Weaverdyck 7 The Roman Empire I Introduction The Roman Empire was one of the largest and longest lasting of all the empires in the ancient world.1 At its height, it controlled the entire coast of the Mediterranean and vast continental hinterlands, including most of western Europe and Great Brit- ain, the Balkans, all of Asia Minor, the Near East as far as the Euphrates (and be- yond, briefly), and northern Africa as far south as the Sahara. The Mediterranean, known to the Romans as mare nostrum(‘our sea’), formed the core. The Mediterranean basin is characterized by extreme variability across both space and time. Geologically, the area is a large subduction zone between the African and European tectonic plates. This not only produces volcanic and seismic activity, it also means that the most commonly encountered bedrock is uplifted limestone, which is easily eroded by water. Much of the coastline is mountainous with deep river valleys. This rugged topography means that even broadly similar climatic conditions can pro- duce drastically dissimilar microclimates within very short distances. In addition, strong interannual variability in precipitation means that local food shortages were an endemic feature of Mediterranean agriculture. In combination, this temporal and spatial variability meant that risk-buffering mechanisms including diversification, storage, and distribution of goods played an important role in ancient Mediterranean survival strategies. Connectivity has always characterized the Mediterranean.2 While geography encouraged mobility, the empire accelerated that tendency, inducing the transfer of people, goods, and ideas on a scale never seen before.3 This mobility, combined with increased demand and the efforts of the imperial govern- ment to mobilize specific products, led to the rise of broad regional specializations, particularly in staple foods and precious metals.4 The results of this increased con- It has also been the subject of more scholarship than any other empire treated in this volume.

    MARINES AND MARINERS IN THE ROMAN IMPERIAL FLEETS Jasper Oorthuijs Since Chester Starr’s 1941 book The Roman Imperial Navy it has become generally accepted knowledge that “the crew of each warship, regard- less of its size, formed one centuria under its centurio (classicus) in the manner of a legionary centuria.”1 Boldly stating his case, Starr solved one of the most problematic peculiarities in the epigraphic habit of Roman naval troops in one great swoop. The problem referred to is the following: in roughly two thirds of the exstant inscriptions milites of the imperial eets stated that they belonged to some kind of war- ship, while the other third indicated that they belonged to a centuria. A small number indicated neither and a very few referred to both ship and centuria. Starr’s statement was never challenged despite the prob- lems that clearly exist with this theory. In what follows some of those problems will be addressed. First of all, the consequence of Starr’s theory is that we have to accept the idea that centuriones classici commanded a great range of troops: ship’s crews ranged in size from some 50 men for a liburna up to 400 in quinqueremes.2 There are however no indications of different grades of centurio in the eets. Moreover, because Starr squeezes a naval and army hierarchy into one, the trierarchs and navarchs, whether captains or squadron commanders, have to be forced in somewhere. The analysis covered mostly fragments of Book IV of Vegetius’ work, Book X of Strate- gikon and passages from Syrianus Magister. The results clearly indicate that the authors of treatises knew well the signifi cance of the soldiers’ morale and mental strength in a siege, seeing them as key components in ensuring the success of military operations and preventing the surrender of the defended positions. The analyzed writings also emphasize the involvement of civilians, who were supposed to not only seek protection from soldiers, but actually had a clearly defi ned role in the defence eff orts. The authors also understood that civilians, much more vulnerable to external stress factors than soldiers, were untrustworthy and more likely to give in to despair, which was to be prevented by various tricks meant to manipulate their psychology.     Milites Christi in the Medieval Kingdom of Hungary: a historiographical overview ZSOLT HUNYADI The overall objective of the following survey is to outline the achievements of East-Central European scholarship after the Second World War, with special re- gard to the medieval kingdom of Hungary.1 Presenting and evaluating the post-war historiography of the military-reli- gious orders in Hungary, one cannot, and certainly, should not skip the serious hiatus in the literature of church history in the "region." The "region", princi- pally, is meant to be Hungary, but as the topic concerns the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, the survey should also include, to a certain extent, present-day Croatia, Slovenia, Romania and Slovakia. It is not my objective to appraise the historiog- raphy of these Eastern European countries, but rather my intention is to display the major trends. Accordingly, emphasis should be given to the fact that the post- war Communist regimes, in effect from 1949, undermined medieval studies in general, and church history in particular. All pre-war projects were split by the early '50s and this process also effected the edition of primary (Latin) written sources as well. There was no way to obtain an academic degree by compiling high-quality source editions, and this fact hindered both directly and indirectly new research projects in any field of medieval studies. This mostly affected the edition of medieval charters.
