2 A MESSAGE FROM MR. KITACK LIM SECRETARY-GENERAL OF IMO

It is my pleasure to congratulate the class of 2016 on their graduation from this fine institution. IMO is honoured to be affiliated with IMLI and proud of the Institute’s impressive record of producing graduates of great distinction year upon year.

Shipping, continuously, quietly and efficiently, keeps the world’s people fed, clothed, housed and entertained. It is truly indispensable to the world. But the worldwide fleet and workforce need global standards. The International Maritime Organization, as the United Nations agency responsible for safe, secure, clean and efficient shipping, has developed and maintains these standards.

But, to be effective, these international standards need to be enshrined in law at the national level. And, by providing a regular flow of highly trained legal professionals, IMLI has been instrumental in doing this, helping to establish the solid legal foundations needed for the maritime sector to thrive.

We are sure that this class will be no exception. Like many IMLI graduates, they may one day find themselves in positions of great responsibility throughout the maritime world. Indeed, we see many members of the IMLI alumni at IMO meetings, where they represent their countries with great skill and assiduousness. Others, we are lucky enough to count as our colleagues in the Secretariat.

Whether in commercial industry, international organizations, institutions or at IMO, an IMLI graduate’s path to success is a well-worn one. We owe our gratitude to an Institute – complete with all of its staff and many supporters and donors – that, for nearly three decades, has been one of the cornerstones of IMO’s mission to enhance and build global capacity within the maritime sector.

Today is a time for celebration and contemplation, of reflecting and looking onward to how this successful period will help to foster new opportunities for the future. I wish all the graduates every success in their future endeavours, and I very much look forward to meeting many of them in a Mr. Kitack Lim professional capacity in the coming years. Secretary-General, IMO
