There were a record number of submissions received for this edition (1,272), albeit only 387 were accepted for publication. Our membership has risen to over 400 people now and is still going strong each and every day. Please keep passing the word to your peers and friends, as we plan to soon become the largest international and most cohesive poetry society of its kind in the world. When choosing work for publication, as principal editor of cattails, I look for Japanese style short forms that have been composed firstly and quietly considerate of sophisticated literary works that reflect the natural world through poetic beauty of thought. -

(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

Korean Dance and Pansori in D.C.: Interactions with Others, the Body, and Collective Memory at a Korean Performing Arts Studio
ABSTRACT Title of Document: KOREAN DANCE AND PANSORI IN D.C.: INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS, THE BODY, AND COLLECTIVE MEMORY AT A KOREAN PERFORMING ARTS STUDIO Lauren Rebecca Ash-Morgan, M.A., 2009 Directed By: Professor Robert C. Provine School of Music This thesis is the result of seventeen months’ field work as a dance and pansori student at the Washington Korean Dance Company studio. It examines the studio experience, focusing on three levels of interaction. First, I describe participants’ interactions with each other, which create a strong studio community and a women’s “Korean space” at the intersection of culturally hybrid lives. Second, I examine interactions with the physical challenges presented by these arts and explain the satisfaction that these challenges can generate using Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of “optimal experience” or “flow.” Third, I examine interactions with discourse on the meanings and histories of these arts. I suggest that participants can find deeper significance in performing these arts as a result of this discourse, forming intellectual and emotional bonds to imagined people of the past and present. Finally, I explain how all these levels of interaction can foster in the participant an increasingly rich and complex identity. The latter does not only mirror Korean norms, but also determines and reinforces current ethical trends. Amongst others, survival audition programs have gained much popularity in recent years This study argues that the neoliberal values embedded in these programs are impacting on the moral formation of viewers, and thereby facilitating the ethical deficiency of Korean society. To understand this phenomenon further, this study examined the specific values of Korean television entertainment, and took cognizance of why and how these programs should be critiqued. This analysis was done from three different perspectives: A socio-historical perspective, a media theoretical perspective, and an ethical-theological perspective. The former tracked the origin of neoliberalism in Korean society and how it has evolved over time. -
Playing Janggu (Korean Drum)
2011 EPIK Episode 1 Playing Janggu (Korean drum) Written by: Jennifer Arzadon Cheongju Technical High School The most impressive moment that has happened to me at my school would have to be when I accidentally joined the samul nori teacher’s group. I was invited to be a spectator at a samul nori practice session during lunchtime. The moment I entered their practice room, a janggu was placed in front of me and I was shown how to beat the drum-like instrument. Samul nori is the Korean traditional percussion music. The word samul means "four objects" and nori means "play" which is performed with four traditional Korean musical instruments: kkwaenggwari (a small gong), jing (a larger gong), janggu (an hourglass-shaped drum), and buk (a barrel drum similar to the bass drum). The traditional Korean instruments are called pungmul. Every Monday during lunchtime is our regular practices. Our leader kindly gave me my own gungchae and yeolchae so I can practice playing janggu on my own. One month later, we were told that the samul nori team was to perform for the official opening of the school’s new building. The week before the performance, we met and practiced every day during lunch along with the students who were going to perform with us. The day finally came for our first performance and I was pretty nervous. We got dressed in the traditional samul nori outfits and practiced one last time before heading out. The performance went great. We performed in front and all around the building to bless, to ensure good fortune and of course to celebrate. -

As the pandemic is approaching rock bottom,from vaccine, warm weather and rising natural immunity, I'll leave that subject for now. Something more interesting is brewing. The Swedish parliament (called the Riksdag) June 21st voted for no confidence in Prime Minister Stefan Lövfen, of the Social Democrats. (They are a sort of Socialists Light...or Dark or something) It's the first time in "modern times" a sitting government has been kicked in the ass this way. (Not counting 1990 when the then S government proclaimed an economic package as a "cabinet question", ie a proposition so important that the government would resign if it wasn't voted through. It fell, the government resigned...but came back a couple of weeks later!) The reason the Löfven government was kicked out is that their "passive support" from the Left Party (formerly the Communists) was withdrawn. And with that, there was enough support from the parties to the centre-right to oust Löfven - despite that they're not generally too fond of former Communists. The reason the Left Party left (no pun intended) Löfven is that the government to get support from two centre parties was to suggest investigating "market rents" for new housing (but not old). -

This anti-LGBT mobilization has been attributed to the need to create an “external enemy” as a means for covering up internal scandals. This study examines how the Protestant anti-LGBT movement creates an “internal enemy”, too, by fighting against pro-LGBT activism and attitudes within its faith. Applying the contentious politics and movement- countermovement frameworks to the study of religious conflict, the article uncovers the mechanisms at work in the complex interactions among anti-LGBT, moderate, and LGBT-affirmative actors. The analysis of five cases – heresy trials against a pro- LGBT pastor, conflicts at Christian universities, vilifications of a progressive Christian online newspaper and a church association, and the controversy around a moderate junior pastor – shows that perceived and deliberately created threats play a productive, opportunity-like role in religious contention over LGBT issues. Longstanding religiopolitical cleavages come to the fore, too, involving conflictual relations with state actors external to Korean Protestantism. This magazine was the dominant pop-music magazine during the 70s, and defined itself as a nexus for the so-called ”progressive movement” in Sweden. By applying the cultural theories of Raymond Williams to articles in this magazine, this essay aims to discover how the magazine motivated its cultural and political position. I examine what mechanisms and rhetoric the progressive movement used to distance itself from its proposed counterpart: commercial music and culture. During the 1970’s, hegemonic culture worked for the dominance of commercial culture, regulating and controlling the market for music and other types of culture. The progressive movement meant to take a stand against this, arguing for a culture free from economical and societal pressures, and the movement tried to find different ways of achieving this. Intertwined with the question of commercialism were the confrontation between capitalism and socialism, and thus many articles in Musikens Makt focused heavily on a socialist revolution as a method of crushing commercialism. -
