It brings me so much joy to announce to you all that this is our fourth edition of Witches; we’ve been throwing witchy magic your way for a whole calendar year. That’s right, four editions crammed full of spells, recipes, top tips and horoscopes, all for you to enjoy. I started this journey a year ago, a bright-eyed student wanting to create an outlet for a community which is often lacking in representation. My greatest hope is that you feel as though Witches has completed its task. Based on nearly 20,000 of you following the magazine’s journey on Instagram, I’d say we’ve definitely made a strong start! There is always progress to be made though. On a personal note, I am due to graduate in July 2020. For the past three years, I’ve put my heart and soul into a Journalism Degree in Falmouth, Cornwall, UK. I couldn’t be happier to have made it until the end, but with this, comes a very loaded question; what next? There’s a huge level of pressure attached to graduation. All eyes are on you to have a promising game plan, a next step, a large, calculated leap into the next unknown chapter. My message to you all, regardless of whether you’re graduating, starting a new chapter, or opting to stick with what you’ve got, is that it’s okay to not have it all planned out. Life has a habit of throwing opportunities in your direction, if you’re brave enough to take them. I believe that we make our own luck. We set intentions, we manifest, we meditate, we visualise. It’s in our nature as witches. My words of (little) wisdom, are as follows: it’s okay to not have a plan. It’s okay to bide your time, to weigh up your options before you jump. In this new decade, and new spring-time season, allow yourself time to breathe, refocus, realign and process. Chances are, you’ll notice something new on the horizon if you allow yourself the chance to spot it. Originally, the Latin noun magus (from the Greek mágos) desig- nated the members of the spiritualist-priest class, and later came to designate ‘clairvoyant, sorcerer’ and in a pejorative sense also ‘magician, trickster’. Thus the first meaning of the word ‘magic’ was the teachings of the Magi, i.e. the arts of acquiring supernatu- ral powers and force, while later it was also applied disparagingly to fraudulent witchcraft.1 The aforementioned etymological explana- tions indicate three important factors in the development of the notion ‘magic’: 1) magic as a science and the knowledge of divine forces in nature and in the process of creation (magia naturalis), 2) magic as the exercise of such knowledge in prophecies, oracles and conjuring, and 3) deceitful witchcraft.

Ph.D. Introduction Nichole Yalsovac Prophetic revelation, or Divination, dates back to the earliest known times of human existence. The oldest of all Chinese texts, the I Ching, is a divination system older than recorded history. James Legge says in his translation of I Ching: Book Of Changes (1996), “The desire to seek answers and to predict the future is as old as civilization itself.” Mankind has always had a desire to know what the future holds. Evidence shows that methods of divination, also known as fortune telling, were used by the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians and the Sumerians (who resided in what is now Iraq) as early as six‐thousand years ago. Divination was originally a device of royalty and has often been an essential part of religion and medicine. Significant leaders and royalty often employed priests, doctors, soothsayers and astrologers as advisers and consultants on what the future held. Every civilization has held a belief in at least some type of divination. The point of divination in the ancient world was to ascertain the will of the gods. In fact, divination is so called because it is assumed to be a gift of the divine, a gift from the gods. This gift of obtaining knowledge of the unknown uses a wide range of tools and an enormous variety of techniques, as we will see in this course. No matter which method is used, the most imperative aspect is the interpretation and presentation of what is seen.

Other Methods of Divination There are so many other methods of divination that it is almost impossi- ble to list them, except, perhaps, a few that are labeled with a specific name. Most of them did not require any apparatus or technical expertise and could be practiced almost anywhere. The catalogues compiled by scholars are rather tedious to read, but since this is a chapter of cul- tural history—and one that provides some curious insights into human psychology—a brief survey seems appropriate.
