EYSTONE HEIGHTS – At 14-years-of-age, Sage Pridemore has had anything but a normal life like other children his age. K Instead, the Keystone Heights youth, who lives on the outskirts of Putnam County, was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypo-Plastic Left Heart Syndrome. “It means he was born with half of a heart,” said his mom, Candice Pridemore. For Sage, that diagnosis has meant three open heart surgeries – one when he was a week-old, the second at three months and the third at three years. The last procedure he had was Fontan sur- gery, where surgeons re-routed the blood flow from Sage’s lower body to the lungs by connecting the inferior vena cava to the pul- monary artery. Other complications have risen for Sage since the Fontan sur- gery, including him having high pressures in his heart, which causes leaks in the lymphatic system into and on the lungs. From this complication, Sage has developed plastic bronchitis. Plastic bronchitis is a condition where buildup in someone’s airways forms into casts that replicate the shape of the bronchial tree (the paths of airways in your lungs that look similar to tree branches), according to published reports. The casts are made of mucus and cellular materials and have a soft, rubbery consistency. “It needs to be treated, particularly since there’s a risk of lung damage and the fluid becoming infected, as well as compromised breathing,” said Candice Pridemore. “As time goes by, they will continue to get larger and larger. The only cure for him is a heart transplant. If he has a cast, all his activities stop until he can cough it up.” Besides surgeries, Sage has had multiple heart caths, EKGs and echo cardiograms. He has been on a heart transplant list now for 89 days as of Saturday and has been an in-patient at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital for 31 days. “Because he has a weakened immune system, sometimes the average cold will involve a hospital stay,” said Candice Pridemore. “The average kiddo would be able to fight the infection at home, but for Sage it would most likely mean inpatient.” Despite all the things their son has had to overcome in his young life, Candice and Bryan Pridemore have made it their mis- sion to treat their son as normal as possible. “He loves to fish and play sports and hang out with his friends,” said Bryan Pridemore. “We’ve also been lucky enough to have the parents of his friends be vigilant and Sage supporters. We feel confident that Sage is safe and cared for while he’s with his friends.” Sage was born Jan. 26, 2007, in Lakeland. He has two older sib- lings – a brother, Jacoby, and his wife, Brooke, and their son, Jensen; and a sister, Jade, and her daughter, Blakely. “He is the best uncle to Jensen and Blakely,” Sage’s mother said, smiling. Candice Pridemore feels blessed by the amount of love and support family and friends have showered them while waiting to
