FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE On The Trail of Armenian Women’s History By Sona Zeitlian GLENDALE, CA On Friday, June 13, 2014, at 7pm, Sona Zeitlian will present her newly published book On the Trail of Armenian Women’s History at the Glendale Central Library Auditorium, 222 East Harvard Street in Glendale. The presentation is in Armenian. Admission is free. Library visitors receive 3 hours FREE parking across the street at The Market Place parking structure with validation at the Loan Desk. On the Trail of Armenian Women’s History is a comprehensive study of Armenian women from goddesses to modern times, reflecting national values and the prominence of women. It examines the role of women in the cultural renaissance of Constantinople and Tbilisi, focusing on the writings of prominent female authors, and discusses the organization and impact of the first women’s movement. The book also examines the effects of the Armenian Genocide and the mass deportations of women and children. The resilience of survivors and women’s organizations’ sustained relief efforts to meet the multiple challenges draw from unpublished witness accounts and extensive research. Finally, the challenges of diasporan Armenian women in modern times is examined. The study has also compiled maps and photographs, some of which belong to personal collections and appear in print for the first time. The book was granted the Kevork Melidinetsi 2013 Award. Sona Zeitlian was born in Cairo, Egypt. She is an award winning educator and author with a long career of community activism and leadership in Cairo, Beirut, and Los Angeles. Her writings have focused on Armenian mythology and legends, folk tales based on the Armenian oral tradition, Armenian women's intellectual history, the rights movement and current issues of Armenian women in the homeland and diaspora. -

In different rural communities of Shirak region nowadays live representatives of the Armenain generation who have immigrated from Western Armenia and bear unique musical specimen. They are folk and national multi-genre song types and musical instrumental works. In the article we have touched upon 100 folk songs compiled from the folkloristic material organized in about 20 communities of Shirak region in 2015 March-April, that not only give us common notion of the song tradition of our compatriots migrated from Moush and Alashkert, in 2015, but they also certify that the tradition of folk song creativity is alive and coexists next to the very different modern cultural manifestations. Keywords: Ethnomusicology, Musical folklore, Shirak regon, traditional music, folk song, study, revival. The musical heritage of Shirak of the 19th-20th centuries has its unique place and role in the development of the Armenian national music. The rich musical folklore, imbued with the genre- stylistic features of the musical dialects of Western Armenia, became the basis for the unprecedented development of the professional music of the oral tradition and the creation of a valuable heritage. From the second half of the 19th century Armenian philologists and musician-folklorists became interested in the flourishing art of the Armenian bards and folk music players of Shirak. -

The Calouste Gulbenkian Library is one of the Patriarchate’s five intellectual resource centers. Plans for its establishment began in 1925 as a tribute to Patriarch Yeghishe I Tourian to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Culture Studies Armenian Folia Anglistika Armenian Culture from the Semiotic Perspective Armine Matevosyan, Manana Dalalyan Yerevan State University Abstract The present paper goes along the lines of Semiotics, a branch of linguistics. It studies the system of signs which takes the form of words, images, sounds, gestures and objects. Through the usage of signs we represent the linguocultural aspect of our knowledge, ethnic traditions and folklore. The interest we take in the paper is the study of signs and symbols in Armenian culture. Culture, including miniature paining, singing, dancing, architecture and cuisine, may involve any sphere of Armenian identity. Signs and symbols that constitute language and culture are constructed through verbal and non-verbal interactions and are arbitrary. The purpose of our analysis is to specify what why, whom questions in a specific context of situation, as well as in a large context of culture, such as social community, media and communication. Key words: semiotics, culture, communication through signs, cultural identity, science of signs, cuisine, visual signs. Introduction Semiotics is the study of signs and sign using behavior. It was defined by Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure as the study of “the life of signs within society”. It is an academic field dedicated to the study of signs. A sign (for example, the word ship) may be recognized by the presence of its constituent parts, which in semiotic theories is based on the signifier (the container, or the sign's perceptible form: the letters s-h-i-p) and the signified (the meaning or content; the notion conveyed by the signifier: a vessel of considerable size for deepwater navigation). -

Beginning on April 24, 1915, with the arrest of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople by Ottoman au- thorities, one and a half million Armenians were deported, massacred, or marched to their deaths in a campaign of ex- termination. We honor the victims of the Meds Yeghern so that the horrors of what happened are never lost to history. And we remember so that we remain ever-vigilant against the corrosive influence of hate in all its forms. Of those who survived, most were forced to find new homes and new lives around the world, including in the A large crowd turned out for the Boston April 24 commemoration. (See story inside) United States. With strength and resilience, the Armenian people survived and rebuilt their community. Over the decades Armenian immigrants have enriched the United States in countless ways, but they have never forgotten the tragic history that brought so many of their ancestors to our Armenia Delighted with US shores. We honor their story. We see that pain. We affirm the history. We do this not to cast blame but to ensure that what happened is never repeated. Recognition of Genocide Today, as we mourn what was lost, let us also turn our eyes to the future — toward the world that we wish to build trauma of the 106 year-old Genocide. -

Taline Papazian 81 THE ARMENIAN VOLUNTEER MOVEMENT DURING WWI AS GROUNDWORK FOR POLITICAL SOVEREIGNTY: SOME PRELIMINARY INSIGHTS Taline Papazian The current article is part of a new research focusing on the interaction between armed conflicts and political cognitions among Armenians from the end of the 19th century up to the foundation of contemporary Republic of Armenia1. It also holds a comparative dimension with the same research question for the Jewish case, under the same time period. The question will be to ask whether physical mass violence has been conducive to representations of national sovereignty, and if so, what was the content of that concept for political and military leaders during WWI: territorial? demographic? political? military? Being at a very early stage of my research, I will not attempt at bringing an answer to this question here. What I will do instead is lay the hypothesis and give the factual background retrieved from secondary sources necessary to future analysis for the period of WWI. Thus, the following is no attempt at a comprehensive review of the volunteer movement during WWI, but very modestly a summary of the elements that will be used in the later analysis. Temptative design of a number of arguments that will be investigated in the future research will be sketched here. I should also add that, parallel to the volunteer movements of Transcaucasia, I have started studying the same issues regarding the Armenian Legion formed under the auspices of Boghos Nubar Pasha2. These two, mostly parallel –although they sometimes met and joined efforts- episodes are in themselves proof of the plurality of political conceptions and objectives among Armenians at the time of WWI, something we will witness even more glaringly with the “double delegation” at the negotiation tables of the Allies between 1918 and 1921.
