History of the Sampson County Courthouse The courthouse was originally built on a five-acre tract of land purchased from Richard Clinton, the founder of the City of Clinton. The first courthouse is believed to have been built in the fall of 1784. The construction of the original building was made of heavy hewn logs, weather boarded on the outside and paneled on the inside. The jailhouse was attached to the structure. A deep well was dug on the property and a watering trough was provided for the horses to drink water from. At this particular time, most travel was done on foot or on horseback.
Register stated, “I received a call from one of the school principals regarding concerns from the faculty at the Intermediate School that the school would be closing after this year. While that may have been an option at some point in the past, it has not been considered as a possibility at the present time.”
Register told the audience that the school board would be discussing the feasibility of moving the 3rd grade from Union Elementary to Union Intermediate School. This would make Union Elementary a Kindergarten through 2nd grade school and Union Intermediate a 3rd through 5th grade school.
Continuing Register noted, “We are concerned that the size of the school population hinders the efficiency from an economic standpoint such as heating & cooling empty classrooms, heating & cooling & maintaining mobile units at the elementary school, The brick courthouse built in 1902 at a cost of $30,000 etc. The small staff also makes it difficult to operate as effectively as would be possible with more staff members in the building. We also gave consideration to the core infrastructure at UIS, cafeteria, gym, library, bathrooms, etc. and are assured these areas are adequate as well.”
“Now that the facilities question is answered in the affirmative, I have requested that the entire board discuss our options. We will begin this process at the April board work session. “So,” explains Howerton, “a typical hospital functions on it’s commercial insurance. For us in Sampson County that’s about 24 or 25% of our patients. So, one on five is commercially insured which means we stay in business by that commercial insurance. When that’s eroded by someone coming in and taking the better paying insured patients and leaving all the patients they don’t make a profit on that really impacts our ability to care for the community and meet our mission.”
Simmons next suggests that expanded technology in medicine today could cost as much as what we used to pay for buildings. He asks how the hospital balances those needs when surviving primarily on Medicaid and Medicare.
Howerton states, “That is true. And I will also say physicians go into medicine to help people. “Getting your ring in your freshman year is something that I will never forget,” Moore admitted. “But it also makes you work harder to get back there. This season we got really close … but it is the same feeling – you want to keep working hard to get back. I know I am going to be fired up going into my senior year because I know I want to finish strong.”
To make her point, Moore reminds me of the close relationships that her and her teammates have – on and off the court.

This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test.
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudo- ku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, col- umn and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can fig- ure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! Week of JulyMarch 7-13, 29-April 2017 4, 2019 www.thesampsonweekly.com 13 BUSINESSCRIME Arrests tion. No Bond.
