VOLUME 10, NUMBER 22, NOVEMBER 15th, 2002 Min. Bethel Toured Cays and South Abaco Minister of Health Was Interested in Clinics, Dumps and Cemeteries The Hon. Dr. Marcus Bethel, Minister of Health, visited Abaco on November 7. He toured Great Guana Cay, Man-O-War Cay, Elbow Cay and Sandy Point to see first hand the clinics in each town, the dumps on each of the cays and the cemetery in Guana Cay. He spent considerable time on Guana Cay. The clinic there is quite small and in need of repairs. Many Guana Cay residents feel that the cemetery is nearly outgrown and a new location must be found. Dr. Bethel then went to the proposed site for the garbage dump on the northwest end of the island. This controversial piece of prop- erty is approximately 20 acres and goes sea to sea. It is under consideration for a land fill dump with the garbage being burned before being buried in a landfill trench. However, the property is choice land on an island with very little government land. It is estimated that only five to eight acres of the 20 acre parcel may be useful as much of the acreage is a mangrove swamp now used by bonefish fisherermen. Councillor Glen Laing escorted Dr. Bethel. A brief meeting was held in the government office with Mr. Johnny Roberts giving informa- tion on the garbage handling situation. Dr. Bethel then toured the Man-O-War clinic which he found is very well equipped. The Hon. Dr. Marcus Bethel, Minister of Health, visited Abaco on November 7 to see the public health facilities within his portfolio on He was given a tour of the dump site where Great Guana Cay, Man-O-War Cay, Elbow Cay and Sandy Point. He spoke with local government officers and discussed some of the problems being dealt with locally. He is shown here on Guana Cay with Mr. Glenn Laing, Council member from Guana Cay.
