CITY OF ELGIN Customer ID: 2553 Certificate: 33-C-0033 Site: 001 CITY OF ELGIN LORDS PARK ZOO 150 DEXTER COURT Type: ROUTINE INSPECTION Date: 20 May 2014 ELGIN, IL 60120 3.125 FACILITIES, GENERAL. The fencing on the south and southeast side of the elk and white-tailed deer pens are in disrepair. Two sections of the cyclone fencing (each section approximately eight feet wide) on the elk pen have a gap beneath them measuring approximately five inches. One section of cyclone fencing (approximately eight feet wide) on the deer pen has a gap beneath it measuring approximately four inches. The bottoms of these three fence sections can be pulled approximately one and a half feet away from the pens.

The gaps and the ability to move the bottoms of these fences could potentially allow wild and unauthorized persons into the elk and deer pens.

Repair or replace the affected sections of fence.

Type: ROUTINE INSPECTION Date: 23-JAN-2017

3.125(a) FACILITIES, GENERAL. A large plastic wind shield is being chewed by the animals inside of their enclosure. The white plastic shield is in located inside of the barn containing 10 sheep, 15 goats, 1 cow, and 1 alpaca. The shield has been pulled away from the separation wall by the animals. The plastic, if ingested, could make the animals ill.

Repair or replace the wind shield to protect the animals from injury.

To be corrected: 1-27-17

3.127(c) FACILITIES, OUTDOOR. The outdoor area of the enclosure containing 10 sheep, 15 goats, 1 cow, and 1 alpaca is saturated with excessive mud and water. A thick layer of mulch was placed over the concrete (ground) in the outdoor area of the enclosure approximately 1 year ago. The animal traffic, combined with the winter weather, has turned the mulch into mud. Excessively muddy enclosures can make it difficult for animals to walk.

Remove the mud/old mulch and assure that a suitable method to rapidly eliminate excess water is in place.

To be corrected: 2-13-17

This inspection and exit interview were conducted with the farmyard manager.

3.75(a) HOUSING FACILITIES, GENERAL. During inspection it was brought to my attention that a male Brown-headed spider monkey named JR was injured on May 21, 2016. The monkey appeared to have gotten his hand stuck on the shift door. Three of the fingers had to be surgically removed due to the injury. An enclosure that is not structurally sound for the species of monkey contained within the enclosure allows for the possibility of injuries to occur to the animals within that enclosure. The enclosure must be fixed so that hazards that could cause injury to the monkeys within the enclosure are eliminated. Correct by 10/21/16.

Note: The enclosure was under construction at the time of inspection. The licensee has made adjustments to the enclosure containing the Brown-headed spider monkeys to eliminate possible hazards that could potentially cause injury to the animals within that enclosure in the future.

This inspection and exit interview were conducted with the licensee.

3.129(a) FEEDING. Excessive rodent feces are present in the kitchen of the facility. Mouse feces were observed on the counter top used to store fresh produce that is used to feed the animals. The feces were located directly under the wire bins containing apples, bananas, pears, and squash. Additionally, excessive amounts of rodent feces were observed the on the floor beneath the same counter top. Rodents can carry and spread diseases that affect animals. Consuming contaminated or soiled produce could make the animals ill.

The produce should be evaluated for signs of contamination. The produce must be stored in a manner that it is not susceptible to contamination by rodents.

To be corrected: 1-13-17

3.131(c) SANITATION. Excessive rodent feces were observed in the kitchen of the facility. The feces were located on the counter top used to store produce and on the floor beneath the counter top. The facility animal care director indicated that the mouse feces in this area were last cleaned a few days ago. The facility does have an existing pest control program for the rodents in place, however; the feces must be cleaned/removed with increased frequency to assure that the pest control methods are effectively controlling the rodents. Mouse feces can contain diseases that make the animals ill.

Clean/remove the rodent feces and repeat often enough to assure that the pest control provisions are effectively controlling the rodent population.

To be corrected: 1-13-17

3.50(a) CRITICAL FACILITIES, GENERAL. Four rabbits escaped from their enclosure approximately two weeks ago and were never recovered as per the facility owner. The rabbits were able to dig underneath the enclosure fence and escape as per the facility owner. The escaped rabbits could fall prey to predators as the facility is in a rural location.

Assure that the rabbit enclosure is maintained so that the rabbits can't escape.

To be corrected: From this day forward.

3.130 DIRECT WATERING. DIRECT

Sixteen pigs did not have access to water and drank voraciously after it was provided to them. The sixteen pigs are housed in four stalls (four pigs per stall) inside of the racing pig building. Each of the stalls contain a large PVC tube with a Lixit valve attached near the bottom. These are the pigs' water receptacles. None of the tubes contained water. The tubes were filled with water at my request. Each of the sixteen pigs began to push each other and fight for control of the water. At least one stall of pigs was observed drinking voraciously for two minutes. This would indicate that the pigs were not provided enough water or that they were not provided with water often enough.

The pigs must be provided with water as often as necessary to provide for their health and comfort.

To be corrected: This was corrected during the time of inspection as the pigs were offered water, Ensure that this is corrected from this day forward.

Seven water receptacles were dirty, had excessive debris, and/or had algae buildup in them during the time of inspection. The first water tub was located within the enclosure containing twelve goats, four sheep, and one alpaca. Th inside walls of the water tub were coated with green algae. The second tub was located in the barn stall with the two goats. It contained feces, hay, and other debris. The third tub was located in the single cow's enclosure. The bottom of the water tub was coated with green algae. The final four were located in the pigs' stalls. The inside of each tube had large amounts of black and brown material on them.

Consuming water with these contaminants could make the animals ill.

Clean these water receptacles and repeat often enough to assure that the animals have access to clean water.

To be corrected: 9-30-16

3.131(a) SANITATION. Excessive feces and flies were present in the stall containing the two Holstein calves during the time of inspection. At least 2/3 of the stall contained soiled straw. Numerous flies were observed in the feces and in the calves food dish. Excessive feces attracts flies and can cause animal diseases.

Clean the stall and repeat often enough to prevent excessive build up of feces.

To be corrected: 9-30-16

Approximately 1/4 of an inch of wet feces covered all four of the pig stalls. The feces completely covered the concrete stall floors and covered the majority of the stall walls. The stalls were flushed with water by the license holder during the inspection; however, this left one of the stalls with significant standing water. It also left all of the other stalls with only wet concrete. Excessive feces and standing water can cause health problems in pigs.

Ensure the pig stalls are kept clean by removing feces often enough to prevent build up. The pigs must also have a dry, clean place within their stalls to lie down.

To be corrected: 9-30-16
