Code of Conduct - 2011-2012

The role of Commissioner continues to provide players, umpires and the Executive Committee with a respected process for investigating incidents both on off the field where they occur. With all players being required to acknowledge that they are aware of the Code of Conduct, (with a specific reminder from the President at the start of the season) there has been a significant decrease in such incidents in the past 12 months. All players are to be congratulated on this result.

We were also fortunate early in the summer season to have selectors Trevor Hohns & Rod Rice grace Marchant Park, in looking over the best T20 players we had on offer, with the hope of having one of our players picked for the Heat selection trials. They must have liked what they saw, with Griffith University’s Phil McKeough selected, and holding his own in the game that he played in these trials. Hopefully, the same selection process will carry on, and another of our players has the (above: , Brad Sengstock receives the Plunkett Cup from Nev Taylor) chance to push his cause at a higher level.

The undoubted highlight for the year Cricket Superstar Series: for Warehouse Cricket was with our representative side striking success in winning the Plunkett Cup for the second year in succession. When 22 teams nominated for the 2009 Carnival, it was the highest number in some twenty five years. What followed was two awful years when both 2009 and 2010 were completely washed out. Whilst in 2011 it was always going to be difficult to entice teams back, 12 teams did play in a week when remarkably, no play was lost due to weather. Manning Valley (NSW) bucked the trend and sent an additional team whilst stalwarts, Kingaroy would not let tradition down after some 50 years of continuous Country Week participation.

The Eager’s Trophy (symbol of Country Week Cricket since its inauguration in 1947) was an all Country final with Kingaroy, led by Troy Dennien (left) fending off their country neighbours (Bushwackers from Nanango) in a gripping final on Day 4.

It would not be Country Week without a certain Victorian, Al McGuiness of the Radford Clan making his annual pilgrimage to Marchant Park (but not before attending the at the MCG) and is viewed below carrying out his customary scoring role for his mates.

2012 Country Week Promotion

Warehouse Cricket recognizes that the heart of the Country Week Carnival lies in players from the country areas having the opportunity to play in Brisbane on the turf wickets at Marchant Park.

As such, in an endeavour to promote Country Week Cricket, I travelled to a number of towns in south-west Qld in June to ensure Country Officials that Country Week is as relevant today as it was in the early days. On the outward journey, it was fantastic to catch up with players from Warwick, Goondiwindi to St George and then up to Mitchell to Charleville. Coming home along the Warrego Highway, I was made welcome in Roma, Miles, Chinchilla, Dalby and Toowoomba where it became apparent that many thought that Country Week was somewhat “dead”. It was heartening to

The year ended 31 May 2012 has seen a successful year for both the Warehouse Cricket Association and the Warehouse Cricket Umpires Association. Team numbers in both Summer and Winter competitions have been similar to previous seasons. The coverage of fixtures games by badged umpires has continued to improve

with all Sunday games covered and only a couple of Saturday games without an umpire. Associate umpires who make themselves available for the Winter season has enabled this situation to occur.

Again this year, many Saturday and Sunday games in Summer have been washed out as well as the early games scheduled for the Winter competition. Rain clouds often seem to gather later in the week, thus preventing weekend fixtures going ahead. South East Queensland is surely due for a drier season in 2012/2013.

Player conduct appears to have improved this year with few reports initiated by umpires. It is pleasing to see our game being played in the right spirit by captains and their players.

Again, my thanks go to the hard working members of my executive and also to the members of the Warehouse Executive Committee for their support for the Umpires Association during the year.

If any players are retiring from cricket in the near future, our association is always seeking new members. For further information please contact our Secretary , Neil Simpson. JOE LAMBERT

On 3 May 2012 saw the passing of Joe Lambert who retired from our Association in 2007. Joe was a real character, a gentleman and he really loved the game of cricket. Joe was aged 87 years and just two days short of his 88th birthday. The following dot points are a record of Joe’s career as an umpire:

 Joined Queensland Cricket Umpires Association in 1964  Joined Warehouse Cricket Umpires Association in 1971 after a couple of seasons umpiring winter cricket  Granted life membership of the Warehouse Cricket Umpires Association in 1987  Granted life membership of the Warehouse Cricket Association in 1992  Employed as groundsman at Kianawah Park from 1978 to 1995  Past President of the Warehouse Cricket Umpires Association and also served as Vice President, Executive member, Examination Board member and Disputes Committee member  Umpires representative on the Warehouse Cricket Association’s Executive Committee  Umpired many matches for the Wanderers Cricket Club

PAGE 16 This Annual Report printed with the support of Konica Minolta Qld PAGE 17 This Annual Report printed with the support of Konica Minolta Qld Someone reading the history of Warehouse Cricket over the past 91 years would quickly conclude that where “opportunity knocks”, the Executive Committee of Warehouse Cricket was there to accept the challenge. For our players to have such centrally placed multi- playing complexes as Marchant Park (est. 1929), Kianawah Park (est. 1931) and 7th Brigade Park (est.1999) with 23 ovals, was no accident. The Executive Committee of the early years provided our Association with a solid foundation of facilities, with successive generations seeking to improve those facilities and range of competitions.

Competitions Development: Despite the challenges of recovering from almost two years of above average interruptions due to weather, our general numbers have held, although with some realignment to alternate competitions.

 Summer Saturday team numbers decreased by 10 teams  Sunday 50/50 Over team numbers remain static  New Summer 20/20 competition doubled to 16 teams and expanded into the 2nd half of the season.  Winter Saturday Juniors expanded to 37 teams (up 3)  Winter Saturday Teams dropped by 6 teams  Winter Sunday Teams expanded to 136 teams (up 8)

2011-2012 Junior Teams: If our goal is to retain junior Team Participation players in the game, then the positive feedback from Junior players, coaches along with parents is Winter 2011 a strong indication that these young players are Saturday Junior teams 36 enjoying their cricket and preparing for the Senior teams 70 summer season ahead. Sunday Senior teams 136 Club Development: There is no doubt that our Total 242 major clubs are experiencing a drain of available and effective volunteers which makes it difficult to Summer 2011–2012 run a large club. For most clubs, there has been a Saturday Senior teams 50 decline in club numbers and this is a challenge for Sunday Senior 50/50 50 each of them as is the challenge of seeking funds Senior T20 16 for facilities. Over the course of the season I have worked with clubs with grant applications and will Total 116 be available to give advice and assist clubs in promoting their facilities or in seeking grants. 18 Opportunities: On the other side of the coin, the ability to put together a group of your mates and enter a team either for a season or a period of time is one of the strengths of Warehouse Cricket, as is its diversity. Warehouse Cricket offers the opportunity and welcomes players from all sectors of our society. The fact that a significant number of current Warehouse players were not born in this country is testament to the enthusiasm of these players and the opportunities offered by Warehouse Cricket in an expanding range of formats for cricket.

(left, David Boon congratulates Kulwinder Singh at Trophy Night)

7th Brigade Park Canteen: When in 2000, competitions commenced at 7th Brigade Park, our long serving Canteen operators from Marchant Park, Len and Doreen Webster, accepted a request from the Executive Committee to operate the new canteen despite only having two grounds. In strict economic terms, the canteen operated at a loss, especially when teams brought along their own catering and the constant weather interruptions occurred. The exceptional service provided to cricketers by Len and Doreen (in addition to their other major role at Marchant Park) for 10 years became even more stark when having made the decision to leave 7th Brigade Park, no replacement could be found from any team or individual despite being advertising for almost 6 months.

It is said that often the best solutions are staring one in the face and this was the case with KALP taking over the operation of the canteen in March this year. KALP (Kingfisher Adult Learning Programs) are a non-profit group providing opportunities for those with a disability and now operate the 7th Brigade Park for the benefit of their members whilst providing a range of benefits for Warehouse Cricket and our players. KALP, Business Services Manager, Louise Klein advised that “KALP is very thankful for the opportunity of being able to run the canteen at 7th Brigade Park with funds raised each weekend going towards various activities and equipment for the organization. The canteen is run by many volunteers and it is great to see the cricketers, umpires and spectators supporting us.”

This arrangement is a “win win” for both organizations and Warehouse Cricketers. 19 Sponsorship Special thanks go to
