  • Religion As a Role: Decoding Performances of Mormonism in the Contemporary United States
RELIGION AS A ROLE: DECODING PERFORMANCES OF MORMONISM IN THE CONTEMPORARY UNITED STATES Lauren Zawistowski McCool A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Dr. Scott Magelssen, Advisor Dr. Jonathan Chambers Dr. Lesa Lockford © 2012 Lauren Zawistowski McCool All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Scott Magelssen, Advisor Although Mormons have been featured as characters in American media since the nineteenth century, the study of the performance of the Mormon religion has received limited attention. As Mormonism (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) continues to appear as an ever-growing topic of interest in American media, there is a gap in discourse that addresses the implications of performances of Mormon beliefs and lifestyles as performed by both members of the Church and non-believers. In this thesis, I closely examine HBO’s Big Love television series, the LDS Church’s “I Am a Mormon” media campaign, Mormon “Mommy Blogs” and the personal performance of Mormons in everyday life. By analyzing these performances through the lenses of Stuart Hall’s theories of encoding/decoding, Benedict Anderson’s writings on imagined communities, and H. L. Goodall’s methodology for the new ethnography the aim of this thesis is to fill in some small way this discursive and scholarly gap. The analysis of performances of the Mormon belief system through these lenses provides an insight into how the media teaches and shapes its audience’s ideologies through performance. iv For Caity and Emily.

THESIS A REASON TO BELIEVE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF MORMON MISSIONARY FILMS Submitted by Sky L. Anderson Department of Communication Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Spring 2012 Master’s Committee Advisor: Carl Burgchardt Eric Aoki Kathleen Kiefer ABSTRACT A REASON TO BELIEVE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF MORMON MISSIONARY FILMS In this analysis, I examine Mormon cinema and how it functions on a rhetorical level. I specifically focus on missionary films, or movies that are framed by LDS missionary narratives. Through an analysis of two LDS missionary films, namely Richard Dutcher’s God’s Army (2000) and Mitch Davis’ The Other Side of Heaven (2001), I uncover two rhetorical approaches to fostering spirituality. In my first analysis, I argue that God’s Army presents two pathways to spirituality: one which produces positive consequences for the characters, and the other which produces negative consequences. I call these pathways, respectively, ascending and descending spirituality, and I explore the rhetorical implications of this framing. In my second analysis, I contend that The Other Side of Heaven creates a rhetorical space wherein the audience may transform. Specifically, the film constructs a “Zion,” or a heaven on earth, with three necessary components, which coincide perfectly with established LDS teachings: God, people, and place. These three elements invite the audience to accept that they are imperfect, yet they can improve if they so desire. Ultimately, by comparing my findings from both films, I argue that the films’ rhetorical strategies are well constructed to potentially reinforce beliefs for Mormon audiences, and they also may invite non-Mormons to think more positively about LDS teachings.

NEW YORK UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW PUBLIC LAW & LEGAL THEORY RESEARCH PAPER SERIES WORKING PAPER NO. 17-05 LAW & ECONOMICS RESEARCH PAPER SERIES WORKING PAPER NO. 17-06 The Unregulated Certification Mark(et) Jeanne C. Fromer March 2017 Electronic copy available at: https://ssrn.com/abstract=2910564 Stanford Law Review Volume 69 January 2017 ARTICLE The Unregulated Certification Mark(et)† Jeanne C. Fromer* Abstract. Certification mark law—a branch of trademark law—itself enables consequences that undermine the law’s own goals through inadequate regulation or oversight. Because the law allows certification standards to be kept vague, high-level, and underdeveloped, a certifier can choose to exclude certain businesses inconsistently or arbitrarily, even when those businesses’ goods or services would seem to qualify for the certification mark (particularly to consumers). Moreover, even when a certification standard is clear and complete, certifiers can wield their marks anticompetitively. They can do so through redefinition—something certification mark law currently allows without oversight—to ensure that certain businesses’ goods or services will not qualify for the mark. Both of these forms of certification mark manipulation undermine the goals of certification marks: to protect consumers by providing them with succinct information on goods’ or services’ characteristics and to promote competition by ensuring that any businesses’ goods or services sharing certain characteristics salient to consumers qualify for a mark certifying those characteristics. The law should be restructured to curb this conduct. I advocate for robust procedural regulation of certification standardmaking and decisionmaking that would detect and punish poor certification behavior. Moreover, for anticompetitive behavior that nonetheless slips through the regulatory cracks, I suggest that attentive antitrust scrutiny be arrayed to catch it.

  • S. Harrison 1 Trash Or Treasure in the Works of Trey Parker and Matt Stone
    S. Harrison 1 Trash or Treasure in the Works of Trey Parker and Matt Stone: What’s the Difference, and Who Decides? On March 24, 2011, New York Times reporter Ben Brantley described The Book of Mormon as “the best musical of this century… Heaven on Broadway.” He praised the writers, producers, and actors for “achieving something like a miracle.” As if this weren’t enough, Brantley went on to describe the musical as “cathartic” and the characters as both “likeable and funny.” In an online video titled “Subversive, Satirical, and Sold Out” posted on June 10, 2012, 60 Minutes host Steve Kroft commends the musical, stating that tickets for The Book of Mormon were the most heartily sought and hardest to obtain on Broadway this past summer. Moreover, Kroft boasts of the creators’ “big heart” as the foundation of the musical’s success. To employ a simple Google search for The Book of Mormon – while oftentimes bringing up information on the actual book and its corresponding faith – is to call forth resounding reviews of praise from both professional and amateur critics. The performance is being described as witty and satirical, appealing to the vast majority of musical-goers. However, The Book of Mormon with its undeniable success calls forth questions and criticism prompted by the previous works of creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Parker and Stone are infamous for their roles as developers, producers of, and performers in South Park, a television show that, in the words of Kroft, “changed the face of cable television” with its lewd, scatological humor and sensitive (and correspondingly insensitive handling of) thematic elements.

Dear Ladies & Gentlemen, Good evening, and welcome to the Saroyan Theatre for the final show of our 17-18 season Fresno Lexus Broadway in Fresno Series. The Book of Mormon, winner of nine Tony Awards, is making its second appearance in Fresno. I’m Mike Gibson of Fresno Lexus and as the title sponsor of the Broadway Series, I want to extend my personal warm welcome to subscribers and patrons to these performances. Whether you are a subscriber, returning patron, or at our beloved Saroyan Theatre for the first time, thank you for coming! While we are on the cusp of beginning our programming for the 18-19 season, I did want to pass along some exciting news. At the time of my writing this letter, our subscription base for the upcoming season is at an all-time high. I personally am so grateful of Fresno’s response to Lexus Broadway in Fresno. And our 18-19 season is spectacular. Our first show, Disney’s The Lion King, is playing in late November and early December. Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this show is one of the most beloved, and celebrated, musicals. Directed by Julie Taymor, with music and lyrics by Sir Elton John and Tim Rice, this show is one everyone should see and we are excited to be part of its first Fresno engagement. I think you will find THE KING AND I to be “Something Wonderful”, that you will be “Over The Moon” at RENT and laugh till you cry as we say “Welcome To The Renaissance” with SOMETHING ROTTEN.

  • Missionary Position: Mormon Hits the Spot at PPAC
Missionary Position: Mormon Hits the Spot at PPAC Jacques C. Smith as Mafala Hatimbi Storming into Providence to baptize the unbelievers is the return of The Book of Mormon, the insanely irreverent Trey Parker/Matt Stone/Robert Lopez concoction that upends the classic buddy quest (and, yes, Lord of the Rings is certainly referenced) and manages to skewer both America and religion in one fell swoop. Two young Mormons are sent out to carry the message of the Latter-Day Saints in an impoverished Ugandan village and the resulting two hours are not only hilarious, but great musical theater to boot. As Parker and Stone told Limelight in 2017, “You have to start with songs. And if the songs start really speaking to you and telling a story then you know you’ve got something.” And that’s the crux of Mormon’s success – these songs are polished, sophisticated, hummable musical theater delivered by a seasoned cast of touring pros, some of whom have been on this tour for years. Some touring productions feature not much more than polished glassy-eyed road warriors with rictus grins that barely hide their lack of enthusiasm at having to do a matinee in Tulsa. Mormon’s cast is clearly engaged and having the time of their lives, making the sweet, over the top sacrilege even more desirable. The three expository opening numbers, “Hello”, “Two by Two” and “You and Me (But Mostly Me)” are crisp (aided by exemplary sound engineering, at least on the Wednesday performance, which is no small feat given the size of the Mormon cast) and filled with precision choreography and performance.
