Tour By Day DAY 1 Bienvenu in Burgundy Your guides will greet you at the train station in Dijon, a culinary mecca of international influence. Here the adventure begins with an essential bike fitting and safety talk. Then we are off for an easy scenic spin along the famous Canal de Bourgogne which connects Burgundy to Paris and is one of the most attractive canals in France. A relatively flat terrain composed partially of characteristic towpaths will allow us to feel as if we are floating along peacefully, like the iconic barges on the canal. We will arrive at our first luxurious accommodation, Abbaye de la Bussière, where we will spend two nights. This evening we’re treated to a Michelin-starred meal prepared especially for us by the hotel chef. Bon dégustation! Meals: Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Dijon, Fleurey-sur-Ouche, Saint-Victor-sur-Ouche, La Bussière-sur-Ouche Accomplished: 20 miles / 32 km, elevation gain: 574 feet / 175 meters Accommodations: Abbaye de la Bussière DAY 2 The Vineyards of the Côte de Nuits After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll start the day cycling from the Canal de Bourgogne to the forest of the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. We’ll descend from there to the realm of the most famous vineyards in the world. Our ride along the Route des Grands Crus will reveal the prestigious vineyard origins of some of history’s most iconic wines. We’ll stop in Gevrey-Chambertin to taste powerful red wines, known to be Napoleon’s favorites. Lunch will be a magical affair prepared by our friend and winemaker Christine Drouhin, paired with her own sophisticated wines. After lunch you may opt to continue in the saddle, passing abundant wheat and canola fields and Burgundy’s pale and regal Charolais cows grazing in their pastures. You also have the option to hop in the van to take advantage of the relaxing hotel grounds. This evening, we’ll visit nearby Château Sainte Sabine for a local and authentic dining experience. Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Saint-Victor-sur-Ouche,Ternant, Curley, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, Chamboeuf, Urcy, Sainte-Marie-sur-Ouche, La Bussière-sur-Ouche Accomplished: 24 miles / 39 km, elevation gain: 2,054 feet / 626 meters Accommodations: Abbaye de la Bussière DuVine itineraries may be subject to slight route changes, hotel substitutions, and other modifications. DAY 3 La Route de Grands Crus in the Côte d’Or A typical French breakfast of fresh croissants fuels us up to discover more Grands Crus vineyards. Get over the first big hill before descending on tranquil roads towards the renowned Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and through Corton-Charlemagne, which shares its name with the French king who loved the area’s vineyards. Burgundy’s beautiful tiled roofs point the way to Savigny-lès-Beaune where we join Greg, a friend and passionate vigneron, at his home. Here we’ll enjoy a generous tasting of sparkling Crémant de Bourgogne before we settle in for lunch at the bistro on the town square. We’ll round out our day cycling the last 10 miles to medieval Beaune, Burgundy’s wine capital. Refreshed and reunited again, we will pay a visit to the Hôtel-Dieu, a charity hospital founded in 1443, and one of the finest examples of 15th-century French architecture. Tonight, your guides will take you out for a true Burgundian affair at our favorite gastronomic spot in Beaune. Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Aloxe-Corton, Savigny- lès-Beaune, Beaune Accomplished: miles / 57 km, elevation gain: 2,250 feet / 688 meters Accommodations: Hôtel Le Cep DAY 4 Explore the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Fuel up with a lovely breakfast at the hotel in Beaune before cycling through the picturesque villages of the French countryside. Pedal past the château at La Rochepot and through the charming hamlet of Orches before a leisurely downhill ride into Saint-Aubin, home to a grand Romanesque church and treasured Premier Cru wines. We’ll then take a bike path to Santenay, the most southerly wine-producing village of the Côte de Beaune and our lunch spot, where your guides will invite you to indulge in a gourmet picnic. An afternoon cycle through iconic wine towns such as Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay, and Pommard will lead us back to Beaune to freshen up and visit a domaine near the famous Hospice de Beaune. The evening is yours to enjoy one of the many excellent restaurants in Beaune. The grand finale is a one-mile climb up to the perched medieval village of Châteauneuf. Celebrate your success with a fashionably late lunch at our favorite auberge and discover the town’s 15th-century fortress with a panoramic view of the canal and valley below. Upon wrapping up there, we’ll hop in the van for a 40-minute transfer to our final hotel in Saulieu. Relax with a massage in the hotel’s luxurious spa or venture out to explore the charming town. FRANCE - BURGUNDY VINEYARD TRAILS 8-days/ 7-nights SELF-GUIDED inn-to-inn walking holiday A great walk for food and wine enthusiasts, with a lovely progression from gentle walking to moderate grade as the week unfolds. Burgundy has a rich and complex history and many areas of natural beauty. It is a beautiful and fertile land where farmers, foresters, and above all wine growers have nurtured the landscape for more than a thousand years. Burgundy is a multifaceted landscape just waiting to be explored, and, as elsewhere in France, the best way to enjoy it is to explore on foot its peaceful lanes and byways. Travellers will discover a fabled land of medieval chateaux, ancient monasteries and fragrant breezes where the art of living, l’art de vivre, is pursued to near perfection at a relaxed pace. Beaune has a cluster of prestigious vineyards such as the Côte d’Or, Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Start with a visit to the mansion of the Dukes of Burgundy, the basilica of Notre Dame and the steep pitched patterned roofs of the Hotel Dieu, and sample wine in the village of Pommard. Join the ‘Grande Randonnee’ paths through oak forests to the village and chateau of La Rochepot. Visit Nolay, a medieval village of narrow streets and half-timbered houses. Ascend onto the escarpment and hilltops for glorious views to the Alps. Enjoy Rully, the ancient Château of Montaigu, the produce of the Côtes Chalonnaises and many villages. The landscape is a mix of vineyards on the lower slopes, woodlands, and pastures and arable land on the plateau.
