E IT ENACTED by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice B and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:— 1 Amendments to the Immigration Rules (1) The Immigration Rules, as laid before Parliament under section 3(2) of the Immigration Act 1971, are amended as follows. (2) In paragraphs 360 and 360C (right to request permission to take up employment) for “one year” substitute “six months”. 5 (3) Omit paragraphs 360A and 360D (which place restrictions on the employment that may be taken up). (4) After paragraph 360E insert— “360F In paragraphs 360 to 360E, the terms “asylum applicant” and “individual” mean— 10 (a) a principal applicant, or (b) an adult dependant of a principal applicant in accordance with paragraph 349.” 2 Extent, commencement and short title (1) This Act extends to England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. 15 (2) This Act comes into force at the end of the period of two months beginning with the day on which it is passed. The current rules condemn child refugees, fleeing conflict and persecution, to live in the UK without their parents. It also prevents parents from bringing their children over the age of 18. At a time when refugees need their families the most, they are being forced to be without them indefinitely. They say a week is a long time in politics, but a year is a long time to wait. For refugee families it means a year of missed birthdays, Christmases, Mother’s Days, Father’s Day and Eids. We cannot let the urgent crowd out the important. We urge you to use your power to stop the delays on this Bill and allow it the necessary time to proceed and be debated. With your help we can bring families together. LEADER’S REPORT • • • LEADER’S REPORT For the period covering: 20 June – 10 September 2018 GLENCAIRN SHELTERED HOUSING UNIT, 21 June On 21 June, I was delighted to be asked to attend the official opening of Glencairn Sheltered Housing Unit at Bill Smith Court in Stevenston. This modern, state-of-the-art facility provides 28 affordable, high-quality sheltered homes for the elderly. The £5.3 million Glencairn House development also incorporates the Council’s first district heating network, shared with the adjacent Glencairn Primary School, which will help to reduce the cost of heating for our residents and address the issue of fuel poverty. This fantastic initiative will reduce our own carbon footprint by using a sustainable energy source and it is hoped that by 2030, North Ayrshire will have reduced its carbon emissions by 40%. Two further district heating systems are also being proposed for new build Council housing developments in Dalry and in Largs, comprising 169 properties in total. These schemes are scheduled for completion in 2019/20 and 2020/21 respectively.
