  • 1957 and 1961, Both My Life and Career
1957 and 1961, both my life and career began to take shape under the tutelage of legendary Billboard music editor Paul Ackerman and then-chart editor Tom Noonan, who first opened the magazine’s doors to a fifteen-year-old kid. At that time, Billboard was certainly the com munications center of the music industry, and what I learned and saw and heard there has indeed served me well over the years. Far and away the monumental event - and one of the most important moments in my life - was meeting Syd Nathan at a Billboard record-review session one drizzly Wednesday night in March or April 1958. A lthough i had a french test coming up, Paul urged me to stay by saying, “This guy is one of the great indie record men a real character. He can’t see very well and wears these thick, will be around. We’ll listen to those next week. Syd, let’s have Coca-Cola-bottle glasses, has a big ring on his finger and talks your records.” Syd got up and threw his records - fortunately, with a deep, raspy voice due to previous illnesses, but you just unbreakable 45s - on the floor and said, “Y)u don’t step on a man must meet him. He’ll be overwhelmed by your knowledge of when he’s down. Listen to Jerry Blaine’s records, and you can save C&W and R&B, and you will understand and love him and see mine for next week.” Needless to say, a ll the records were what he is all about.” Paul was right: That meeting changed my reviewed, including ones by Little Willie John on Syd’s label King life and destiny and is probably the reason I am able to write a and the Cadillacs on Josie.

  • GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.

About a year and a half lat- er, we started working on what would eventually become our biggest release, Twin Cities Funk & Soul: Lost R&B Grooves From Minneapolis/St. Paul 1964-1979. What follows is our attempt to share with you some of the amazing stories, history, and photos that have been so gracious- ly shared with us during the course of producing a compilation of soulful tunes from our hometown. ..... R&B, soul, and funk music in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota went through dra- matic changes during the 1960s and 1970s. Predating these changes, a vibrant jazz scene beginning in the 1920s laid the groundwork with several players being instrumental in helping teach young local R&B mu- sicians how to play. However, many of the early R&B pioneers, including Mojo Buford, Maurice McKin- nies, and Willie Walker, came to Minnesota from other states and brought the music with them.

  • 12X5 / the Rolling Stones (No. 2)
12x5 and Rolling Stones No. 2 ALO Andrew Loog Oldham probably does not get the credit he deserves for forming the early and lasting image of the Stones as the bad boys of rock and roll. One of his primary vehicles for doing this was through the early album art produced for Rolling Stones albums. He invited controversy with his liner notes and he legitimized the Stones role in the Swinging London scene by having a well-established artist like David Bailey photograph the Stones for the second US and second UK releases. Oldham’s album covers set the Stones on the course of courting controversy over the years. In the early days it was his intentional design. It began with the record company and Oldham’s controversial insistence on leaving their first album nameless. It continued on their second UK release with Oldham’s screed on the back of the album. Every record tells a story and the album cover is an integral part of that story. That started in earnest with Rolling Stones No. 2. Putting a Stones album out was already complicated. And It Was About To Get More Complicated Things were getting complicated with Rolling Stones album releases on opposite sides of the Atlantic. In the UK the Stones first album was followed by the extended play (EP) 5X5, released August 14, 1964. The title was an obvious and unimaginative play on words, five tracks played by five band members. Notice no title or band name on the front of the cover. Oldham said, “5x5 was culled from the London, the US branch of Decca said EPs were not Chess sessions.
