It does not exceed the prescribed word limit for the relevant Degree Committee. ii iii ABSTRACT Standing by the standards Military rank and social status in the Roman west from Augustus to Diocletian This thesis broadly conceived is about the relationship between military and civil society in the time of the Roman Principate. It is about making sense of the tensions experienced by the soldiers and veterans of the Roman army between their lives as milites and as cives. This thesis weaves soldiers and veterans back into the wider social fabric of the Roman world – the social environments from which they commenced their military service, and into which they would settle upon their discharge. The problem is approached from three distinct angles, primarily through the lens of the centurionate: 1) variation in the legal privileges and restrictions upon the social lives of military personnel according to their rank; 2) the tensions and benefits resulting from the social heterogeneity of those accorded the same military rank; 3) the importance, or perceived importance, of the military factor in the status and reception of the soldier or veteran within their hometowns. The first and second case-studies are approached by contrasting the representation of the social position of centurions in a variety of documents: literary and legal, epigraphical and papyrological. The third case-study utilises a combination of statistical and prosopographical approaches to epigraphy to build up a general picture of soldier and veteran participation in local elite life. These case-studies restore agency to soldiers and veterans by contrasting their self-representation with the ways in which they are represented by others: by the equestrians and senators who commanded them; by the literary and senatorial elites who wrote about them; by the towns they called home and whose local offices they held. This thesis argues that soldiers and veterans were actively engaged with, and responding to, the construction and deconstruction of their identities by various external groups, ultimately positioning themselves as the crucial link between army, town and emperor. iv v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS A recruit from Egypt to the Roman fleet at Misenum wrote a letter home to his family (BGU 423). He noted his receipt of travel expenses; thanked Serapis for being saved from danger at sea; sent best wishes to his friends; and offered gratitude to his family for his education. I cannot compare my toils at Cambridge to the dangers of a sea voyage, but at the end of my own journey in service to the Roman army I too must indicate my gratitude in kind. The last four years would have been an impossibility without the financial support of the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Pembroke College, which together provided a generous grant that covered the majority of my PhD and kindly offered further funds for academic opportunities within the UK and abroad. The Classics Faculty of Cambridge too demonstrated remarkable munificence in funding a term of my fourth year in addition to contributing to conference expenses. In John Patterson I found the most wonderful supervisor, who indulged my tendency to jump down academic rabbit holes and then stay to explore the warren, always rescuing me when necessary with the important question: “So what?” With each reading of the constituent parts of this thesis he had helpful observations and made connections that I had missed. It is with some embarrassment that I reflect upon the number of errors of all kinds he has had to catch in my work over the years; all that remain are my own responsibility. Other members of the faculty have been of great help in offering suggestions having read or listened to earlier versions of some of the material within this thesis, notably Christopher Kelly and Rebecca Flemming. In September 2019 I took advantage of 6 months intermission to live and study in Tokyo, arranged through Pembroke College and with financial assistance from the Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust through my alma mater, the Lancaster Royal Grammar School. I gained a much needed academic break, passable Japanese, and new friends. I returned to the UK in the midst of a global pandemic, and am fortunate to have been looked after with such kindness by my parents and brothers while waiting for the libraries at Cambridge to re-open. This study, then, is an examination of this class of men and the evidence we have for them. Modern scholarship’s apathy in this field of study is no doubt an effect of the lack of anything more than sparse one-dimensional references to veterans in the ancient literary sources, an aspect this paper will also examine.

Beim ersten kommt nur der Legionsname vor, beim zweiten gibt es daneben auch gewisse Personennamen, die als Namen der Leiter der Ziegeleien betrachtet werden. Unter diesen kommen mindestens drei von Zivilisten vor, die also zu Lokalwerkstätten der canabae gehören. Die bislang erschienenen drei Namen Iulius Serenus, Terentianus, P. Clodius... auf Baumaterialien und auf bestimmten Gegenständen heben das hervor. Von diesen Beispielen ausgehend wurde die Ansicht vertreten, dass in den Werkstätten Baumaterialien aus Lehm auf Bestellung der Behörden oder der Armee für öffentliche Zwecke oder für das Militär hergestellt wurden. Man kann zum ersten Mal feststellen, dass diese bedeutende wirtschaftliche Tätigkeit in den Lagerdörfern der Legion XIII Gemina von Apulum stattfand, und zwar in den privaten Ziegeleien, die sowohl für die Armee als auch für den privaten Bereich gearbeitet haben. Der bedarf an Baumaterialien für die Errichtung der öffentlichen oder militärische Bauten in den neuen Siedlungen Dakiens haben die Behörden dazu veranlasst, sich an private Unternehmer zu wenden. Die keramischen Baumaterialien für die Provinz wurden in den canabae von Apulum hergestellt. Weder die Ausmaße und der Umfang dieser Produktion noch deren Verbreitung auf dem Gebiet der Provinz können allerdings ganz erfasst werden. Die Produktion wurde vermutlich von der Legion XIII Gemina überwacht, von einem magister figlinae oder –arum, wie zum Beispiel Aurelius Godes.

    LIFE BY THE IMPERIAL ROAD - FRONTIER IDENTITIES Roman Villa and Settlement Excavation and Survey IDENTITY AND WEALTH: ROMAN PROVINCIAL LANDSCAPE STRATEGIES Rapolt, Transylvania, Romania June 7 - July 4; July 20 - August 1, 2020 During the Roman colonial occupation, southern Transylvania shows a very dynamic and intensive synthesis of Roman provincial life, where a multitude of processes of colonization and creolization take place side by side. Prior to the Roman conquest of 102AD, it was also the most densely populated region of the Dacian Kingdoms. Our project seeks to explore the integration of all the structural provincial elements present along the main Roman axes of communication and transport. Our research area is in the immediate proximity of both the imperial road and the Mures River, the extremely important gold deposits of the Carpathian Gold Moutains, and the political and military centers of Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana and Apulum. We will continue the excavation of the well preserved structures, including a villa rustica of palatial size, identified during our 2013-2019 field seasons. Our 2020 excavation and survey will aim at understanding the importance and impact of the proximity of the main axis of movement, communication and commerce on the Roman provincial rural life, and its evolution through time, as well as the local processes of identity creation. Moreover, Italy has twenty-eight colonies founded under my auspices which have grown to be famous and populous during my lifetime.’2 The quote above comes from the Res Gestae divi Augusti, the works or deeds of the deified Augustus, published after his death in 14 AD. Much like the rest of the Res Gestae, the quote above contains a boasting and propaganda element: Augustus has settled soldiers in colonies all over the world and they have all become great and grew very large. This gives an insight into the image that Augustus wanted to portray about his deeds and himself. Although Augustus has settled veterans in many colonies, he was definitely not the first to do so, as the process of establishing veteran colonies already started around 100 BC.

The Romans were indifferent to mathematical geography, with its system of latitudes and longitudes, its astronomical measurements, and its problem of projections. What they wanted was a practical map to be used for military and administrative purposes. Disregarding the elaborate projections of the Greeks, they reverted to the old disk map of the Ionian geographers as being better adapted to their purposes. Within this round frame the Roman cartographers placed the Orbis Terrarum, the circuit of the world. There are only scanty records of Roman maps of the Republic. The earliest of which we hear, the Sardinia map of 174 B.C., clearly had a strong pictorial element. But there is some evidence that, as we should expect from a land-based and, at that time, well advanced agricultural people, subsequent mapping development before Julius Caesar was dominated by land survey; the earliest recorded Roman survey map is as early as 167-164 B.C. If land survey did play such an important part, then these plans, being based on centuriation requirements and therefore square or rectangular, may have influenced the shape of smaller-scale maps. This shape was also one that suited the Roman habit of placing a large map on a wall of a temple or colonnade. Varro (116-27 B.C.) in his De re rustica, published in 37 B.C., introduces the speakers meeting at the temple of Mother Earth [Tellus] as they look at Italiam pictam [Italy painted].

Hirt INTRODUCTION The impact of Rome on the exploitation of natural resources remains highly visible in the many ancient stone and marble quarries dotting the landscape of the former empire. Not only do they reveal the techniques employed in separating the marble or granite from the rock face, the distribution of their output can still be traced. The progressively more scientific determination of type and origin of these stones used in sacred and profane architecture of the Roman Empire reveals an increasingly detailed image of the distributive patterns of coloured stones. Even so, the analysis of these patterns stays vexed: the written sources are frightfully mute on the core issues, expressly on the emperor’s role in the quarrying industry and his impact on the marble trade. Scholarly discourse has oscillated between two positions: John Ward- Perkins argued that by the mid-first century AD all ‘principal’ quarries were ‘nationalized’, i.e. put under imperial control and leased out to contractors for rent; the quarries were a source of revenue for the emperor, the distribution of its output driven by commercial factors.1 Clayton Fant, however, offered a different view: the emperor monopolized the use of coloured and white marbles and their sources not for profit, but for ‘prestige’, consolidating his position as unchallenged patron and benefactor of the empire.

    A VOTIVE ALTAR DISCOVERED IN THE LEGIONARY CAMP OF APULUM Abstract: This paper presents the latest epigraphic discovery in the camp of XIIIth Legion Gemina, represented by a votive altar dedicated to Iupiter Optimus Maximus, the protective Genius of the centuria, by a non-commissioned officer with the rank of optio named M(arcus) Atti(us) Valens. It was identified in situ, next to the entrance in contubernium, more precisely next to one of the rooms used to deposit the weapons (arma). This room was closely to the apartment of the centurion. Considering the chiselling manner of the letters, which are not carefully executed, and the context of the discovery, which is the Radu Ota last level of Roman habitation, the votive monument is chronologically dated National Museum of Union Alba Iulia during a period of the military anarchy as more precise data is forthcoming. This military deity is mentioned in Potaissa by the texts Cristian Titus Florescu of two votive altars1.
