  • GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.

About a year and a half lat- er, we started working on what would eventually become our biggest release, Twin Cities Funk & Soul: Lost R&B Grooves From Minneapolis/St. Paul 1964-1979. What follows is our attempt to share with you some of the amazing stories, history, and photos that have been so gracious- ly shared with us during the course of producing a compilation of soulful tunes from our hometown. ..... R&B, soul, and funk music in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota went through dra- matic changes during the 1960s and 1970s. Predating these changes, a vibrant jazz scene beginning in the 1920s laid the groundwork with several players being instrumental in helping teach young local R&B mu- sicians how to play. However, many of the early R&B pioneers, including Mojo Buford, Maurice McKin- nies, and Willie Walker, came to Minnesota from other states and brought the music with them.

  • Hawaiian Recordings in the Slack Key Tunings
Dancing Cat Records Hawaiian Slack Key Information Booklet, SECTION V: HAWAIIAN RECORDINGS IN THE SLACK KEY TUNINGS This section includes a list of the most important (usually) available recordings by Hawaiian Slack Key guitarists in each of the 50 tunings in the CHART OF RECORDED TUNINGS- SECTION IVa, that have had songs recorded in them (the other 12 tunings in the chart that are closely related to another tuning in the chart, bur have not had any songs recorded in them are also listed here, for continuity). The following information is listed for each tuning (the number of the tuning coincides to its number in the tuning chart on page 34). Here are some particulars about this section: 1. Artists which have recorded a particular tuning are listed alphabetically under that tuning. 2. The titles of the recordings are in all capital letters; the record label and number, indication of whether the title is out-of-print (no longer commercially available) and information on whether the Slack Key artist listed is backing up somebody else are also indicated. If the song has another title, we will indicate this within parentheses. 3. Song titles are in italics and are separated by a semi-colon. Medleys have slashes between their component songs. 4. There may be discrepancies in the spellings of some of the song titles. For reference purposes, the titles in this booklet are spelled as printed on the recordings unless there had been an obvious typographic error on the album notes. 5. If a song is played in a key other than the key of the tuning or if the guitar is tuned noticeably higher or lower than the normal pitch the tuning is in, or if the guitar is capoed to a higher pitch, this will be indicated after the song or songs.
