WHITMAN EUGENE MCDERMOTT HEADMISTRESS Dear Hockaday Community: Our world becomes by the day a more closely interwoven pattern of political, cultural, religious, and economic cause and effect. Even while very young, our children communicate electronically and travel in real time and space more than any of us imagined when we were young. The ways we educate – formally and deliberately, as well as informally but intentionally – must reflect these changes (with little hope of keeping pace, it would seem). And what kind of a world will it be? There are Hockaday children in our Pre-K program (and maybe other grades) who will live into the 22nd Century – not for the greatest part of their lives, obviously, but for nevertheless meaningful parts of their lives. We are therefore educating students who will be our future leaders well into the 21st Century and whose lives may span the remainder of this very young century. The world in which they will live will almost certainly feel very close, despite geographic distance. What is the role of traditional Pre-K through Grade 12 education in such a world? We know, as I have written in this space before, that it must be rich in science and technology; in building strong character; and, as is the focus in this issue of the magazine, rich in its focus on international and cultural differences. This issue of the Hockaday Magazine focuses on the international perspective found at Hockaday. Students are exposed to a world of cultures, ideas, and opinions through our Residence Program, semester abroad opportunities, academics, and summer school. Our classrooms and hallways are diverse with students from Dallas, West Texas, Pakistan, Connecticut, Germany, New Mexico, and Hong Kong to name a few. Approximately 31 languages are spoken by students, faculty, and staff on Hockaday’s campus. Academically, Hockaday’s curriculum has grown to include global studies in art, literature, science, and history. Our language program, which begins in the Lower School, continues to grow with the addition of Mandarin Chinese in the Upper School. The School’s annual traditions flourish and encompass international celebrations such as Diwali and El Día de los Muertos, two wonderfully colorful examples of the world from which many of our students come and celebrate. No matter the challenges presented to them, Hockaday women have always been adept to finding their way in the world and defining success for themselves. Miss Hockaday’s vision for a girls’ education for the modern world has laid the foundation for our students’ successes – past, present, and future. We are grateful for her foresight to prepare girls to meet the future with confidence. Very truly yours, Jeanne P.
