our agenda. It would always be a time for fellowship, dinner and to distribute financial aid.

OMA continued to assist the school in strengthening the tradition of performing arts in St. Michael’s - this year being “The Lion King”. We wish to thank the Principal, teachers, the director Miss Corrinne Mah, the crew and the cast for such a brilliant and superb performance.

OMA has good working relationships with the BOG headed by Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian, PTA under the leadership of Mr. Joseph Michael Lee and SMI Principal Madam Loh Wei Seng. We also maintain a good relationship with the Brothers and other Lasallian Associations

26 Brother David Hawke On Official Visit To SMI 4th July, 2013 ......

eneral Councillor of De La Salle Christian Brothers (Pacific-Asia Region Conference) Brother David Hawke was at St Michael’s Institution, Ipoh on an official visit. He G was welcomed by the Principal, Madam Loh Wei Seng and her administrators when he walked into the school compound from the La Salle Centre. To add merriment to the occasion, the prefects formed a reception line to welcome our guests.

A brief discussion about school matters was later held at the OMA Secretariat. Also present at the simple session were Sector Leader for Malaysia, Brother Anthony Rogers, Brother Vincent Corkery and Brother Matthew Bay.

Brother David was obviously amazed with the school’s efforts in keeping the Lasallian ethos and tradition alive. The entourage also met up with teachers and students.

At the school parlour, Brother David was similarly impressed when he noticed that awards for the “Michaelian of The Year” were presented in honour of past Superior-General Brother Nicet-Joseph. (Brother Nicet visited SMI in 1962 and the first recipient of “Michaelian of the Year” was accorded to commemorate his visit. Brother Nicet was S-G from 1956-1966). According to Brother David, St Michael’s is the only school which remembers Brother Nicet this way.

On behalf of all Michaelians, we express our appreciation to Brother David and Brother Rogers for spending some time with us.

Posted to the last port of call on 1st January 1991 from SMK Seri Puteri Ipoh in 1990, Mrs. Yee, as she was fondly known, had spent a period of 22 years in St. Michael’s Ipoh. She is known among her colleagues as one exemplary teacher and this, perhaps as much as anything else, inspired and motivated those around her. Mrs. Yee, through the eyes of many, could do the job really well, had bags of enthusiasm, always on the move and her presence itself created healthy atmosphere and team-work. Throughout her service, Mrs. Yee was twice recognised by the Ministry of Education by being awarded the Excellence Service Award in 1995 and 2008. She was the department head for Science and Mathematics from 2005 to 2008 before she was promoted as Sixth Form academic teacher in 2008. Mrs. Yee obtained her primary and secondary education in Main Convent Ipoh after which she studied Sixth Form in St. Michael. Her excellent results enabled her to further her studies in University Science of Malaysia, Penang, majoring in Chemistry and Mathematics. She graduated in 1979. Puan Thevanai described Mrs. Yee as a very dedicated lady who puts students above self, working tirelessly to give her best to the students. “Being a devout Christian, she has practised a strong sense of right and wrong”, said Puan Thevanai, a colleague and friend of Mrs. Yee. For me, Mrs. Yee has outstanding commitment and her outstanding ability to impart knowledge to her charges in the classroom makes her stand out above the rest. Happy Retirement, Mrs. Yee. We hope that you will maintain a relationship with the school for a long time to come. Written by : MR. PETER KHIEW 36 28th March 2013 was another sad day as St. Michael’s Ipoh lost a great teacher who retired. For Pn. Hamsiah bt. Abd Shukor, It was an end to her 32 years of service as a teacher but a whole new chapter to her retirement life. Pn. Hamsiah who chose to retire at the age of 56, got her teaching degree at Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris, (1979-1980) where she studied English and Geography. She then started her teaching career in SMK Raja Shahriman, (1981). After only a year, she was then transferred to SMK (P) Methodist, Ipoh for 29 years (1982- 2011) before she was transferred to her last port, SMK St. Michael, Ipoh (1/12/2011-22/3/2013).

Pn. Hamsiah taught Bahasa Melayu and Civics eventhough they were not her specialization. Her dedication and passion towards the students and her work did not go unseen as she was awarded with the Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang in the year 2000 and the year 2011. She was also an Examiner for BM papers. Even as she copes with taking care of her students, she also had the responsibility of looking after her family - 5 sons. She was known as a determined teacher who would enlighten her students with a love for the subject.

We wish you well Pn. Hamsiah, and may you enjoy the rest of your retirement years.

40 A year in St. Michael’s isn’t complete without the annual Michaelian Run. Every year, it has been the school’s tradition to organize the Michaelian Run in conjunction with our Sports Day and students will go full force to earn points for their respective sport houses.

The main purpose of the run is to foster the strong bonds among Michaelians as well as to encourage a healthy lifestyle among students through physical exercise. Fellow Michaelians potrayed the school theme ‘Onward Michaelians! Valiant and True’ through their enthusiasm and participation in the event.

41 The Prefects, Librarians and Monitors are expected to set the highest example in dress, attendance, conduct and involvement in school affairs. Their duties include assistance in the canteen, at school functions of all kinds, and in the conduct of assemblies, taking care of classrooms, managing the library and so on. Thus, an impressive ceremony was held to elect the board members. The guest of honour, Insp. Arumugam a/l Muthukumar, Cawangan Gerakan IPD, Ipoh presented a speech on the importance of these boards and the honourable role they play in uplifting the image of the school through several responsible duties they’re appointed to discharge. After that, Pn. Loh Wei Seng emphasized in her speech that the basic requirement to be a student leader is to be well liked by fellow teachers and to be confident with outstanding interpersonal skills. The members of the board proudly ascended to the stage to receive their certificates. The ceremony ended with the customary singing of the School Rally.

42 Each year the number of school students playing truant has been increasing drastically. Thus, an awareness programme was organized by St. Michael’s Institution (SMI) counseling unit at the La Salle Auditorium on the 14th of March 2013. The main focus of the programme was to completely eradicate cases of students playing truant.

En. Ismail Desa, Counselor of Institut Teknologi Perak was invited to conduct an awareness session with the Form 5 students. He emphasized on the importance of attending school and educate pupils not to be negatively influenced by friends to skip school or lessons as it may affect one’s reputation as well as their education.

Before he ended the session, he reminded the students that a successful student is a disciplined student. The session was a success and had encouraged students to uphold the Michaelian spirit at all times, firstly by not playing truant.

43 On the 18th of March the students who sat for the 2011 Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) exams gathered once more to collect their results. They gathered at the school hall with faces brimming with anticipation and nervousness. The students were finally given the green light to collect their results. As they received their results, there were tears of joy and also tears of regret for some as they gazed upon the product of their hard work. SMK St. Michael was proud to produce a total of four students who managed to obtain 4A’s. They were Teoh Jia Heng, Ng Lam Kean, Yew Kar Meng and Chiang Yi Fan. The others who managed to score with flying colours were Tan Min Hue, Tang Siew Kee and Wong Cha Zeong. This also happened to be the last batch that got through the Terminal STPM system. The passing rate for this batch was a staggering 97.97%. It was a day of mixed emotions for many but it was certainly a day to remember. At the end of the day they could finally keep their head held high and proudly say that they had graduated from school and for the final time bid farewell to their alma mater. Congratulations to all achievers who managed to make the school proud. 44 The Form Five school leavers stepped foot into school once again to obtain their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results. Six years of primary education plus another five years of secondary education all came down to that very moment which would define their future. The sense of eagerness, fear and excitement was clear in the eyes of the students. They gathered outside the hall having a quick catch up with their friends. At about 10.30am the doors of the school hall were opened and the students were allowed to take their results. As the teachers handed out the results to the respective students, friends flocked around them with anticipation to see their results. Master Chan Keng Hoe managed to score an impressive 10A+. Master Ho Joo Hin managed to obtain 9A+ and 1A and another three students who managed to obtain 8A+, 1A, and 1A- were Master Amirthan Nesan, Master Kevin Mano, and Master Lehwinns Raj. Master Kenneth Mano also passed with flying colours as he obtained 8A+ and 1A-. There were 17 other students who also managed to achieve impressive results with a mixture of A+, A and A-. Once again the SPM students managed to make the school proud as they were able to hike up the school’s overall passing rate to 95.4% which also happened to be the highest compared to previous years. Congratulations to all those high achievers who once again kept SMK St Michael amongst the top scorers in the SPM examination.

45 The Evolving Potential Individual Career Programme was organized by SMI’s Counseling Unit together with the University of Petronas, Tronoh. It was aimed to help the Form Five students in deciding their career pathway.

Career tests were held to determine every student’s interest in their respective career field. This programme turned out to be very beneficial as it helped the students in determining their suitable career in the future. A special thank you to the counseling unit for organizing an event to guide the students in choosing a career pathway.

46 It was time again this year for our annual school visit. Some members who had arrived a little early decided to savour the exquisite Ipoh in our dear tuck shop, now known as "the food court", so we understand. Shortly after 9.00am on the 12th day of April 2013, members of the St. Michael's Institution (SMI) Alumni Association, Klang Valley, were welcomed to our Alma Mater by a lion dance and drum performance by members of the Wushu Club and by members of the Michaelian Military Band. The Military Band then played the School Rally, before the delegation proceeded indoors. SMI Alumni Association, President Michael Lip then presented RM15,000 donation towards bursaries to 75 secondary school students at our school; in the form of a mock cheque received by SMI Senior Principal, Mdm. Loh Wei Seng. The 75 students were identified by their class teachers as needing financial assistance to assist in their study expenses, including to buy books, uniforms, for travel expenses and so on. The candidates were then interviewed by four counsellors to assess their financial need the 75 were selected. RM200 would be disbursed to each student in RM50 monthly instalments over four months. Association Secretary Francis Chong and Committee Member Helen Lip presented subsidy letters to each of the 75 students on behalf of Michaelians Give Back Fund Chairman Leong Siew Seng who was not present. Our President also presented an RM5,000 donation to the Michaelian Military Band by Chan Kam Seng, a former band member. Next, Michaelians Lee Tat Boon, a lawyer and optometrist Lee Wei Seong each gave their younger brethren and sisters some sound advice and inspirational words of wisdom on their success, especially after they leave school, based upon the challenges they themselves faced and overcame in their respective careers. In breakout sessions which followed, Michael Lip, a prominent landscape architect; Dr. Michael Chong, a senior lecturer in surgery at the Royal College of Medicine, UniKL Ipoh; and Thomas Amernathan, an insurance and investment consultant each delivered an hour long career talk to students on careers in their respective fields. 56 The meeting between teachers and parents is aimed to help parents understand the problems faced by their children so that they may better guide them to be more responsible and improvise the shortcomings in both academic and non- academic matters. The Open Day gives an opportunity to parents to see how their child is getting on in school, where their strengths and weaknesses lie, how they socialise with other students and their involvement in extracurricular activities. Furthermore, the one to one setting allows teachers to learn more about the students from their parents or guardians in order to work together towards their success. On that day, parents seemed to be delighted upon their child’s achievements and appreciated the dedication of our school’s teachers for working hard towards achieving academic excellence. 2013 turned out to be a good year with multiple achievements of our talented Michaelians.

65 Merdeka is a word in the Malay language meaning independence or freedom. It is derived from the Sanskrit Maharddhika meaning "rich, prosperous and powerful”. Our nation, Malaysia is a peaceful and prosperous land free from war, rich in culture and blessed with a multiracial population. The National Day celebration in St. Michael’s institution was held on the 2nd of September 2013 to acknowledge the sacrifice and dedication of our leaders towards forming an independent nation as well as to rekindle the spirit of patriotism in all Michaelians. The celebration began with the launching of the event followed by the distribution of flags to students. 67 The OMA dinner held on 28th September 2013 was another success, judging by the overwhelmed response by the regular old boys who wanted to be with their friends every year. For many, it was an annual meeting in Ipoh and at SMI to catch up the latest news, perhaps for a day or a few hours then they would part ways for yet another round of get-together the following year. It was for that reason, old Michaelians consider the annual dinners as a must-attend affair. The OMA dinner is now considered as a balik kampung. Just as the OMA president Mr. Adrian Tsen said in his message, "It warms the hearts of Michaelians coming from far and near to return to the old school, so full of memories for them, above all the majestic building - the pillar and icon of Michaelian pride". Many are already asking when the 2014 dinner is held and the answer is always the last Saturday of September every year. If Saturday is the day, then balik kampung would probably start on Thursday or Friday with family members in tow. Friday and Saturday morning are usually a tour in the school, showing proudly to their spouses and children the classrooms they studied in or the places they usually hang out with their friends etc. The dinner this year gathered about 900 old boys at the basketball court with guests from other La Salle schools like St. George's, St. Paul's and members from the SMI KL Alumni. Brother Vincent and Brother Matthew Bay were also with us. The committee members were pleased that their months of preparations had indeed culminated with many happy faces and heaps of praises from many. We are looking forward to next year's dinner but as of now, it's time to take a break. I take the opportunity to thank school principal Mdm. Loh Wei Seng, her teacher advisers in charge of the Military Band (Mr. Liew Boon Ket), prefects (Mr. Karu) and scouts (Mr. Christopher) for their strong support in making the occasion special and memorable.

SMI remained at No. 12 in the North ," she said, adding that it was all the teachers' and students' hardwork. Editorial says: Congratulations boys for your hardwork. How long have Brother Vincent stayed in Ipoh? I’ve been living in Ipoh for almost 56 years. Ipoh had a population of 100,000 people in the 50s. Now, it has gone up to 700,000 people. Back then, we could see people living in multi story apartments hanging their baskets outside the windows till they reached the ground floor for trading purposes. Some people would just wear their pajamas in the evening and leisurely walk around town.

Top The writers with Dato’ Brother Vincent What are the changes seen in St. Michael Institution compared to the previous years? Back in those days, the school was always occupied by students from day till night. For example, the field was always packed with students having their own sports activities. It was really hard to undergo maintenance to the field then as the field was virtually used non-stop! It pleases the eyes when you see students sweat it out in the field. However, the scenario has changed. What I notice nowadays is the field looks green, contrary to those days when the grass had no time to grow at all. Students leave the school compound right after the school bell rings. Back in those days, St. Michael’s was more like a home, not “just a school”. Many students back then would stay in the school to study until night in the library. Compared to now, the library is less favored by students. Sadly, the school has gone quiet as time goes by.

What’s the story behind the building of the 6th Form Block? In 1968, we managed to build the 6th Form Block. The cost for the building was around RM700,000. Unfortunately, we had only RM40,000 with us. When Brother Paul gave us the green light to continue with building the 6th Form Block, we pooled our resources and tried all sorts of way to overcome the financial problem. We had class collection every month, involving the primary and secondary students. Every student carried a special card to keep track of their collections. Everyone played their roles. We worked really hard. At the end of the month we managed to acquire around RM40,000. It was a really great success to manage to build the 6th Form Block with all the hard work from everyone! Yes, we named it, “Brother U Paul Block”, to remember his optimism and his faith in us.

How was the school library back in those days? At first, we had our library at the ground floor of the main building. It opened from 5am till 10pm every day back in the 80s’. To ensure more comfort for the students, it was time to add more books and to expand. We identified an ideal location at Brother U Paul Block. We managed to clear 3 classrooms at the second floor of the building and shifted the library there. It remains until today.

78 We call it the Marian Library.

What’s the magnificent story behind the sculpture in the school library? The Marian Library has a famous sculpture, “Falcon and the Falconer”. It is made up of welded steels mostly reused from damaged car bumpers and other unwanted steel materials. This sculpture acts as a reply to the poem “The Second Coming” by Irish poet William Butler Yeats in 1919. Part of the poem images a falcon wheeling about the sky, far away from the falconer who released it. The bird continues to wheel and gyre further and further away from the falconer. This metaphor stands for young people who have given up the standards of their parents and grandparents. The sculpture features a falconer stretching out the whole body and a falcon on the hand. The falcon lies right on top of the falconer’s hand freely, without any obstruction. It shows that the falconer gives freedom to the falcon, but also giving support and guidance to it. It reflects vividly that parents should give freedom to young people and support them as well.

What was the inspiration for introducing the class marching tradition? Class marching is a very unique tradition in St. Michael‘s Institution. We used to have house marching only before we implemented this. Students would be chosen from the four respective houses to march. This caused weaker students to be neglected among the students. The idea of class marching solves this problem. Now, every single student, strong or weak, is required to march together with his classmates, a practice which makes everyone equal. Teamwork can be nurtured as students undergo vigorous marching practice, including the designing of the class flags and sometimes, the class T-shirts. Class marching produces more student leaders and increase the discipline level in them.

What is your advice for fellow Michaelians, Brother? There’s a story of a 17-years old girl named Joanne from North Cork. She was born with a rare condition, total Amelia (birth defect), which left her limbless. She’s able to grip her iPhone between chin and what she calls her left hand. Joanne can text at a speed faster than anyone else just by using her upper and lower lip! Such achievement is rare but not impossible! This girl always gives me a superb motivation on how we must live our life to the fullest. Michaelians, there are many people in this world who can inspire and give us motivation in life. Discover them and know their stories. Always make yourself a better person! Another thing is Michealians should always continue their journey to discover the potential in them. No matter how hard life could be, Michaelians must always be strong and tough to face any situations which challenge them. I believe that being in St. Michael’s is a great opportunity to discover your talent. Unleash the potential in yourselves, Michaelians.

Note : The Interview with Brother Vincent was carried out at the La Salle Centre, Ipoh. It was a pleasant and candid interview. We started the interview at 1.40pm, on 18 October 2013 and by 2.45pm, it was time to wrap up the session. Brother Vincent, to me, is a walking heritage. He knows so much about St. Michael’s and still possesses sharp memory about things that are close to his heart. This interview will not be the last…

79 An INTERVIEWwith MASTER TIMOTHY CHEE ...... How were your early days in St. Michael’s while you were still studying? I was schooling in St. Michael’s Institution in the 1940s. I did not have to pay the school fees as I was a free scholar back then. I was actively involved with the scouts I was a King scout and also an instructor for the Girl Guides of some schools when I was in Form 4. I was also a regular painter of the stage props for the annual school dramas. I would say I was a quiet and timid person in school. Life was not easy as I had to juggle between school and helping my father in his construction work. How did you become a teacher? I started off as an Arts subject teacher when I was in Form 4 on Brother Paul’s request. I taught the primary school students in the afternoon after my morning school session. It was a voluntary work as I felt it was a way to give back to the school because the school had supported me in my schooling fees. After Form 5, I went back to school to teach Geography to Form 4 students and Arts to Form 6 students. I later went for teacher’s training in St. Joseph’s Training College under the school and church’s scholarship. Two years later, I came back to teach at St. Michael’s again.

What were your fondest memories in St. Michael’s, both as a student and a teacher? I can recall back when I was in Form 2, I took part in a concert held in the school. I did a dance and it was my first exposure to the world of arts and what the stage really was. I also learnt a lot from the teachers back then who handled us boys in a very disciplined manner. Whatever they say, the boys will do. I think that experience really helped me to develop as a teacher in my later years. Another memorable thing was during my time, we managed to produce 30 plus King scouts at one time, a record which stands till today. As a teacher, my fondest memories were all etched in the dramas that I produced. The experiences that I had working with the boys, helping them develop the skills which they did not think they have it initially and seeing the end product were simply priceless. Who inspired you the most? I would say it has to be my family. My parents really supported my ambition to be a teacher and they never said no when I had to stay back to teach in school or for scouts. Most of my family members are either teachers or nurses and I think that has influenced me in a way. Can you enlighten us about our annual school drama? Our school drama started way back. In those days, the Brothers were the directors of the plays. The main casts were taken by the school teachers while the students helped out as supporting actors or as stage crews. Our drama tradition was really strong and at one point, our school drama team went all the way to the national level in the interschool drama competition. Our dramas are full of plot and values that are portrayed in their own unique way. It is the identity of our alma mater.

80 An INTERVIEWwith MASTER CHOO AH CHYE ...... magine. Imagine living in the 1900’s, a period of time when most of the citizens struggled to make ends meet. Imagine the I hardships that they went through to pursue their education. Imagine technology hasn’t evolved from that era. Assortment of things like information and knowledge couldn’t be reached at our fingertips. Teachers played a crucial role in children’s lives in order to mould them to be a better person.

Filled to the brim with wisdom, this is Master Choo Ah Chye. He was a rugby player and a disciplinary teacher. As for now, he travels around the country after his retirement, reads and participates in sports during his spare time. Occasionally, Master will drop by the La Salle Centre to visit the Brothers. On the day of interview, Master Choo drove to school on a lovely morning with a blue car and came out of the car with a gracious smile, hands equipped with a water bottle and a book to be donated to our school library.

Master Choo attended SMK Methodist ACS Ipoh back then where he was actively involved in the rugby tournament and training, representing schools, state and country that brought about the name of Malaysia to a higher level. However, all things did not go smoothly at all times. Master once injured his elbow and paid the hospital a visit several times. Besides, Master Choo was a rugby coach too!

Teaching is an incredibly important profession and without the teachers, the child’s development will suffer a lot. Master Choo enjoyed teaching in SMI because of the hospitality of the school staff and the uplifting environment created by them. Master Choo had an extraordinary way of dealing with those problematic students back then. He would make students write a paper full of letters and collect fines from them. The fines collected were contributed to the school, which was a noble act indeed. Until now, Master Choo’s students can still recognise him in the crowd and shout and greet him.

81 An INTERVIEW with MRS. CHIN ......

eorge Eliot once said, “Only in the glory of pasting de we look into the depth of G love”. Ng Thew Foong, also known as Mrs. Chin, the laboratory assistant who had served in our school for 20 years bade goodbye as she left St. Michael’s Institution to continue her career at SMK , Ipoh only bringing along the unforgettable experiences and memories of interesting incidents she encountered throughout her service.

Being a staff here at SMI for the past two decades was truly a blessing, she said it gave her an incredible opportunity to assist students of different generations and to work under six principals who include Brother Paul, Brother Vincent, Mr. Chong Suan Ee, Mr. Balasubramaniam, Mr. Teh Chor Aun, Mr. Louis Rozario Doss, Mr. Phoon Chong Chee and Pn. Loh Wei Seng. Before she started her career in SMI, she worked at an old Michaelian’s clinic. After going through interviews and practical examinations, she was posted to be a laboratory assistant in SMI. Although she was new to the job, with the help and guidance of Mr. Austin de’ Silva, a junior assistant, she further learned the tricks of the trade.

When questioned what were some of the mistakes she made during her service, Mrs. Chin proudly gave herself a pat on the back followed by a giggle and claimed herself as a perfectionist who’s always on time and handles dangerous apparatus as well as the chemicals with care preventing occurrence of serious incidents. She recalled one of her unforgettable experience when SMI was reported to have a bomb in the building. Over the years, our laboratory assistant cultivated valuable friendships with which she spent cherishable moments. Among those are Pn. Lee, Cikgu Sohot, Pn. Rohana and Pn. Rosilawati.

Mrs. Chin concluded the session with a few words from the bottom of her heart.

“I’m not sad that I’m leaving but I’m happy that it happened after 20 years. I value my experience in SMI more than anything else and after spending a solid 20 years in this institution, I might drive here accidentally instead of heading to my new work place. The administrators, staff and teachers will be dearly missed as they taught me so much over the years. Not only that, I will miss the delightful smell of laboratory and the times I used to walk up and down along the corridors. All the best!”

Although it is upsetting to let go of an experienced staff like Mrs. Chin, we wish her all the best for contributing to this institution through her dedicated service.

A written preliminary spelling test was introduced this year. The written component consisted of 30 words - 10 each in the easy, medium and difficult categories. Only the top 100 contestants get to advance to each state challenge to vie for the best speller title at the National Finals in Kuala Lumpur on 19th October 2013. Over 500 participants registered for the secondary level written test in Perak, a record high in the history of SIR Challenge. Three (3) St. Michael’s Institution students took part in this year’s Spell it Right competition, they were; Derek Leong (4Sc5) Darren Leong (2A9) Tharun (2A6)

All 3 students qualified from the written test held on 30th June 2013 at Kolej Masterskill, Jalan , Ipoh as one of the top 100 spellers. On 6th October 2013, the Perak leg of the Spell-it-Right was held at the Taiping Sentral Mall. The 100 students were divided into 10 Batches of 10 students each. The students of each batch are seated on stage and each of them is given a word to spell and for those who spell their word correctly, they remain on stage. For those who misspell their word, sadly, their journey in this year’s competition ends. For the remaining students, they go through another round of words with the level of difficulty in each round increasing until only one student remained. The winners of each batch goes through to the Final (total of 10 Finalists). Our boys performance in the Preliminary Round were as follows; Derek Leong was eliminated after spelling “credentials “correctly but misspelt “androgynous” Tharun was eliminated after spelling “antagonist“ correctly but misspelt “teetotaller” Darren Leong spelt “extinguish” and “eschew” correctly but tripped up on “scripophily”. He managed to recover to spell “carafe” correctly to qualify for the Final. In the Final, the 10 Finalists were each given 3 words to spell. Darren Leong was the only one to spell all his 3 words correctly. His words were “idoneous”, “infomediary” and “instauration” Darren Leong will now represent Perak at the Spell it Right National Finals at Auditorium Kompleks Kementerian Dalam Negeri (KDM) Wilayah Persekutuan in Kuala Lumpur (on 19th October 2013).

e’ve learnt to expect the unexpected but what we accomplished without her, THANK YOU never in our wildest dream that we‘ll TEACHER!). The event proceeded very smoothly from W think of getting to the finals of STAR NIE speeches to the performance of the tale spin video category. Our initial aim was to just have fun contestant. We were very amazed by the tale spin and experience video making. We practically joined contestant! Their performance was very creative and on a whim without much planning. We then realized they showed great courage by performing in front of later the decisions we made on a whim cost us the crowd. After the performances, what we had long tremendous hardwork. Video making is definitely not waited for has finally came -the video category. However, I think our group had truly won over others and generally the title of our video is the the audience. It was a victorious moment when the general message of our video. When The audience were laughing, clapping and connected we were young, alphabets is the first thing we learnt to the video! The audience liked our video! in English, followed by spelling and sentences. ‘A for apple’ for example. Instead of learning something that It‘s really disappointing that our video wasn’t the is so common, we would like to spread a message of winning video, but this competition is truly a learning that cannot be found in textbooks; but a memorable event for all our members. Video making lesson that brings us to act beyond the box that we might be our once in a life time experience as we lined in and a lesson that can bring happiness and may not get a second chance. It might be on a whim, harmony. That is, of course, the lesson of acceptance. but we never regretted the decisions and most Learning to accept is a lesson for each and everyone importantly, we never gave up. Sometimes we should of us and that basically is the message that ought to just follow our heart, do our best, and things might be conveyed through our video, to remind people to just turn out better than what we expect! So, let‘s accept what might not favor us the most, but what live to our heart’s content and enjoy! might bring out the best in others. By : PN SHAFINAZAIDA Discontentment and frustration were not unusual for our group. However, we still made it through. And we believe that because we started everything from scratch and through our own effort, getting to the finals really meant a lot to us. It’s as if our hardwork has been paid off and recognized.

On 17 October 2013, we attended the Star NiE 2013 Finals at Kota Damansara Pizza Hut. We were accompanied by our teacher advisor, Puan Shafinaz (someone who guided us all along the video making process and we wouldn’t be anywhere near
