Strong Ground Motion Characteristics from the 17 August 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey Earthquake
BOLLETTINO DI GEOFISICA TEORICA ED APPLICATA VOL. 43, N. 1-2, PP. 37-52; MAR.-JUN. 2002 Strong ground motion characteristics from the 17 August 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake A. AKINCI Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Roma, Italy (Received July 2, 2001; accepted December 21, 2001) Abstract - The 17 August 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake (Mw.=.7.4, USGS) occurred in the western part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone about 80 km east of Istanbul. The mechanism of the main event was almost a pure right-lateral strike- slip, and the aftershock distribution indicates that the rupture was located toward the western end of the North Anatolian Fault Zone. The earthquake affected a wide area in the Marmara region, as well as the city of Istanbul. Most of the damage and fatalities occurred in towns located on the narrow, flat shoreline of the Sea of Marmara. Since the broken fault segment traversed the densely populated and industrialized east Marmara region, damage was enormously high. Widespread liquefactions caused bearing capacity losses and consequent foundation failu- res in the Adapazari region, as well as extensive subsidence along the shoreline in Gölcük (Gulf of Izmit) and Sapanca. The earthquake struck also the western suburbs of Istanbul, the Avcilar region, causing severe damage on buildings even though the distance from the epicenter was about 80 km. In this study, we discuss the ground motion characteristics, as well as directivity and soil effects of recorded ground acceleration of the Kocaeli earthquake. Strong-motion data were obtained from the networks managed by the Bogaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute and by the General Director of Disaster Affairs, Earthquake Research Department. -
Varto, Hınıs, Bulanık, Malazgirt Yöresi Linyitlerinin Petrografik Özellikleri
Türkiye Jeoloji Bülteni, C. 34, 15-22, Ağustos 1991 Geological Bulletin of Turkey, V. 34, 15-22, August 1991 Varto, Hınıs, Bulanık, Malazgirt yöresi linyitlerinin petrografik özellikleri Petrographic properties of the lignites of Varto, Hınıs, Bulanık, Malazgirt regions İLKER ŞENGÜLER MTA Enerji Hammadde Etüd ve Arama Dairesi, Ankara SELAMİ TOPRAK MTA Maden Analizleri ve Teknoloji Dairesi, Ankara ÖZ: Bölgedeki linyit oluşumları, göl çökeli olan Alt Pliyosen-Üst Pliyosen yaşlı Zırnak formasyonu içinde yeralır. ABSTRACT: The lignite seams are occured in the Zırnak formation within the Hınıs basin. This unit was deposited in the limnic environment and ranges of Lower Pliocene to Upper Pliocene in age. The typical section of the formation are exposed in the Zırnak Hill. The lignite seams varying with different thiknesses have cut during drillings. The corre- lation of lignites in the region, having the Zırnak hill lignites as base have been carried out with petrographical proper- ties of the lignites in the petrographical analysis, the lignite seams seem to contain of high amount of iron, clay-silicate minerals as well as exinite macerals but low amount of humunite macerals and it seems that the amount of inertinite macerals are mostly lower than exinite macerals. -

Persian Journal of Acarology, Vol. 2, No. 3, pp. 487–502. Article Some cryptognathid mites (Acari: Cryptognathidae) from Kütahya Province (Turkey) İsmail Uluçay1* & Kamil Koç2 1 Hakkari University, Yüksekova Vocational School, Hakkari, Turkey; E-mail: iulucay @gmail.com 2 Celal Bayar University, Faculty of Sciences and Arts, Department of Biology, Manisa, Turkey. E-mail: [email protected] * Corresponding Author Abstract Six cryptognathid mites were collected from Kütahya Province. Of these, three species belong to the genus Cryptognathus Kramer, 1879 and three species to the genus Favognathus Luxton, 1973. A new species Cryptoganathus kutahyaensis sp. nov., and the male of Favognathus cucurbita Berlese, 1917, from Turkey, are described and illustrated. Keys to all the species of the genus Cryptognathus and the Favognathus species of the Kütahya Province are provided. Key words: Acari, Cryptognathidae, Cryptognathus kutahyaensis sp. nov., new species, Turkey. Introduction Cryptognathids are small, scarlet-red or orange mites, their measurments are from 300 to 400 µm in length. The body is oval and lacks a suture between the propodosoma and the hysterosoma. The dorsal shield is reticulate or punctate (Baker & Wharton 1952; Krisper & Schneider 1998; Luxton 1993). Their mouth parts are often highly protruding (Luxton 1973). Members of the family are generally collected from soil, grass-covered soil, litter, mosses and lichens and they feed on algae, mosses and fungi (Koç & Ayyıldız 1998; Doğan & Ayyıldız 2004; Doğan 2008; Doğan & Dönel 2010; Dönel & Doğan 2011; Luxton 1993; Swift 1996; Swift & Goff 2001). Cryptognathidae contains three genera: Cryptognathus Kramer, 1879, Favognathus Luxton, 1973 and Cryptofavognathus Doğan & Dönel, 2010. Nineteen species of genus Cryptognathus Kramer, 1879 have been so far recorded in the world and four of them are known from Turkey, namely, C. -

Kurdish Studies BOOK REVIEWS
BOOK REVIEWS Minoo Alinia, Honor and Violence against Women in Iraqi Kurdistan. Palgrave Macmillan, 2013, 190 pp., (ISBN: 978-1-137-36700-6). This book is an excellent account of honour based violence in Iraqi Kurdistan or indeed anywhere in the world. Minoo Alinia sets out by positioning Kurd- ish women’s experiences in their socio-political context. Making use of Kim- berle Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality, Alinia argues that “intersection- al analysis concerns not only oppression but also resistance and struggle…. not only the complexity of oppression but also the complexity and contradic- tory nature of struggles when various forms of oppression intersect” (p. 8). The book structure does exactly that. After locating the book in chapter one, chapter two discusses the historical context of political oppression and re- sistance in this region. This is followed by outlining the intersectionality of women’s oppression in chapter three. Chapter four discusses the relationship between honour, masculinity and violence. The following three chapters ad- dress women’s individual and collective resistances and empowerment. The ideas are then summarised and their implications are discussed in the final chapter. This multi-dimensional study takes different perspectives into account. It analyses 30 interviews with perpetrators, survivors, women activists and the staff of women’s organisations who work in this field. The result is a rich ac- count of honour-based violence in a historical context where militarisation and political violence “reinforce the effects of militaristic thinking” and make violence “a large part of everyday consciousness” (p. 33). Alinia identifies two concepts of honour in her book. -
