Whitehall Palace having been destroyed by fire in 1698, it was in St. James' Palace that Queen Anne set up her residence in 1702; and the Court of St. James' is still the term in official use to-day. Within a year she had created her Lord Privy Seal (John Sheffield) Duke of Buckingham, and he proceeded to erect for himself the big house looking down the length of the Mall which, rebuilt since, is known to us as Buckingham Palace. Shortly afterwards she allowed her Mistress of the Robes and close confidante, Sarah Duchess of Marlborough, to build the house in which the present exhibition is being held. From his campaign in the Low Countries the Duke had written to his wife: "You,know I never lik'd to build it at all. 'Tis not a proper Place for a great House. And I am sure," he added knowingly, "when you have built a little one you will not like it." The one which Sir Christopher Wren designed for her in 1709 is the present house minus the two top floors and certain additional rooms in the side wings. Built on so confined a site it has had to expand upwards, to the detriment of its appearance. The mettlesome Duchess was vexed by the inadequacy of its entrance from the street, and she resented too its domination by the houses in Pall Mall.

    Many Ways of Personal Piety – From Secular World into Sacred Space Examples of Liturgical Vestments and Other Paraments from the Collections of the National Museum in Krakow Joanna Regina Kowalska The National Museum in Krakow, Poland Abstract: Personal piety could be expressed by presenting the Church with beautiful liturgical vest- ments. Their richness depended on the wealth of a donor. The richest could afford the most expensive fabrics and the most skilled craftsmen. But the need of a personal donation was also very strong among less wealthy people. The Church was given women’s dresses, silk sashes or embroideries taken from the caparisons. All these donations were carefully exam- ined and the most suitable were remade into liturgical vestments. In the collections of the National Museum in Krakow one can find paraments made of fabrics taken from secular out- fits, mostly women’s skirts and silk sashes of Polish noblemen’s costume. Quite interesting are also home-made paraments offered as pious donations. We will see that the history of liturgical vestments can be fascinating and it is always worthwhile examining them carefully even if their artistic quality is not the highest one.     Basics of Opus Anglicanum by Sidney Eileen 23 April, 2015 What is Opus Anglicanum? Opus Anglicanum is Latin for “English Work”, and refers to a style of embroidery practiced in England from approximately 1200-1350 c.e. It is typified by underside couched gold and silver thread, and silk thread worked in split stitch to create flowing details and shading often referred to as “painting with thread”. A handful of ecclesiastical examples survive to this day, but at the time it was may also have been used for secular pieces. Stylistic Details Metal threads are typically used for halos and backgrounds, worked almost exclusively in an underside couching stitch. This is done because it saves the couching thread from wear, and it creates a hinge in the metal thread, allowing the finished piece to move and flow, rather than being overly stiff. Background stitches are often placed in a way that creates a pattern on the finished piece, such as herringbone, lattice, chevrons, or florals. Halos are stitched in an oval or circle around the subject's head. Silks are worked in split stitch, often very tiny (as small as 2mm in detailed areas like faces), using three or more shades of each color to create detailed flow and shading of the figures, objects, and garments. The direction of the stitches is important to indicate flow and direction. For example, spiraling stitches on the forehead, cheek, tip of the nose, and chin to give a feeling of roundness and fullness. Stitches follow the folds of fabric, and the flow of hair.

    The Humble Couching Stitch Research Paper Submitted by Natalie Dupuis www.SewByHand.com April, 2020 Subject: The humbly magnificent couching stitch from medieval times to present day, classified into distinct categories. INTRODUCTION Goldwork - one of the most beautiful techniques in hand embroidery - employs the humblest of stitches, the couching stitch. A stitch that theoretically is easily executed, but requires a steady hand and keen eye to be enjoyed at its highest precision. This paper provides a concise examination of the couching stitch as used in Europe from medieval times to present day. The various forms of couching stitches are reviewed with photographic support of both historic and modern examples. By the end of this paper it is the author’s wish that the reader will better understand the sub-categories of underside couching, pattern couching, diaper patterns, or nué, Italian shading, damascening, vermicelli, and contemporary variations. The couching stitch has been used for centuries to hold metal threads onto the surface of fabric. It’s most basic use can be traced back to extant samples from the 1st century BC in the Scythian community (Clabburn, 1976). Tortora & Phyllis (2007) define it as “a method of embroidering in which a design is made by various threads or cords laid upon the surface of a material and secured by fine stitches drawn through the material and across the cord.” Generally speaking, a single or double length of metal thread is laid upon the surface of the fabric, and is then held in place with a series of stitches which can be near invisible or highly visible, and regularly or irregularly spaced.

Greenlease donated a walnut crucifix by French sculptor César Bagard to Rockhurst University’s Jesuit community in Kansas City, Missouri. This gift initiated a collaboration of thirty years between Mrs. Greenlease and Rockhurst’s president, Father Maurice E. Van Ackeren, S.J. Together they sought to enhance the university and its students’ spiritual and educational experience by making fine religious works of art accessible for viewing on campus. Virginia financed the purchases that Father Van Ackeren made, the sum of which came to be known as the Van Ackeren Collection of Religious Art. Throughout their endeavor, the two took advantage of the expertise of the curators of the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art in Kansas City, Missouri (now known as The Nelson- Atkins Museum of Art) and employed that institution as an intermediary station for evaluating works before they were purchased.

    EMBROIDERY IN THE OPUS ANGLICANUM STYLE GULF WARS ARTS & SCIENCES COMPETITION MARCH 14, 2008 DESCRIPTION OF ITEM TO BE JUDGED: Two embroidered panels using the split stitch technique common to Opus Anglicanum embroideries. BACKGROUND: Opus Anglicanum, meaning English Work in Latin, was not an embroidery stitch; rather, it was a descriptive applied to a style of embroideries created during the 13th and 14th centuries. The skilled execution, use of shading and detail, and the lifelike expression of the figures set it apart from earlier embroidery techniques. Opus Anglicanum quickly became popular and the style was copied throughout Europe. The technique was most particularly prized for use in ecclesiastical (church) works such as capes, alter frontals, and stoles. Wilson states, “Only the best that the hand of man could form would be suitable for use in the house of God.”¹ However, the style was also used to create secular garments and accessories, such as purses and wall hangings. Probably because the Church used their embroidered works only during religious observances and took care to preserve their items, there are more surviving extant works of an ecclesiastical nature as opposed to secular items. DESIGN: The panels were designed to be appliquéd to a velvet background. I originally intended to make a burse (purse) from these, but decided instead to stitch them to a cover to be used on a book to be given to a friend as a gift. The commercially purchased journal is approximately 8”by 6”. This dictated the design size. I began by searching the Internet for medieval illuminations to use as an inspiration for the embroidered panels.
