  • Climatic Control of Arenites: an Example from the Carnian (Upper Triassic) of the Dolomites (Northern Italy) R
Geophysical Research Abstracts, Vol. 8, 08628, 2006 SRef-ID: 1607-7962/gra/EGU06-A-08628 © European Geosciences Union 2006 Climatic control of arenites: an example from the Carnian (Upper Triassic) of the Dolomites (northern Italy) R. Meneguolo (1), N. Preto (1), A. Breda (1) (1) Università degli Studi di Padova - Dip.to di Geologia, Paleontologia e Geofisica, Via Giotto, 1. 35137, Padova (Italy) Sedimentology and arenite composition have been investigated in the Upper Triassic of the Dolomites (Southern Alps, northern Italy). The siliciclastics of two superim- posed mixed terrigenous-carbonate, Carnian formations have been studied. The tran- sitional to shallow-marine Heiligkreuz Formation of the Dolomites records at least 8 high-frequency sedimentary cycles. The siliciclastic portions of each cycle are de- posited in a shallow-water subtidal setting, always including high-density flow de- posits in the lower part. Composition of arenites displays a short-term trend from lithic to quartzose. Mixed, high frequency cycles can be recognized also within the continental to transitional Travenanzes Formation. Arenites deposits are found in spo- radic, channelized bodies, and in their related overbank sheets, representing flooding events of ephemeral streams. Fluctuations in the composition of arenites can still be recognized, with a strong quartz enrichment in the upper part of each cycle. Siliciclastic constituents (quartz, feldspars and lithics of volcaniclastic origin) remain constant through time. Volcaniclastic grains may be either substantially unaltered or strongly altered, with altered volcaniclastic grains prevailing in the more quartzose facies. An upwards increase in quartz content is observed also through the whole suc- cession. An influence of tectonics and/or source area changes on the compositional variations of arenites can be excluded.

  • An Early Cretaceous Astropectinid (Echinodermata, Asteroidea)

Asterozoans are free living, star-shaped echinoderms which are important components of benthic marine faunas worldwide. Their fossil record is, however, poor and fragmentary, probably due to dissarticulation of ossicles. In particular, fossil asteroids are infrequent in South America. A new species of starfish is reported from the early Valanginian of the Mulichinco Formation, Neuquén Basin, in the context of a shallow-water, storm-dominated shoreface environment. The specimen belongs to the Astropectinidae, and was assigned to a new species within the genus Tethyaster Sladen, T. antares sp. nov., characterized by a R:r ratio of 2.43:1, rectangular marginals wider in the interbrachial angles, infero- marginals (28 pairs along a median arc) with slightly convex profile and flat spines (one per ossicle in the interbrachials and two per ossicle in the arms).

  • Exine Morphology and Ultrastructure of Duplicisporites from the Triassic of Italy
Grana 44: 337–342, 2005 Exine morphology and ultrastructure of Duplicisporites from the Triassic of Italy NATALIA E. ZAVIALOVA and GUIDO ROGHI Zavialova, N. E. & Roghi, G. 2005. Exine morphology and ultrastructure of Duplicisporites from the Triassic of Italy. – Grana 44: 337–342. ISSN 0017-3134. A morphological study of dispersed Circumpolles pollen grains from the Upper Triassic of the Southern Alps has been initiated with the genus Duplicisporites. Individual pollen grains were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Seen with SEM the pollen surface is finely verrucate with low verrucae of different sizes. A sub-equatorial continuous rimula is clearly visible. The proximal trilete scar is small and indistinct. TEM images reveal a bi-layered exine. The ectexine is formed by numerous small, closely packed, granulae subdivided by irregularly-spaced cavities. In the region of the subequatorial canal, the ectexine becomes thinner, about 1/3 of the usual thickness. At places, the ectexine is slightly separated from the underlying endexine. The endexine is prominent and significantly darker than the ectexine. It is homogeneous and of constant thickness. On the basis of its older age, with respect to Classopollis, the present ultrastructural dataset provides information on the possible origin of cheirolepidiaceous-type morphology. Natalia E.
