Brandt Cara Kiernan Fallon Forever Young: The Social Transformation of Aging in America Since 1900 Abstract Between 1900 and 2000, life expectancy in the United States increased by three decades—from 47 to 77—a greater increase in one century than in the entire previous history of humankind. With it, the population over sixty-five increased from four to twelve percent of the United States population, and those over eighty-five became the fastest-growing demographic group. While growing old has become increasingly common, the processes of aging have not become welcomed or accepted.

He established the first primate physiology laboratory in the United States and his original investigations in neurophysiology included seminal studies on functional localization in the cerebral cortex. He was also renowned as a bibliophile and scholar of medical history and was a leading advocate for the integration of science and the humanities (Figure 1). Figure 1: John Farquhar Fulton (1899-1960) John Fulton was born in St Paul, Minnesota where his father was a prominent ophthalmologist and one of the founders of the University of Minnesota Medical School (Denny-Brown, 1960). From his earliest years, he had a love of books. Whilst a high school student, he secured a job as a stack boy at the St Paul public library. Hospital Parc Taulí, Sabadell, Barcelona, Spain This study has not been presented at the SEN’ s Annual Meeting or at any other meeting or congress, nor has it been published in another journal. ABSTRACT John F. Fulton was one of the leading figures internationally in neurophysiology and history of medicine between the early 1930s and 1960. Working at the laboratory of physiology at Yale University, he was a pioneer in the study of the functional localisation of the cerebral cortex in primates. His 1938 treatise Physiology of the nervous system was a milestone in the development of neurophysiology. Fulton created a working environment at the laboratory where training was provided to important scientists who later directed centres in their home countries. He stood out as speaker, editor, communicator, and member of several committees, and established many links with foreign figures, including the Spanish physicians José Manuel Rodríguez Delgado, Jaume Pi-Sunyer, Rafael Lorente de Nó, Josep Trueta, and Francisco Guerra. Fulton was a student of Charles Sherrington and Harvey Cushing and showed a special interest for the world of Santiago Ramón y Cajal. A great bibliophile, he dedicated the last years of his short but intense life to the history of medicine, publishing studies on Michael Servetus. KEYWORDS John F.     TÜRK TARIH KURUMU BELLETEN Cilt: XLVII Nisan 1983 Say~ : 186 GEORGE SARTON AND THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE AYDIN SAYILI Professor of the History of Science, Director, Atatürk Culture Center Sarton, who was born in 1884* in Belgium, came to the United States in 1915. He gave a few lectures and courses during his first years in America, and in 1918 he became associated with the Carnegie Institution of Washington. He had already founded Isis in 1912, while in Belgium, and although its publication was interrupted during the four years of World War I, it began to reappear in the postwar years when Sarton established himself in the United States. Follow- ing a meeting of the American Historical Association in Boston, in December 1923, David Eugene Smith, Lynn Thorndike, and a group of other members organized the American History of Science Society, incorporating it in January 1924.
