Bourke & Outback NSW 6 Day Tour Itinerary Monday 21 to Saturday 26 June 2021

DAY 1: Monday 21 June to

Welcome to our 6-day tour to Bourke in the north west of – today as we make our way west we will visit the Royal Flying Doctor Base Education Centre to discover the lifesaving work the RFDS does for people who live, work and travel in remote . From here we check into our motel and relax before we can all enjoy our welcome dinner.

DAY 2: Tuesday 22 June Dubbo to Bourke

Our first stop today is in Nyngan at theMid-State Shearing Shed Museum that was built in a disused railway goods shed by a group of retired shearers and the people of Nyngan. The collection and displays describe the important contribution that the shearing industry made and continues to make in Nyngan. Back on the coach we now head to . Our visit and lunch stop is in Cobar at The Great Cobar Heritage Centre, the former Administration Building (circa 1910) of the Great Cobar Copper Mine. The centre captures the essence of Cobar, housing an outstanding collection of exhibits which date from the early 1870s to the present day. Inside the amazing collection of artefacts reveals the extraordinary diverse local heritage. Through the exhibits the rich history inherent in the everyday life of Cobar’s pioneers, and the culture of making do, becomes apparent. This afternoon we complete the last leg of our journey, as we make our way to Bourke and check into our accommodation for the next 3 nights.

DAY 3: Wednesday 23 June Discovering Bourke

Today we take a look at Bourke. There are some wonderful historic buildings here such as The Old London Bank (1888) Courthouse (1900) Post office (1880) and Post Office Hotel (1888). At the corner of Mitchell and Wilson Streets is the Carriers Arms Inn, frequented by Henry Lawson in the early 1890s and mentioned in some of his stories. We visit the Back of Bourke Exhibition as well as the Bourke Cemetery to see the grave of Fred Hollows. We join the Paddleboat Jandra and recapture the romance of the old river-steamers, as we cruise along the quiet waters of the Darling River. Today we will also have some free time to wander at our leisure in Bourke.

DAY 4: Thursday 24 June Dunlop Station

This morning we travel to Louth and visit Trilby Station. The Station was once a part of the legendary million acre Dunlop Station, and the first station in the world to complete a sheep shearing by mechanical means in 1888. Trilby Station is 320,000 acres these days, running approximately 24,000 Merino sheep and an extensive goat enterprise. Our visit will not only include morning tea, and a tour of the shearing shed where we hear all about the station’s history, but we will also have lunch here. We return to Bourke and have a relaxing afternoon, as tonight we have a wonderful dining experience, making our way to Kidman Camp. A highlight of our visit to Bourke, we enjoy a slow cooked campfire dinner and we’ll be entertained around the campfire by a great line-up of original Australian bush music, poetry and storytelling.

DAY 5: Friday 25 June Bourke to Narrabri

Leaving Bourke, we re-trace our steps to Walgett then arrive in Wee Waa for a visit to the Namoi Echo Museum. Opened in 2006, the Museum is run by the Wee Waa Historical Society and is home to many fascinating items and machinery pertaining to the history and culture of the district. The CSIRO Australia Telescope Compact Array is a world leading instrument for radio astronomy and deep views into the universe. Here we enjoy panoramic views of the antennas and wander through indoor and outdoor astronomy exhibits. Following our visit, we arrive in Narrabri and check into our motel for the night.

DAY 6: Saturday 26 June Return to Sydney

Packing our bags, we board the coach and commence our journey home. We pass through Gunnedah and arrive late morning at Bobs Shed in Quirindi. Take a stroll down memory lane and look through an extensive collection of authentic 40’s and 50’s items, admire the collection of historic pub items in the Railway Hotel and visit Peter Brocks World – an amazing tribute to an Australian icon. Bob will tell us stories relating to the collection and this will also be our lunch venue today. From here we start our return journey and head for home. We have a full afternoon of travelling back to Sydney and will arrive home late in the afternoon.
