ENGLISH EASTER TRADITIONS 1.EASTER DAY: Easter is an important Christian festival celebrating the resurrection (rebirth) of Jesus Christ. Easter is always on Sundays and it is in Spring. In Great Britain, there are many different customs and many funny symbols for celebrating Easter. The wish (augurio) for this day is “Happy Easter” 2.EASTER BUNNY : The symbol of Easter is an Easter Bunny, a happy rabbit with a basket with mini chocolate eggs. Children believe that he brings the eggs for them on Easter Sunday. For these reasons chocolate bunnies are very popular in Great Britain. 3. EASTER EGG “TREASURE HUNT” (caccia al tesoro) : At Easter, English people organise treasure hunts. On Easter Sunday morning kids go out and look for (cercano) the eggs. Their parents hide (nascondono) the eggs at home or in the garden; when the children find the eggs, they put them in a basket and their parents give them a big chocolate egg. It is a very exciting eggs hunt. 4. EASTER BASKET : Kids take (portano) a basket to collect their eggs during the Easter eggs hunt. 5. EGG PAINTING (pittura) : English children like colouring and decorating boiled eggs for Easter. Eggs are very important because they mean (significano/rappresentano) Spring and new life. 6. EASTER EGG TREE : Kids and parents make a very nice decoration: they put branches (rami) in a vase nd they hang (appendono) eggs on them. If they have a tree in the garden they hang Easter eggs on the tree. 7. EASTER EGG ROLLING : Another Easter tradition is “egg rolling”. People decorate eggs with different colours. Then they take the eggs to the top of a hill (collina) and the eggs roll down. The first egg that get to the foot of the hill is the winner. 8. GOOD FRIDAY (Venerdì Santo) AND “HOT CROSS BUNS”: In this day people eat “hot cross buns”. These are small loaves (pagnotte) of sweet bread, with fruit and spices and they have a cross of sugar on top. Tradition says that children who eat “hot cross buns” have good luck. 9. EASTER BONNET (cuffia) : At Easter boys and girls use to wear special hats. They are called “bonnets”. The bonnets are always new. In some British primary schools they organise an “ Easter- bonnet parade (sfilata)” , where the best and the strangest bonnet wins a prize. Easter bonnets come from Asian traditions of wearing flowers on a hat to celebrating Spring. 10. MAUNDY THURSDAY (Giovedì Santo) : In Britain, the Thursday before Easter Sunday, the Queen goes to Westminster Abbey and she gives maundy money (denaro santo) to some poor people. Happy Easter to you and to your families!!! Teacher Luana SCUOLA PRIMARIA SCURCOLA MARSICANA - CLASSE 5^ C Docente: PAOLA BUCCIMAZZA INGLESE - mercoledì 8 Aprile 1.
