SUMMARY In this study I examine R.L. Stevenson as a writer of essays, poems, and books of travel as well as a writer of adventure fiction; taking the word "adventure" to include both outdoor and indoor adventure. Choosing to be remembered in his epitaph as the sailor and the hunter, Stevenson is regarded as the most interesting literary wanderer in Scottish literature and among the most intriguing in English literature. Dogged by ill- health, he travelled from "one of the vilest climates under heaven" to more congenial climates in England, the Continent, the States, and finally the South Seas where he died and was buried. Besides, Stevenson liked to escape, especially in his youth, from the respectabilities of Victorian Edinburgh and from family trouble, seeking people and places whose nature was congenial to his own Bohemian nature. -

We hear the creak of rigging on a ship set adrift. As the lights begin to dim, we hear menacing, thrilling music building in the background. When a single spot is left illuminating the chest, the music comes to a crashing climax and quickly subsides to continue playing in the background. With the musical climax, the lid of the chest opens with a horrifying groan. Light starts to emanate from the chest, and the spotlight dims. Voices and the sounds of action begin to issue forth from the chest. The music continues underneath.) VOICE OF BILLY BONES (singing) "Fifteen men on the dead man's chest - Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum! Drink and the devil had done for the rest - Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!" It was the last piece of verse read by Stevenson, and it is the subject of the last letter he wrote on the last day of his life. The poem was read by Mr. Lloyd Osbourne at the funeral. It was his mother’s pub when she was alive but now it is his pub. Unfortunately, Jim doesn’t Jlike working in a pub. He likes the sea and dreams of going on a sailing adventure. One day Billy Bones, a pirate, comes into the pub. He dies with a treasure map in his hand. Jim looks at the map. It is a secret treasure map of Treasure Island. It says that on the island there are three clues that will help him find the treasure. Jim decides to go to Treasure Island. He wants the treasure. Of course, Jim needs a ship. He meets Captain Long John Silver and his parrot, Captain Flint. Jim tells Long John Silver about Treasure Island. Long John Silver offers to take Jim on his ship, ‘The Hispaniola’. Jim agrees and they set off on the voyage. Unfortunately for Jim, Long John Silver is a pirate! When they arrive at Treasure Island, Long John Silver tries to steal the map from Jim. But Jim escapes with his map and goes to find the three clues. The three clues that will take him to the treasure. When Jim starts looking for the treasure, he meets an old man called Ben. Ben has been on the island for a long time and helps Jim find the three clues. Clue 1: Change letters on the finger tree. -

Playful Subversions: Hollywood Pirates Plunder Spanish America NINA GERASSI-NAVARRO The figure of the pirate evokes a number of distinct and contrasting images: from a fearless daredevil seeking adventure on the high seas to a dangerous and cruel plunderer moved by greed. Owing obedience to no one and loyal only to those sharing his way of life, the pirate knows no limits other than the sea and respects no laws other than his own. His portrait is both fascinating and frightening. As a hero, he is independent, audacious, intrepid and rebellious. Defying society's rules and authority, sailing off to the unknown in search of treasures, fearing nothing, the pirate is the ultimate symbol of freedom. But he is also a dangerous outlaw, known for his violent tactics and ruthless assaults. The social code he lives by inspires enormous fear, for it is extremely rigid and anyone daring to disobey the rules will suffer severe punishments. These polarized images have captured the imagination of historians and fiction writers alike. Sword in hand, eye-patch, with a hyperbolic mustache and lascivious smile, Captain Hook is perhaps the most obvious image-though burlesque- of the dangerous fictional pirate. His greedy hook destroys everything that crosses his hungry path, even children. On a more serious level, we might think of the tortures the cruel and violent Captain Morgan inflicted upon his enemies, hanging them by their testicles, cutting their ears or tongues off; or of Jean David Nau, the French pirate known as L 'Ollonais (el Olonés in Spanish), who would rip the heart out of his victims if they did not comply with his requests; 1 or even the terrible Blackbeard who enjoyed locking himself up with a few of his men and shooting at them in the dark: «If I don't kill someone every two or three days I will lose their respect» he is said to have claimed justifyingly. -

AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES Few authors of note have seen so many and frank judg- ments of their work from the pens of their contemporaries as Stevenson saw. He was a ^persona grata ' with the whole world of letters, and some of his m,ost admiring critics were they of his own craft—poets, novelists, essayists. In the following pages the object in view has been to garner a sheaf of memories and criticisms written—before and after his death—for the most part by eminent contemporaries of the novelist, and interesting, apart from intrinsic worth, by reason of their writers. Mr. Henry James, in his ' Partial Portraits,' devotes a long and brilliant essay to Stevenson. Although written seven years prior to Stevenson's death, and thus before some of the most remarkable productions of his genius had appeared, there is but little in -i^^^ Mr. James's paper which would require modi- fication to-day. Himself the wielder of a literary style more elusive, more tricksy than Stevenson's, it is difficult to take single passages from his paper, the whole galaxy of thought and suggestion being so cleverly meshed about by the dainty frippery of his manner. Mr. James begins by regretting the 'extinction of the pleasant fashion of the literary portrait,' and while deciding that no individual can bring it back, he goes on to say It is sufficient to note, in passing, that if Mr. Stevenson had P 226 STEVENSONIANA presented himself in an age, or in a country, of portraiture, the painters would certainly each have had a turn at him. -
