Life: The Excitement of Biology 4(4) 272 Geometric Morphometrics Sexual Dimorphism in Three Forensically- Important Species of Blow Fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae)1 José Antonio Nuñez-Rodríguez2 and Jonathan Liria3 Abstract: Forensic entomologists use adult and immature (larvae) insect specimens for estimating the minimum postmortem interval. Traditionally, this insect identification uses external morphology and/or molecular techniques. Additional tools like Geometric Morphometrics (GM) based on wing shape, could be used as a complement for traditional taxonomic species recognition. Recently, evolutionary studies have been focused on the phenotypic quantification for Sexual Shape Dimorphism (SShD). However, in forensically important species of blow flies, sexual variation studies are scarce. For this reason, GM was used to describe wing sexual dimorphism (size and shape) in three Calliphoridae species. Significant differences in wing size between females and males were found; the wing females were larger than those of males. The SShD variation occurs at the intersection between the radius R1 and wing margin, the intersection between the radius R2+3 and wing margin, the intersection between anal vein and CuA1, the intersection between media and radial-medial, and the intersection between the radius R4+5 and transversal radio-medial. Our study represents a contribution for SShD description in three blowfly species of forensic importance, and the morphometrics results corroborate the relevance for taxonomic purposes. We also suggest future investigations that correlated shape and size in sexual dimorphism with environmental factors such as substrate type, and laboratory/sylvatic populations, among others. Toleration of Lucilia cuprina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Eggs to Agitation Within Insect Saline Christina Kaye Alvarez and Dr. Adrienne Brundage Editor: Colton Cooper Abstract: Microorganisms have an ability to attach themselves to surfaces, where they then multiply and form a protective biofilm, which protects the microorganisms from outside influences, including chemicals for sanitation. This makes the cleaning of fly eggs for maggot therapy difficult. The purpose of this study was to test the toleration of Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) eggs for agitation, which is used to degrade biofilms. Lucilia cuprina eggs were washed with insect saline and treated by undergoing five minutes of agitation. It was found that there was a significant difference between the control group, which did not undergo any agitation, and the treatment group, which did. This knowledge is useful for further testing of the extent to which agitation impacts survivability of the eggs and the debridement of the biofilm. To evaluate climatic, geographical and environmental influences on the selection of carrion-breeding fauna in Northern Italy and consequently on inferred forensic data (post-mortem intervals and post-mortem transfer), we present details of six indoor–outdoor cases. Results show that the most abundant species was Lucilia sericata, together with other fly species of entomo-forensic interest, belonging to the Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae families. In particular, for the first time in Italy, we report finding Phormia regina, Lucilia ampullacea, Lucilia caesar and Sarcophaga (Pandelleana) protuberans on fresh cadavers. The active period of L. sericata in Northern Italy, according to previous findings in Southern Europe, revealing clearcut differences with phenologies in Northern Europe, has important consequences in estimating the period (season, months) of death in cases of long post-mortem intervals (several months or years) if empty puparia of this fly are found. -

Pub- lished morphological characters used to identify L. sericata and L. cuprina were reviewed, and then scored and tested using specimens of both species and known hybrids. Ordination by multi-dimensional scaling indicated that the species were separable, and that hybrids resembled L. cuprina, whatever their origin. Discriminant function analysis of the characters successfully separated the specimens into three unam- biguous groups – L. sericata, L. cuprina and hybrids. The hybrids were morphologically similar irrespective of whether they were from an ancient introgressed lineage or more modern. -

Okiwelu* Entomology and Pest Management Unit, Department of Animal and Environmental Biology, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Investigations were conducted in the rainy season August-October, 2011, to identify the arthropods associated with carcasses of the Greater Cane Rat, Thryonomys swinderianus; two-spotted Palm Civet, Nandina binotata, Mona monkey, Cercopithecus mona and Maxwell’s duiker, Philantomba maxwelli in lowland rainforest, Nigeria. Collections were made from carcasses in sheltered environment and open vegetation. Carcasses were purchased in pairs at the Omagwa bushmeat market as soon as they were brought in by hunters. They were transported to the Animal House, University of Port Harcourt. Carcasses of each species were placed in cages in sheltered location and open vegetation. Flying insects were collected with hand nets, while crawling insects were trapped in water. Necrophages, predators and transients were collected. Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2016) 12:47 DOI 10.1186/s13002-016-0118-7 RESEARCH Open Access Folk knowledge of invertebrates in Central Europe - folk taxonomy, nomenclature, medicinal and other uses, folklore, and nature conservation Viktor Ulicsni1* , Ingvar Svanberg2 and Zsolt Molnár3 Abstract Background: There is scarce information about European folk knowledge of wild invertebrate fauna. We have documented such folk knowledge in three regions, in Romania, Slovakia and Croatia. We provide a list of folk taxa, and discuss folk biological classification and nomenclature, salient features, uses, related proverbs and sayings, and conservation. Methods: We collected data among Hungarian-speaking people practising small-scale, traditional agriculture. We studied “all” invertebrate species (species groups) potentially occurring in the vicinity of the settlements. We used photos, held semi-structured interviews, and conducted picture sorting. Results: We documented 208 invertebrate folk taxa. Many species were known which have, to our knowledge, no economic significance. 36 % of the species were known to at least half of the informants. Knowledge reliability was high, although informants were sometimes prone to exaggeration. 93 % of folk taxa had their own individual names, and 90 % of the taxa were embedded in the folk taxonomy. Twenty four species were of direct use to humans (4 medicinal, 5 consumed, 11 as bait, 2 as playthings). Completely new was the discovery that the honey stomachs of black-coloured carpenter bees (Xylocopa violacea, X. valga)were consumed. 30 taxa were associated with a proverb or used for weather forecasting, or predicting harvests. Conscious ideas about conserving invertebrates only occurred with a few taxa, but informants would generally refrain from harming firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus), field crickets (Gryllus campestris) and most butterflies. -

Fannidae), dung flies (F. Scathophagidae) and root maggot flies (F. Anthomyiidae). It is comprised of approximately 7000 described species. The monophyly of the Muscoidea and the precise relationships of muscoids to the closest superfamily the Oestroidea (blow flies, flesh flies etc)e ar both unresolved. Until now mitochondrial (mt) genomes were available for only two of the four muscoid families precluding a thorough test of phylogenetic relationships using this data source. -

These flies can be harmful to animal health and cause annoyance and discomfort. All filth flies have an egg, larva (maggot), pupa, and adult stage in their life cycle. The adult fly has 2 developed wings (the hind pair is reduced to a knobbed balancing organ). Filth flies are usually scavengers in nature and many are capable of transmitting diseases to man. Filth flies can usu- ally be grouped according to their habits and appearance as house flies and their relatives; flesh flies, blow flies and bottle flies, filter flies, soldier flies, and vinegar (fruit) flies. Key to the adults of the most common forensic species of Diptera in South America. Flies (Diptera, blow flies, house flies, flesh flies, horse flies, cattle flies, deer flies, midges and mosquitoes) are among the four megadiverse insect orders. Several species quickly colonize human cadavers and are potentially useful in forensic studies. One of the major problems with carrion fly identification is the lack of taxonomists or available keys that can identify even the most common species sometimes resulting in erroneous identification. Here we present a key to the adults of 12 families of Diptera whose species are found on carrion, including human corpses. Also, a summary for the most common families of forensic importance in South America, along with a key to the most common species of Calliphoridae, Muscidae, and Fanniidae and to the genera of Sarcophagidae are provided. Diversas espécies desta ordem podem rapidamente colonizar cadáveres humanos e são de utilidade potencial para estudos de entomologia forense.
