[Read June 20,1861.1 BOTANISTBappear to be unanimous in bringing together the group of orders designated by Endlicher under the name of Colunanifra, by Brongniart under that of Mnlvoidecc, and included by Lindley in his alliance of Malvales. They are characterized generally by the valvate calyx, contorted petals, monadelphous or indefinite stamens, and syncarpous ovary; and as to habit, by alternate stipulate leaves often toothed or palmately lobed, and a great ten- dency to stellate pubescence. The subdivision of the group, how- ever, has been the object of much diversity of opinion. Whilst A. de St. Hilaire proposed the adoption of two orders only, Mal- vaceze and Tiliacee, the greater number of modern botanists have admitted one or two intermediate ones, Sterculiaceae and Buett- neriaceze ; whilst others enumerate as many as nine distinct orders, Malvaceae, Bombaceae, Sterculiaceae, Lasiopetaleae, Buettneriaceae, Hermanniaceae, Dombeyacee, Tiliaces, and Elseocarpes. The Tiliacele, including Elaeocarpez, characterized by indefinite free or nearly free stamens with 2-celled anthers, have been the subject of a previous paper (Linn. Journ. v. 2nd Suppl.). I have now to offer a few observations on the Malvacese as understood by St. Hihire, characterized by monadelphous stamens, or, in the very few cases where they are free, definite and alternate with the sepals. There is so much intercommunity, both in habit and character, in the various orders or tribes of this group, that the proposal for their union, although not generally adopted, was perhaps the most in conformity to the general principles of the natural method ; yet there is one character, derived from the one- or two-celled anthers, which seems to divide them into two large groups, Mal- vaceae and Sterculiaces, accurately limited (with the exception of a very few species, whose aities are, by other characters, placed beyond doubt) and not unnatural ; and this classification we pro- pose to adopt, in common with the majority of modern botanists, although not with the usual limits. For Bombacee, usually classed as a tribe of Sterculiaceae, have the one-celled an- thers of Malvaceae; and, in their accessory characters, their soft wood, their stamina1 arrangement, the cotton within the cap- sule of SO many of them, show a nearer connexion with some of LINN. PR0C.-BOTANY, VOL. VI. H 98 ME. BENTHAM ON MALVAOEE the arborescent Hibisces than with any true Sterculiaceous ge- nera. It is true that the smooth pollen-grains have been adduced as a positive character connecting them rather with Stereuliace= than with Malvaceae, but its constancy is very far from being proved. The pollen has only been described in a very few genera. As far as my observation goes, it is always tuberculate or murkate in what are considered as true Malvaceae ; but so I have found it also in Xmpea, in several Helicteroid genera, &c.; so that, in the present state of our knowledge, the pollen cannot be taken as furnishing an ordinal character. Although the one-celled anthers are thus taken by common consent as the essential characters of Malvacee, on account of its remarlcable constancy in genera otherwise related, yet it is of very little organic importance. It is not occasioned by the constant abortion of one cell, but by the two cells, placed end to end as in many distinctly two-celled genera, but confluent from a very early period. In many genera no trace of any transverse partition or even contraction can, I believe, be traced at any age ; in others, in the young bud, there is a distinct contraction in the middle of the anther, showing its normal structure. Helicteres, which on many accounts belongs undoubtedly to Sterculiaceae, shows, in regard to the anthers, the passage from the Malvaceous confluent anthers of H. pentasha, &c., to the Sterculiaceous distinctly two- celled ones of IF. myust$olia, &c. ; but here the contraction in the young anthers may, I believe, be found in all the species. MALVACIC~have been distributed into tribes, and the genera circumscribed with so much tact and ability by A. Gray, that I have little to propose in modification of his arrangement, except the addition of one or two genera which had not come under his observation, and the annexation of Bombace=,-in consequence of which I should propose reducing some of his tribes to the rank of subtribes, as will appear in the following enumeration of tribes and genera. It's certainly been a while since the last one. I haven't answered many (or any) letters in that time either. The .."... reason is basically that my wife passed away at the start of the year. I now have two sons (& myself) to look after and I just don't get the time for native plants. I also found native plants were a refuge during my wife's illness. Now I have lost my interest in the plants and I feel a break of a year or two will do me good. Of course I'll keep my garden going (albeit full of weed;) .I'll also k&ep interesting planis growing (given to me now 'that I no longer propagate them) so. -please call in if anyone is passing through. ,' ... I . I will keep the study group going, however I am running out of + material. I am trying to cover the Rulingeas and Thomasias. This will take t while. I am collecting material and information at present (thanks mainly tc \ Gwenda McDonald and Dennis Margan). .I I have had visits by Dennis Margan, Bruce and Thelma Wallace and ' Ian Evans. Dennis seems to regularly travel up and down the coast. I'm not sure if he's looking for Goodenias or it's actually part of his work. - (Dennis psobably doesn't know the difference). Bruce and Thelma called in after a visit to Burrendong Arboretum.

    FINAL REPORT 2019 Canna Reserve This project was supported by NACC NRM and the Shire of Morawa through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program Canna Reserve BioBlitz 2019 Weaving and wonder in the wilderness! The weather may have been hot and dry, but that didn’t stop everyone having fun and learning about the rich biodiversity and conservation value of the wonderful Canna Reserve during the highly successful 2019 BioBlitz. On the 14 - 15 September 2019, NACC NRM together with support from Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions and the Shire of Morawa, hosted their third BioBlitz at the Canna Reserve in the Shire of Morawa. Fifty professional biologists and citizen scientists attended the event with people travelling from near and far including Morawa, Perenjori, Geraldton and Perth. After an introduction and Acknowledgement of Country from organisers Jessica Stingemore and Jarna Kendle, the BioBlitz kicked off with participants separating into four teams and heading out to explore Canna Reserve with the goal of identifying as many plants, birds, invertebrates, and vertebrates as possible in a 24 hr period. David Knowles of Spineless Wonders led the invertebrate survey with assistance from, OAM recipient Allen Sundholm, Jenny Borger of Jenny Borger Botanical Consultancy led the plant team, BirdLife Midwest member Alice Bishop guided the bird survey team and David Pongracz from Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions ran the vertebrate surveys with assistance from volunteer Corin Desmond. The BioBlitz got off to a great start identifying 80 plant species during the first survey with many more species to come and even a new orchid find for the reserve.

  • Northwest Highlands Bioregion Technical Descriptions
    Department of Environment and Science Regional Ecosystem Technical Descriptions Technical descriptions provide a detailed description of the full range in structure and floristic composition of regional ecosystems (e.g. 1.1.10) and their component vegetation communities (e.g. 1.11.10a, 1.11.10b). The descriptions are compiled using site survey data from the Queensland Herbarium’s CORVEG database. Distribution maps, representative images (if available) and the pre-clearing and remnant area (hectares) of each vegetation community derived from the regional ecosystem mapping (spatial) data are included. The technical descriptions should be used in conjunction with the fields from the regional ecosystem description database (REDD) for a full description of the regional ecosystem. Quantitative site data from relatively undisturbed sites are extracted from CORVEG and summarized to provide information specific to each vegetation community. Technical descriptions include the attributes: tree canopy height and cover and native plant species composition of the predominant layer, which are used to assess the remnant status of vegetation under the Vegetation Management Act 1999. However, as technical descriptions reflect the full range in structure and floristic composition across the climatic, natural disturbance and geographic range of the regional ecosystem, local reference sites should be used where possible (Neldner et al. 2005 section 3.3.3). The technical descriptions are subject to review and are updated as additional data becomes available.

Dioecy is a rare breeding system among the angiosperms (approximately 6% of all flowering plants) while hermaphroditism (having male and female function present within each flower) is predominant. Dioecious angiosperms may be rare because the transitions to dioecy have been recent or because dioecious angiosperms experience decreased diversification rates (speciation minus extinction) compared to plants with other breeding systems.

Heucke, Central Australian Camel Industry Association and R. Dance, Pastoral Division, Alice Springs BACKGROUND About 600,000 camels (Camelus dromedarius) are believed to inhabit the arid centre of Australia, mainly in South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Most of these camels are feral. A small camel industry has developed, which harvests selected animals for domestic and export markets, primarily for meat. Camels can eat more than 80% of the common plant species found in Central Australia. Some plant species are actively sought by camels and may need to be protected. METHOD Observations of grazing preferences by camels were made periodically for up to 12 years on five cattle stations in Central Australia. Where camels were accustomed to the presence of humans, it was possible to observe their grazing preferences from a few metres. Radio transmitters were fitted on some camels for easy detection and observation at any time. These evaluations were used to establish a diet preference or palatability index for observed food plants. Table 1.
