    The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension Introduction History of Martyrologies The Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church. The official Latin version of the Martyrology contains a short liturgical service the daily reading of the Martyrology’s list of saints for each day. The oldest surviving martyologies are the lists of martyrs and bishops from the fourth-century Roman Church. The martyrology wrongly attributed to St. Jerome was written in Ital in the second half of the fifth century, but all the surviving versions of it come from Gaul. It is a simple martyrology, which lists the name of the saint and the date and place of death of the saint. Historical martyrologies give a brief history of the saints. In the eighth and ninth centuries, St. Bede, Rhabanus Maurus, and Usuard all wrote historical martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology, based primarily on Usuard’s, was first published in 1583, and the edition of 1584 was made normative in the Roman rite by Gregory XIII. The post-Vatican II revision appeared first in 2001. A revision that corrected typographical errors and added 117 people canonized by Pope John Paul II between 2001 and 2004, appeared in 2005.1 The Purpose and Principles of This Martyology The primary purpose of this martyrology is to provide an historically accurate text for liturgical use at the monastery, where each day after noon prayer it is customary to read the martyrology for the following day. Some things in this martyrology are specific to the Monastery of the Ascension: namesdays of the members of the community, anniversaries of members of the community who have died, a few references to specific events or saints of local interest.

    Cuyahoga Heights 2018 Centennial Early Families An 1870 view of the Palmer Sawmill located by the Eight Mile Lock 39 Cuyahoga Heights 2018 Centennial Leavitt and Barbara Radway 40 Cuyahoga Heights 2018 Centennial Early Families by Laura Nicklas Hine Richard Radway — The Richard Radway family came here in 1841 from Vermont. They bought a farm on Independence Road, now East 49th Street in what is now Cuyahoga Heights. They were the largest farmland owners in our village. Eventually, they had two farms in Cuyahoga Heights. The first farm was the Leavitt Radway farm, and was on the west side of East 49th Street, halfway between the railroad tracks and Canal Road. The second was the Richard Radway farm. It was on the east side of East 49th Street and encompassed the land where the sewage plant is located, starting at Canal Road and heading north up to the railroad tracks. In 1874, the Radway family owned the most land in what is the Village of Cuyahoga Heights today, and they continued to do so until 1903. In 1919, total land owned by descendants of Richard Radway was 131 acres. Radway is an Anglo-Saxon surname found in church records before England was a country. The Anglo and Saxons were Teutonic tribes that started coming to what is now England, Wales and Scotland in about 400 A.D. Radway families are found in these countries plus Ireland. The family was seated as Lords of the Manor in Somerset and in the town of Radway in Warwickshire during the 1000s. Henry de Radeweie had an estate in Somerset in 1205.

His wife, Lilly, was born in 1864 in Illinois. Children: Irene was born in 1889 in Minnesota; Vianna (sp?) was born in 1892 in Minnesota; Ina was born in 1893 in Minnesota. Mr. Abbott was a farmer who moved directly to Todd Township in the spring of 1886. On June 18, 1895, B. F. Wright enumerated the Abbotts 39th in Todd Township. Cornelius A. Abbott was born in 1834 in Indiana. He was a carpenter and moved to Minnesota in February, 1885, and to the Hubbard Enumeration District in May 1895. On June 5, 1895, E. R. Hinds enumerated Corneluis 27th in Hubbard. George Abbot was born in 1817 in Tennessee. His wife, Abigail, was born in 1837 in Canada. The 1885 state census lists him as a Union veteran, distinguishing him from many of his Tennessee relations. Children: Moses was born in 1860 in Minnesota; Angelina was born in 1872 in Minnesota; George was born in 1877 in Minnesota; and Margaret was born in 1881 in Minnesota.
