The Well-Trained Theologian
THE WELL-TRAINED THEOLOGIAN essential texts for retrieving classical Christian theology part 1, patristic and medieval Matthew Barrett Credo 2020 Over the last several decades, evangelicalism’s lack of roots has become conspicuous. Many years ago, I experienced this firsthand as a university student and eventually as a seminary student. Books from the past were segregated to classes in church history, while classes on hermeneutics and biblical exegesis carried on as if no one had exegeted scripture prior to the Enlightenment. Sometimes systematics suffered from the same literary amnesia. When I first entered the PhD system, eager to continue my theological quest, I was given a long list of books to read just like every other student. Looking back, I now see what I could not see at the time: out of eight pages of bibliography, you could count on one hand the books that predated the modern era. I have taught at Christian colleges and seminaries on both sides of the Atlantic for a decade now and I can say, in all honesty, not much has changed. As students begin courses and prepare for seminars, as pastors are trained for the pulpit, they are not required to engage the wisdom of the ancient past firsthand or what many have labelled classical Christianity. Such chronological snobbery, as C. S. Lewis called it, is pervasive. The consequences of such a lopsided diet are now starting to unveil themselves. Recent controversy over the Trinity, for example, has manifested our ignorance of doctrines like eternal generation, a doctrine not only basic to biblical interpretation and Christian orthodoxy for almost two centuries, but a doctrine fundamental to the church’s Christian identity. -

Less than 11 months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, East and West Germany – which as a result of the Sec- ond World War had endured 40 years of separation and confrontation – were now reunited. Even before the official reunification took place, Bauer, like many companies in West Germany, had been very keen to move into the former German Demo- cratic Republic (GDR) firstly in order to expand its markets and, secondly, to assist in the transition from a planned economy to a free market economy. Twenty years on, this Review looks at how Bauer went about this undertaking, returning once again to focus on the early days of the reunification process. The story is told not so much on the basis of documents and records, but rather through the voices of the man- agers responsible for running the busi- ness at the time. Most of them are still in senior management posts today, though some have retired. Witnesses on the Schrobenhausen side who were consulted in compiling the report in- cluded Chairman of the Management Board Thomas Bauer and Heinz Kalten - ecker, as well as Wolfgang Brunner, Alexander Hofer, Josef Goller and Ernst Stümpfle. -

Hilary offers an understanding of salvation in which Christ saves humanity by assuming every single person into his body in the incarnation. My dissertation contributes to scholarship on Hilary in two ways. First, I demonstrate that Hilary’s teaching concerning Christ’s assumption of all humanity is a unique development of Latin sources. Because of his understanding of Christ’s assumption of all humanity, Hilary, along with several Greek fathers, has been accused of heterodoxy resulting from Greek Platonic influence. I demonstrate that Hilary is not influenced by Platonism; rather, though his redemption model is unique among the early Latin fathers, he derives his theology from a combination of Latin-influenced biblical exegesis and classical Roman themes. -

In response, we offer the following as a window to deeper understanding. We live in a time in which a whole host of old forms of civilization to which humankind still erroneously clings, are sinking into the abyss, a time in which the claim insistently arises that we must find our way to something new. Rudolf Steiner At autumn time, as the life forces of nature recede, turning toward a winter sleep, the inner life of the human soul is awakening. It is a time of conscious selfhood, a time when we celebrate the building and strengthening of our inner life. In many cultures, the autumn time marks the beginning of a new year. The forces of nature are transiting with the autumnal equinox, as the relationship of light and darkness changes the world around us. The equinox is for us a turning point, a change in the relation of light and darkness in the world around us. On September 29th the autumn festival traditionally known as Michaelmas is celebrated. This festival is named for the Archangel Michael, conqueror of the powers of darkness, the harvester of the deeds of human souls. It is at this time that the image of Michael with the dragon appears before us as a mighty imagination, challenging us to develop strong, brave, free wills, to overcome love of ease, anxiety and fear. -

A Life of Our Holy Father Norbert Early life and Conversion The members of the court of Henry V would have been astonished, had it been foretold, that one from amongst them would become a great Saint. That after a conversion of an unusual nature, followed by the austere penance and constant prayer, journeys over wide stretches of country to evangelise and reform both clergy and people, he would found a religious order, which would spread over the face of the earth, exceeding all expectations. Norbert of Xanten, the gifted courtier, gave little or no indication that he ever would become an apostle of Christ. He was a son of Heribert, Count of Gennep and claimed on both his father’s and his mother’s side to be of royal blood. He spent several years of his youth at the court of Frederic de Carinthia, Archbishop of Cologne. He was ordained sub-deacon and appointed to a Canonry in the Collegiate Church at Xanten. Later he left the Archbishop’s court and became attached to that of the Emperor Henry V. In a short space of time he grew to be as much a favourite here as he had been at the court of the Archbishop. In appearance he was attractive; in manners charming; in conversation interesting, in disposition, kind, thoughtful, considerate towards others; and thus it came about that members of the household from the highest to the lowest felt that in Norbert they had a sympathetic friend. The attractions of the court held him captive to such a degree that he neglected the religious duties, which his appointment to the Canonry of Xanten required of him. -
